Swansea boss has spoken ahead of Newcastle United match

Carlos Carvalhal has been speaking ahead of Saturday’s match at St James Park.

He describes the game against Newcastle as a ‘very important’ match.

A win could potentially take Swansea to within one point of safety but defeat would see them fall nine points behind Newcastle, as well as up to six points adrift of fourth bottom.

Carlos Carvalhal says that ‘Newcastle are a good side with good organisation, a good coach and good fans’, with Rafa picking up seven points from nine in three relegation clashes over the festive period.

It will be Friday before we get the pre-match press conference with Rafa Benitez and as well as the game, no doubt the United boss will be quizzed on what is, or isn’t…, happening in the transfer market.

However, the newly appointed Swansea boss makes clear that he has been promised money to buy players in January and that he is under no pressure to sell anybody.

With the likes of Swansea and other clubs at the bottom set to spend in trying to ensure safety, will Mike Ashley allow Rafa Benitez to bring in anybody?

Carlos Carvalhal beat Newcastle twice last season when at Sheffield Wednesday, hopefully Rafa will have his measure this time.

Carlos Carvalhal:

“It (Saturday’s match) is very important.

“Newcastle are a good side with good organisation, a good coach and good fans.

“We will do our best and you can be sure we will fight for the three points.

“We’re not sure about Renato Sanches and Tammy Abraham (being available for Newcastle), we will have to see how they are tomorrow.

“Ki and Leon are both training as normal and are both progressing. Angel is still out.

“The boat is on the sea and the bait is on the hook (for incoming transfers).

“I am not on the boat, I am on the beach watching. They are players I want; they have to be the players a manager wants.

“We have some gaps in the team and also we must improve the team.

“When I came here, it was clear that we would bring in players to try to improve the team and we would not sell out best players.

“If someone comes in and offers £50m or £100m you can never say never, it is like Neymar or Philippe Coutinho.

“But the fundamental idea is not to sell any players.”
