Rafa Benitez wants to sign his fellow countryman Jonathan Viera in January according to reports on Thursday afternoon.
The Telegraph say that Newcastle United want to bring the Spanish international to Tyneside to help in the push to save the club from relegation, then to build for the future.
The 28 year old attacking midfielder can also play on the wing and he picked up his first full cap for Spain when playing in the World Cup group qualifying 1-0 win over Israel in October.
Despite playing for minnows Las Palmas, Jonathan Viera scored 10 goals and got 9 assists in La Liga in 2015/16, then got 7 goals and 7 assists last season.
However, Las Palmas are really struggling this season and are bottom of La Liga with only 11 points from 17 league matches, looking near certainties for relegation.
The Telegraph say that with the drop looming, Las Palmas are happy to sell their star player in January, rather than risk getting less in the summer.
He still has two goals and three assists this season, which isn’t too bad when you consider Las Palmas have only scored 13 league goals so far this season.
The Telegraph say that as well as Newcastle a number of other Premier League clubs are also showing interest in the attacking midfielder, with Las Palmas believed to be prepared to sell for €20 million (approx £18m).
Newcastle were linked with a move for Jonathan Viera last summer but obviously Mike Ashley’s budget constrictions could never have allowed it.
He looks a really good player and one who would definitely improve the quality at Newcastle.
As with all transfer stories you suspend judgement but with Rafa’s connections and the high esteem he is held in, in Spain, you would always hope he could potentially have a little bit of an edge on other clubs for a lot of Spanish born players in La Liga, if he is backed with the necessary funds.
