This is the predicted Newcastle team v Burnley for tonight’s match.

A game where you have to fancy that whoever, if anybody, scores first, then they have an overwhelming chance of going on to take the three points.

The game at Turf Moor was similar, only a 74th minute Hendrick goal dividing the teams in a poor match. That game actually kicking off Newcastle’s dreadful run of one point from nine games.

I think Rafa Benitez has fancied playing with three/five at the back for some time and against Man City and Chelsea he went with that formation.

Those games saw the system used in a more negative way with the opposition expected to dominate possession but I think now, Rafa Benitez has at last got the players available to start and make it work in a more positive sense – getting the best from the players he has available.

In DeAndre Yedlin and loan signing Kenedy, Rafa has surely two players who are made to play the wing-back roles. Both with loads of pace and also the pair of them better going forward then defensively.

By playing the three centre-backs it allows Rafa to give him the extra attacking options. The return of Paul Dummett also helping to make this formation work.

He is a player who is far better suited to defending than going forward and has done well since his return, he can sit in at the back with Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles, to hopefully give a real solid defensive foundation.

Newcastle are set to make a number of loan moves in and out on deadline day and it has been revealed that Rob Elliot has a back problem, which has helped to finalise the decision to bring in Martin Dubravka from Sparta Prague, with Freddie Woodman set to be on the bench tonight before then completing a loan move to Aberdeen.

In a surprising twist, Mohamed Diame has arguably become Newcastle’s best central midfielder based on recent games, he was given a shift off at Chelsea and I expect him to return.

Mikel Merino has gradually been recovering from his back injury and must be close to being 100% fit now, with Shelvey not performing, the Spaniard is set to come in and try to get Newcastle going in the middle of the pitch.

Up front, I think Rafa Benitez could well give Joselu and Gayle another try together, with hopefully the wing-backs and home advantage helping the strikers to get more/better service.

Matt Ritchie was tried in a central role behind a lone striker at Chelsea, just as Christian Atsu was at Stoke.

It was tough going at Chelsea but if Rafa goes with the wing-backs I think Matt Ritchie will be the choice to play an inside role, especially with his workrate hopefully able to help win that middle of the pitch contest.

Burnley have won none of their last seven games and are set to be missing up to eight first team squad players through injury, this is surely a match where Newcastle have to press high from the start and with the likes of Kenedy, Yedlin, Ritchie, Gayle and Diame they can force Burnley into mistakes in their own half and get on top.

    • Peaky Magpie

Rest of the season in a nutshell there.

  • Paul Patterson

He won’t play 5-3-2 and at least three of those players won’t start/play where predicted.

    • Gareth Marshall

I’m not sure what some people are smoking these days to think that is the team that will start.

Besides, just look at it, if that were the actual formation then we would get ripped apart. There in no balance at all.

      • thewildchimp

I mean, I would like to see it just for the sake of it, but that’s way off. And not in this match, when survival is at stake.

  • S.G.M.

We get our first pen. this century, tonight. I smell it.

    • Paul Patterson

Let’s hope Ritchie is on then.
      Don’t give it to Joselu.

      • thewildchimp

Supposedly, Joss is good at pens. But seems to me he has no confidence, whatsoever.

  • John

Wait until he sees how’s many Chinese people are in Newcastle

  • mentalman

i may be wrong but hasn’t yedlin been dropped every time we’ve played with wing backs

  • hetonmag

    For me.
    Yedlin, Lascelles, Dummett, Kennedy,
    Murphy, Diame, Shelvey, Atsu,
    Perez, Joselu,

  • TheNutJob

A win tonight is a must & i think we`ll do it, hope Slimani is fit asap,

    • Peaky Magpie

Retire The Hoss at the end of the season……up and down Blackpool beach…if he’d been born earlier he’d have been doon the pits…

      • molend

Remember Jacky and Jimmy, the marrers? Jacky went by Jimmy’s to pick him up to gaan doon the pit. His wife answered the door. ‘Jimmy ready, pet lamb?’ ‘Eeh, Jacky an aaful thing’s happened. Aa sent wor Jimmy doon the back o’ the garden to pick iz a cabbage for wor dinner and he’s faallen doon deed’ ‘That’s terrible, hinny. What ye gana dee?’ ‘ Well, Aa’ll just hev to use a tin o’ peas’.
I bet Rafa feels the same way.

      • Rich Lawson

Blackpool beach,do they still have donkey rides then ?

    • TheFatController

He’ll play against Man Utd as it’s not a bad injury apparently. even if fit Rafa probably wouldn’t drop him right in without the full tactical briefing, judging from the way he works on game plans…

  • Peaky Magpie

    Can’t beat a good Brazilian 🤣😂

    • Damon Horner

      I think the ladies agree!

  • ghostrider

I can just picture kenedy flying down the wing about to put a ball in and someone taking him out from the grassy knoll.

    • Rich Lawson

To late ,Ashley’s built on it.

  • TheNutJob

Michael saw a kid in toon with Joselu Newcastle shirt on today
he said, hey kid did you find that in the bin ?
f##k off Mister, the kid said

    • Peaky Magpie

I heard someone had washed their Joselu shirt then hung it on the line to dry…..when they went to check later you never guess what ? …..some thieving ba***rd had stolen the pegs !!

      • TheNutJob

      • Taz

It’s usually the only time he gets between the pegs…

  • goggsy

Don’t expect Kennedy to start tonight. I think Rafa will go 442. Darlow, yedlin, Clark, lascelles, dummet, Murphy, merino, Diame, atsu, Perez,Joselu. Doubt anybody has ever picked the same team that Rafa picks though.

  • Paul Patterson

All eyes on the team sheet lads and lasses. Watch out for a high profile player dropping out.
    The window hasn’t closed yet..

    • Peaky Magpie

      Many a true word Paul,many a true word…

    • wheyayeman

Messi apparently has a slight knock! Howay the Lads!!!!

      • Paul Patterson

Is Shearer fit enough to start?

  • wheyayeman

You lot need to calm down! Surely you don’t actually think we are going to be as extravagant as to LITERALLY loan a player on deadline day whilst staring into the abyss of relegation no 3 do you? Do you think the Chairman is a Billionaire or something? It’s a premier league football club not an effing charity! You mental cases thinking we can just go out there waving money around looking to sign 1 solitary player, unwanted by his parent club for the next 4 months need to get real! The only incoming is more (insert expletive) about not being able to get (insert players name we were never lifting a finger to sign in the first place) over the line. Rafa’s feedback after this one will be fun to watch.

    • Paul Patterson

      Alright steady on..
