Sky Sports have released stats that show just how far Gini Wijnaldum is ahead of the competition in one peculiar stat, during his Premier League career with Newcastle United and Liverpool.

After two and a half years in the English top tier, the Dutch international has scored 18 Premier League goals.

However, there is still not a single one of those that has been scored away from home.

To put it into context, Sky Sports have gone through the records and these were/are the three nearest challengers, in terms of scoring PL goals but none of them being away from home:

18 Gini Wijnaldum

9 Clive Wilson

8 Ronny Johnsen

8 Jeff Kenna

So Gini Wijnaldum has scored an excellent 18 goals in 47 PL home games but is goalless in 47 away matches.

As Sky Sports point out, it is natural that both Newcastle and Liverpool have been generally more dominant at home but the assist statistics are a little bizarre. They show that eight of his assists have come at home but seven assists away, next to no difference.

Interesting to see another Newcastle United former player in that list above, though no doubt a fair few of you will be wondering who. He actually only played three games and scored no goals for NUFC, a 34 Ronny Johnsen just one of many Graeme Souness classic signings when at Newcastle United, though to be fair, not one of his more expensive blunders (Owen, Luque, Boumsong..).

As for Gini Wijnaldum, even though he is clearly doing well at Newcastle, interesting to see that his stats were better at a relegated Newcastle…

In 38 Premier League matches for Newcastle, Wijnaldum got 11 goals and 5 assists.

In 56 Premier League matches for Liverpool, Wijnaldum has 7 goals and 10 assists.

Involved in a goal every one in 2.4 games for Newcastle and one every 3.3 games for Liverpool.

He is used in a slightly more defensive role for the scousers due to their wealth of attacking talent but in a more dominant team and with better players around him, you would expect Wijnaldum’s stats to be better, especially on away goals…

  • Leazes.

Strange stats that you can attribute to Gini… bad traveller or an away role which is more defensive, or both.

But even more troubling….. is how many penalties have the opposition had since United last were given one?…. We are either the worst cheats in the entire football family or….. the referees are bias!

….is there any other options I may have missed?

Possibly we don’t get players running with the ball into the box enough?

Be interesting to see another ex ref Gallagher’s take on Sterling’s dive on Sky Sports this morning, not holding my breath though as he never gives us owt.

    • Mark Potter

That you are biased and can’t see that other teams have been fairly awarded penalties against us?

Another stonewaller on Saturday. And no chance of us getting a penalty if we spend about 1% of a game in the opposition box.

We’ve changed our whole outlook on corners just this week and we’ve had to change it once already this season because we’re just not getting enough success.
