This is the predicted Newcastle team v Luton for the FA Cup third round.

Rafa Benitez revealing at his press conference on Friday afternoon that Aleksandar Mitrovic (back) and Jesus Gamez (ankle) are both sidelined.

He also said that Chancel Mbemba has picked up a knee injury and will miss, Florian Lejeune (foot) is still out, whilst Joselu is also a doubt. No mention of Rob Elliot but he has missed the last two games and guessing he remains out.

The Newcastle boss also indicating that he was going to be putting out a stronger team than maybe fans were imagining, Rafa pointing out there is a full week before Swansea next Saturday:

“We play only one game this week, so we can try to put a team out that, for me, will be enough to win this game.

“We are playing against a good, well organised team with lots of confidence, so we cannot underestimate them.

“We have experience in the cups in England, and every game is difficult. You cannot go into any game with overconfidence.

“We will try to win this game and see if we can progress.

“We will have a strong team (against Luton) and I will try to play a strong team to make sure that we put everything in and try to win.”

It must be a knocking bet that Freddie Woodman gets a deserved senior start, whilst I think whatever Rafa says, he will be looking after his key players.

A bit unfortunate that the likes of fringe players such as Gamez, Mbemba, Lejeune and Mitrovic are unavailable, meaning the United boss will probably have to play the odd player he’d rather not.

I think Sterry and Haidara will be drafted in as full-backs, with Dummett moving inside to play centre-back, whilst due to Mbemba’s absence Ciaran Clark will probably have to play.

I think Aarons and Murphy look good bets for the wings, whilst Henri Saivet should get another game after not featuring since his goal at West Ham. Isaac Hayden might play alongside him after not featuring much recently.

Up front is tricky and no surprise if we see Perez stay up there with Diame in behind.

Not the strongest team but one that should take care of Luton.

The predicted Newcastle team v Luton:

Freddie Woodman

Jamie Sterry

Ciaran Clark

Paul Dummett

Massadio Haidara

Jacob Murphy

Henri Saivet

Isaac Hayden

Rolando Aarons

Mohamed Diame

Ayoze Perez

merino needs to build up match fitness so should have some involvement, any first team squad player who isn’t in the running to start the next game should play

  • Monkseaton Magpies

He better play or a strong team as lose against Luton and Swansea and it will be goodbye. We need to have a good cup run Shelvey and Ritchie and Merino must start full stop.

    • Kneebotherm8

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Woodman has to start. The kid hasn’t had much of a chance. Is Armstrong cup-tied to Bolton?

    • Damon Horner

Can’t be, they’re a Championship side so enter at the 3rd round also.

    • Rich Lawson

Love Woodman in the 1st team, dunno bout Arma’ but i’d like to see hm given a chance, even for just one half ? Geordie boy in the centre forward roll.

  • Wor Lass

I sincerely hope you`ve got that wrong, Ryan!

  • Paul Patterson

I’d go with that, with Joselu, Shelvey, Ritchie and Gayle on the bench. Let’s not pretend we are safe from relegation, we aren’t. Keep everyone back for Swansea. Plus, if that side isn’t good enough to beat Luton, LUTON!!!!, then they should never play Premier League football again. 3-0 to Toon.

  • Shields Mag

Should have enough to beat Luton, they have done well in their own league but think home advantage will count and am going 2-0, howay the lads!

  • Andy Mac

I have a feeling that Luton will be more than capable of beating a three legged donkey, a short R’sd Big Man and one of the founding Marvel Comics characters, “Mr Slower than a snail”

Of course I could be wrong ?

  • Mal

I’m nervous about this one. I should imagine all those travelling Luton fans have taken that 11/2 to help pay their expenses. To be honest I’ll be surprised if we win but obviously happy. HTL.

    • Paul Patterson

Even with the weakened sides predicted, we MUST be good enough to beat Luton . .

      • Mal

        Hope so

  • S.G.M.

If four of them start, ill eat my hat, and the stand its hanging on.
