Islam Slimani is on the verge of completing his move to Newcastle United.

He is on Tyneside having his medical on Wednesday afternoon and the assumption must be he will be presented to the crowd at tonight’s Burnley match, if the move is completed in time.

It is now three and a half years ago when the Algerian international was first linked with a transfer to Newcastle (see below), that being the disastrous window when as well as bringing in Remy Cabella, Siem de Jong, Jack Colback and Facundo Ferreyra, the Graham Carr striker choice was Emmanuel Riviere to replace the goals Loic Remy had contributed on loan the previous season.

Two years later and Islam Slimani had scored another 39 league goals in 49 starts (plus five from the bench) for Sporting Lisbon, before being sold for around £27m to Leicester in summer 2016.

Despite only starting 15 Premier League matches (plus 20 appearances as a sub), Islam Slimani has eight Premier League goals plus another five for Leicester in the cup competitions.

The striker turns 30 in June so interesting  to see what the exact details will be of his loan move to Newcastle and whether any chance of a permanent deal.

Earlier today it was revealed that Slimani had picked up a thigh injury in training and was expected to be missing for at least two weeks, meaning he would miss the Palace game on Sunday and the Man Utd one a week later, as well as tonight’s Burnley game.

However, Craig Hope who covers Newcastle for The Mail has now said that he has been told the injury isn’t as serious as first reported and Islam Slimani has an outside chance of being available for Palace, though Man Utd is a more likely target.

With only 13 games left after tonight and Slimani not allowed to play in the Leicester away one, Rafa Benitez needs the striker up to pace as soon as possible, with some crucial matches coming up.

As Islam Slimani takes his Newcastle medical on Wednesday afternoon, news that his injury is not as bad as first reported.

The Mag – 25 June 2014:

The latest striker to be credited with a Newcastle interest is Islam Slimani.

After struggling elsewhere with various other forwards, it is now claimed that United have switched their attention to the 26 year old Sporting Lisbon forward, though there is believed to be competition from Stoke and West Ham.

Slimani is now valued at around £6m, though would represent a tidy profit for Sporting after they recruited the player a year ago on a free from Belouizdad, who compete in the domestic Algerian league.

Islam Slimani is over in Brazil with his national team and after coming on as a substitute in their opening 2-1 defeat against Belgium, he started against South Korea and earned a goal and an assist as they ran out impressive 4-2 winners. Russia await on Thursday and will decide whether Slimani and Algeria progress to the knockout stages.

His 8 goals in 26 appearances helped Sporting Lisbon into the Portuguese runners up spot, while back in Algeria he scored 32 in 96 for Belouizdad.

At international level his record looks more impressive, scoring 12 in 20 appearances, which includes 5 in 7 World Cup qualifying matches plus the goal against South Korea.

It was a big step moving up from domestic football in Algeria to the Portuguese league, but will be at least as big a leap if he does move on to England.

Another name for your list and at least Slimani kind of rhymes with ‘Toon Army’…

  • TheNutJob

lift the crowd the neet if he`s signed & paraded,
lets hope the Hoss doesn`t hoof him 1

    • mentalman

talk is they will parade the 3 of them before kick off

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Even I can’t be fooled into thinking Hoss is a new signing.

  • thewildchimp

Well, he’ll be playing in at least a quarter of this season’s league matches, so that’s alright. I’ll take what we get.

  • FatParosite

Not entirely sure it’s positive. Look what we got when we plumbed for Rafa’s last 3rd choice striker.

    • TheNutJob

this guys a major upgrade from the Hoss

      • csh

He’s an upgrade on all of our strikers

      • FatParosite

Don’t worry I’ll cheer him on. I want him to do well. He has something to prove. But I’ll believe the goals when I see em.

        • Mark Potter

You don’t know that he wasn’t first choice all along. The problem was that earlier in the window Leicester were indicating they preferred to sell rather than loan. If they were to recoup the money they paid to Lisbon (GBP 28 million), then he was out of our price range, unless we sold Mitro for a big amount. Leicester only just relented and allowed the loan.

  • Peter Stabler

Got to get behind the lad if he signs.

  • Tony Mann

If the Premier league champions – at the time – saw something in this lad, then he’s got to be worth a go.
He’s been kept out of a very good Leicester side by some exceptional players.

  • Stephen Paylor

A definite upgrade on what we have and is a solid deal if there was not too much in the way of a loan fee. If it gets us to stay up then we can have a real look in summer for the solution up front.

  • TheFatController

As Thierry Henry has said, no brainer for us and him. Powerful, pacey, big target man who can finish, is 29, knows the league, not going to be season weary on run in….

…put that up against Jorgensen arriving from Dutch league never having seen the PL up close.

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

It would be nice if there was a purchase option, I think he will do well. If only he was fit for Saturday.

      • Tony Mann

We have the opportunity to see how he does without mega expense.
Hope the lad does do well – we’re going to find out.

        • Kneebotherm8

They’re the type of deals Rafa stated he wanted before the season started…..why’s it taken so long for the penny to drop with Ashley?

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I think he will, on another forum, I was hoping we’d go for him as soon as he was warming the bench for Leicester in August.

          • Tony Mann

            Let’s wait until 23.00.
As always the drama / crisis unfolds.

          • Tony Mann

Done deal – A bit of drama with the Mitro issue clouding things.
Given your grasp of all things Toon financial – I’m a bit surprised you don’t know why your mate didn’t go for him in August.
We’ve got him now though !
If he keeps us up, that’s all that matters, and we’re all winners.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Wages over a full season busts ffp?

  • Andy Mac

“Slimani injured or ineligible for next three games, won’t be able to
play against Leicester. So will play a maximum of ten games. £2m loan
fee and and £1m in wages. £300k a game. This is what happens when you
ignore Rafa and think you know better” From Nick on Twitter.

I sincerely hope this isnt a “buy him at the end of the loan period” deal because a 30 year old striker aint worth £30m ?

PS Respect to Aarons for going abroad to get game time. Hope it works for him

  • Paul Patterson

Positivity all round if he signs, sadly it’s a damning indictment of the regime that it’s took four years to get the player we originally wanted.

          • Tony Mann

Anyway, the reference is to stuff that clings to your arris just as Clarko does with Mike’s immense posterior.

        He’s a gimp anyway..

  • robbersdog

A loan signing who’s injured, and will be available for the last eight or nine games of the season…is being presented to the crowd tonight?

Oh for the good old days when we used to sign the likes of Shearer, Ferdinand, Asprilla and Kluivert on a regular basis. And now we’re being thrown a few crumbs in the form of a Leicester reject who isn’t even an actual signing. Ashley really is the gift that keeps on giving.

  • Neil O

Slimanis minutes per goal is roughly a third of Gayles – if the comical is accurate. If he adds 3-4 more goals until the end of the season (than we would have had) that could make the difference to staying up. If 25 million was the asking price for Jorgensen – they really are pulling our leg. Couldn’t make it in Germany. So, to me Slimani is a much better option. Just hope Sturridge gets crocked again………

    • Wor Lass

I`m not knocked out about signing Slimani but I reckon he deserves a fair hearing. Gayle`s PL minutes per goal figure this season is 352 and Slimani`s is 239.

      • Peaky Magpie

Leicester fans seem to rate him but they’re just overloaded with strikers……Stoke however are stil pi**ing themselves we bought The Hoss…

        • Wor Lass

I reckon that was the only deal where the selling club insisted that he play against them! Actually, to be fair, he had a good game against them at home (other than missing about 5 good chances, that is).

        • Tony Mann

Well now we’ve seen him – you would p*ss yourself wouldn’t you.
I have never seen a ‘striker’ bereft of confidence as much as him – He just looks scared of where he is.

        • Kneebotherm8

Coulda been worse………were still pi**ing ourselves about spuds £30 million outlay on Sissoko…at least Stoke only duped us oota £5 million….

  • kingfisher

Call me Mr Negative, but I’m always wary of the reason why anyone would join the circus that is N.U.F.C if they had other options. Obviously it can’t be for the money with M.A controlling the purse strings. So why choose us over another club. We have to assume that we are the only club interested, and if that’s the case, why? 🤔🤔🤔

    • Tony Mann

Might be because he’s going to get a game.
I’m as cynical as anyone but sometimes, just sometimes, I believe players actually want to play.

      • kingfisher

        Yep Tony,I suppose that’s reason enough !

    • Wor Lass

Mr Negative! Well, you asked ..

    • Clarko

Not the case, he’s been linked with Besiktas, West Ham, Watford, Monaco, Stoke, Chelsea, Rennes, West Brom and Crystal Palace.

      • JonMag

        is that all

      • Wor Lass

List all the players that have been linked with us this season and say how many we`ve actually been interested in (i.e. actually enquired and wanted to sign).

        No, don`t really …

        • Peaky Magpie

You’ve opened the floodgates now there Wor Lass…..

        • Clarko

          Okay, I’ll rephrase my comment.

Not the case, Besiktas, West Ham, Watford, Monaco, Stoke, Chelsea, Rennes, West Brom and Crystal Palace have all been interested in signing him.

          • Wor Lass

Much clearer, thank you – but that wasn`t the question.

          • Clarko

            1) You didn’t ask a question.

            2) My response removed the need to counter your irrelevant comment.

          • Tony Mann

Actually, he did ask a question.

          • Clarko

            Nope.

          • Wor Lass

I quoted some Transfermarket stats in a comment below. Did you spot it?

          • Tony Mann

‘Nope’ – is that because you don’t go to Victoria’s Secret or you don’t wear knickers at all – You saucy minx.

          • Wor Lass

No, technically it was an instruction but – of course – everyone knows that the Great Clarko doesn`t take instructions from mere mortals.

          • Tony Mann

            Soz mate – I’ll retract it .
I cower in the glow of Clarko’s intellect and the vision of him in Victoria’s Secret wearing French knickers (see other post).

          • Wor Lass

            It was in my mind.

          • Wor Lass

If my comment was so irrelevant, why did you deign to answer it, Oh Great One? Oh, as it was a comment maybe I should have said, “respond to it”.

          • Clarko

            To highlight your stupidity.

          • Wor Lass

You`re slipping up in your dotage. Back in the day, it would have been beneath your dignity – you would have been happy to let me do that myself. Are you assimilating human traits?

        • FatParosite

Don’t ask Clarko to do that he has direct access to Bishop’s list of bull§hit buys he could reel them off all night.

          that`s true
          😤

  • Mirandinha9

Only the Toon would put their faith in someone who is injured and a keeper who is best described by European sport commentators as ‘shaky’. To top it off, we let more depart than what has come in, thus, further lessening an existing threadbare squad. Heard Adrian Durham stating that the uncertainty surrounding Rafa’s long term commitment, was a pivotal factor in why 2 strikers did not come to the club. Well any ambivalence regarding Rafa’s future ostensibly derives from Cashley’s lack of investment and his lack of faith in how the club is run under him. All roads lead back to Cashley and the lack of trust we all have in him. As Special K, “you cannot deal with people like him…because you can’t trust them”.

    • FatParosite

It’s amazing how many are placated by a loan crock. Rafa smiling?

    • Duh

I don’t know about that, we had plenty of depth, just not much quality. We had a full squad and many of those guys leaving were not used much or at all this season.

Silamani replaces Mitro, Kennedy, Aarons and this Cech lad allows Woodman to go on loan which is what he needs.

Sterry, Colback were not getting a game with us now we are out of the cups.

A slightly curious one was Saivet. He was on the fringe but still I would have expected Rafa to insist on a replacement before he came in as we have had to play him this season once in the league. Perhaps he feels he can switch formations and he has enough with Diame, Merino, Shelvey and Hayden.

There does seem to be a silver lining here; Ashley is making an attempt (somewhat limp wrist-ed one) to keep the club up while not spending any money. He clearly wants to sell the club.

      • nufcslf

No he’s not, he simply doesn’t care at all. 50,000 today should let him know that as well, but nothing will be said.

  • Peaky Magpie

Here we go lads the Mitro move appears to have collapsed according to Ronnie….Fatso will stop this now…

Yes, he is selling alright. He’s hoping that this is enough to stay in the PL, still get top $ for the club without a big outlay.

I am wondering whether one more is coming in, a surprise out of the blue but I doubt it.

    • Jezza

Another very good transfer window for Fatso No money spent and a big chunk of wages off the books. Nevertheless he will be disappointed not to have sold at least one of our first teamers.

Slimani is probably on a pay per play deal and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up hardly kicking a ball for us.
