Rafa Benitez wants to sign his fellow countryman Jonathan Viera in January according to reports on Thursday afternoon.

The Telegraph say that Newcastle United want to bring the Spanish international to Tyneside to help in the push to save the club from relegation, then to build for the future.

The 28 year old attacking midfielder can also play on the wing and he picked up his first full cap for Spain when playing in the World Cup group qualifying 1-0 win over Israel in October.

Despite playing for minnows Las Palmas, Jonathan Viera scored 10 goals and got 9 assists in La Liga in 2015/16, then got 7 goals and 7 assists last season.

However, Las Palmas are really struggling this season and are bottom of La Liga with only 11 points from 17 league matches, looking near certainties for relegation.

The Telegraph say that with the drop looming, Las Palmas are happy to sell their star player in January, rather than risk getting less in the summer.

He still has two goals and three assists this season, which isn’t too bad when you consider Las Palmas have only scored 13 league goals so far this season.

The Telegraph say that as well as Newcastle a number of other Premier League clubs are also showing interest in the attacking midfielder, with Las Palmas believed to be prepared to sell for €20 million (approx £18m).

Newcastle were linked with a move for Jonathan Viera last summer but obviously Mike Ashley’s budget constrictions could never have allowed it.

He looks a really good player and one who would definitely improve the quality at Newcastle.

As with all transfer stories you suspend judgement but with Rafa’s connections and the high esteem he is held in, in Spain, you would always hope he could potentially have a little bit of an edge on other clubs for a lot of Spanish born players in La Liga, if he is backed with the necessary funds.

  • fistsofsteel2

Signing a Spanish player from bottom of league Spanish club??
Makes perfect sense, eh Rafa??!! You’re obviously on to a winner there, Rafa?
    Ridiculous!

    • Phil

Weird as this may sound… Not everything written in a newspaper is actually true.

So wait until something actually happens before getting on rafas back eh?

      • Geordiegiants

You beat me to it, I’ve just wrote similar above.

      • fistsofsteel2

It’s a pity some of Rafa’s other signings weren’t actually true too.

        • KRS1

I think rafa should listen your wise judgement on potential signings. Oh no my mistake, you in fact know fu#k all!

          • fistsofsteel2

Yeah! You a big Joselu fan LOL.

        • Jezza

It’s a pity Rafa was never given sufficient funds to do the job properly.

    • Robert Morris

      Amazed hes stuck around to take abuse from some…..try making bricks without straw…..impossible task with peanuts to spend and an insulting pig for an owner….way too good for us,we would be gone by now without him …if it is taking a chance with expensive players,it is almost impossible with cheap cast offs;

      • Jezza

        Excellent comment.

    • Kneebotherm8

Why you talking to Rafa as if this deal is happening or is ever gonna happen??………….bullsht paper talk and you’re in hook, line and sinker.

  • Paul Patterson

    Not sure if it’s £18m . .

  • Dan Cook

This lad is decent, Las Palmas are just awful. Would be an awesome signing but I doubt we would ever get him, would be the number 10 we are crying out for.

  • TheNutJob

they paid 800k for him & want 20 mill. i know what Fatty will say

    • Kneebotherm8

Break the clubs ,and his, transfer record???…..very doubtful.

      • Jezza

It’s an indication how how far back Ashley has dragged this club that our transfer record has stood for 13 years with no prospect of it ever being broken despite ever rising transfer fees and record levels of television money coming into the club.

        • Mxpx

Shearer is still 2nd too! Going back to the 90s which was a world record at the time we’ve gone a long way downhill from a club that would not just spend but spend well as I think we all agree shearer was a bargain even at £15m

          • Jezza

Yes the mind boggles at the size of fee a 25 year old Alan Shearer would fetch in today’s market.

          • Phil

Man city couldn’t even afford him!!

          • Kneebotherm8

            £100 million plus?………

          • Danimal

He was great value for money. No sell-on value but ten years’ excellent service. Try explaining that concept to Jabba.

          • nufcslf

Would love to see what the amount would be, but very few clubs in the world would be able to afford it.

        • Kneebotherm8

When time stood still,we’re in a Mike Ashley time warp.

    • Jezza

Ha, he wouldn’t even pay the 800 grand.

  • Shipcote Willy

Two words sum it up. No chance!
Ashley spending £18m? Be lucky if Rafa gets £1.8m. A good prospect but like most of Rafa’s summer targets totally out of our reach with Ashley in charge.

    • Jezza

Isn’t it disgraceful that NUFC are no longer able to pay the same transfer fees we were routinely paying 12 to 15 years ago despite monetary inflation, exponential inflation in the transfer market and a colossal increase in television revenue coming into the club. That’s what comes with a fat greedy parasite creaming off every last penny from of the club.

      • Mitros gotta start

Blame mike baldwin….he wasted all our money…..put us back 10 years…..ashley has been even more gun shy ever since

        • Jezza

I’m not defending McClaren at all but to be fair the players signed during his time were all picked by Graham Carr.

        • Danimal

Just to remind me, was this when Mike Baldwin (or more likely his paymasters) bought Wijnaldum, Thauvin, Shelvey, Mitrovic and Townsend over two transfer windows? Have we recouped a very large chunk of that money (with more to come when Shelvey and Mitro go)? Or has it been written off? Just checking.

          • Mitros gotta start

And how many of them are playing for newcastle united right now?

          • Danimal

I didn’t say they they were, although Wijnaldum and Townsend are streets ahead of anything we have now. I’m making the point that the money has largely been recouped. People are talking as if poor Mr Ashley got his fingers burned to the tune of tens of millions of pounds. In the sense that we got relegated, yes he did get burned. But that was entirely his own fault and fully deserved, for his ridiculous management model.

          • Mitros gotta start

I guess our definitions of success are different….yours is the same as ashleys…buy players get rid of them as quick as you can as long as you make money off them…..even if you get relegated in the process…..mine is get players in that improve the team and help you win something or improve your league position

          • Danimal

Just to be absolutely clear, I have nothing in common with that appalling man. I was making the point that his apologists talk as if he blew a fortune on us that year in an uncharacteristic burst of generosity and that, as very naughty boys, we deserve never to have a penny spent on our team ever again. He did nothing of the kind, it was just another cack-handed chapter in his long, unpleasant and consistently incompetent reign.

      • Danimal

I can hear the Clarko-Fleckman bus from ‘Monksaton’ approaching. Once you’ve digested their calm, rational arguments, you’ll soon realise there’s a good reason for our new place at the bottom of the food chain.

        • Jezza

          Brilliant.

  • fistsofsteel2

Look at his stats. He hasn’t made more than 28 appearances per season since 2012. Does Rafa really think this player will make a difference….lol.
He cost them £800k, and we’re going to pay circa £20million? Paella smells a bit off!

    • Damon Horner

Since Rafa didn’t write the article it’s hard to know what he thinks.

      • fistsofsteel2

Rafa thinks Joselu is good enough to be a first team choice……..there you go.

        • Phil

I don’t see the relevance of Joselu or paella to this article?

          • fistsofsteel2

The point is Rafa thinks Joselu (abysmal) is a good enough (Spanish) player to warrant first team selection, so on that basis whoever Rafa signs will be an underwhelming disappointment…….and if this Viera is on his radar expect to be disappointed.
The ‘paella’ was an allusion to the fact this player cost less than £1million and is now being touted for circa £20million…..who’s going to be getting rich out of this if it’s true? We seem to have moved on from dodgy deals for dodgy French players to dodgy deals for dodgy Spanish players…….progress?

          • Mitros gotta start

Aye….at least most spanish players have hearts bigger than peas

          • Phil

Very dodgy comment. With not an ounce of sense.
You are now accusing Rafa of signing Spanish players so he can receive some sort of back hander?
The mind really does boggle reading some of the stuff on here mind!!

          • Danimal

If a player’s value increased from £1m to £20m while on our books most people would be happy (none more so than the fireplace vandal, who would immediately sell him). I think it’s a bit shellfish of you to be scoring cheap points about the player’s origins. Anyway, no doubt this story will be tomorrow’s fish and chip paper.

  • Dillon Tovak

    28. £18m. Fat Mike won’t shell out sorry Rafa.

  • Blackburn1066

Ash will not spend 20 Mil, He could and will if he can sell Mitro and shelv

    • Jezza

Ashley will be looking to sell Mitro and/or Shelvey to recoup that £11.5 million net spend in the summer. Any money he brings in this window will be going straight into his pocket.

      • Phil

You would need to sell both to have 11.5 mill. Neither would command a figure over that individually.

        • Mitros gotta start

10 mill for mitro and 15 mill for shelvey…..not everyone in the league is as pathetic and cheap as ashley….both young….both good players even if Rafa cant see it

          • Phil

15 mill for shelvey would be great. I don’t personally rate him. I’m not going to say anything on mitro because we have covered that in previous posts.

For a takeover to go through and have somebody willing to spend would be unreal.
            Can’t see it though unfortunately

          • Danimal

Transfer fees for outgoing players are irrelevant. The money is never seen again (like the player)…I think I might have just unwittingly agreed with Clarko, off to find a darkened room.

        • Jezza

You could well be right. We haven’t got a single player on our books now who would command a sizeable transfer fee. That is where 10 years of Ashley assett stripping the playing staff for personal profit has left us.

          • Mitros gotta start

Merino….if ashley can con spuds out of 30 mill for sissoko merino would be worth 50mill….and we would have no problem getting 20 million for lascelles either

          • Danimal

You sound like you’d actually like that to happen?

          • Mitros gotta start

Hell no…..benitez would probably spent it on 10 more joselu’s

          • Danimal

Like Clarko, you really believe that Rafa has been working with a free hand in the transfer market?

          • Mitros gotta start

No….but whats his excuse for his average at best record on transfers for liverpool…napoli…inter…real madrid?

          • Damon Horner

Average at best? Napoli alone he signed Higuain, Callejon, Mertens, Reina, Koullibaly and Albiol.

          • hetonmag

Damon don’t throw any names at that idiot someone mentioned buying Yusuf Yazici and that numpty thought he was a goalkeeper.

          • Damon Horner

Seen that one, Clarko I think.

Should have known better really, anybody who highly rates Mitrovic and thinks Higuain is average probably hasn’t done research or knows little about football.

Probably thinks Higuain is a keeper anyway!

  • HarryHype59

Striker and no ten simply have to be the priority signings in this window!

  • Geordiegiants

Everyone it’s just a rumour, you are all going on like Rafa doesn’t know what he is doing, it’s paper talk.

    • Phil

Glad somebody else doesn’t believe everything printed in a paper!!

  • anyobrien

18 million…. Nee chance with fat boy at the hekm

  • Damon Horner

Can’t see it personally. Definitely not a priority.

  • Awaymag

    Maybe the next remmy cabella….

    • Phil

      Maybe just the latest rumour….

  • Danimal

Until I saw the fee. Sorry, to rephrase that, until I saw there is a fee.

    • GToon

Exactly! As soon as I saw it was double digits I thought no chance!

  • GToon

Any club in the EPL would pay that much if they wanted him. All apart from one that is.

  • Steven05

How many positive comments were made when we signed that no hope player Merino?

    • Clarko

      A bunch.

      • Steven05

Sorry – I should have been specific – I meant on this very website

        • Phil

Full of optimism and intelligent comments on this site! Take the guy below for instance…

He claims Rafa is buying dodgy Spanish players so he in some way can benefit financially!

        • Clarko

          A bunch.

          • nufcslf

            It’s all Cashley’s fault…..again….

          • Clarko

            Speak of the devil…

  • Robert Morris

Im waiting for Benitez to walk when he realizes hes been taken down the garden path by a predictable owner who started this selling game years ago…..called his every move so many times……..,why should he change now……Hope he walks rather than grub around for poor players.

    • Mitros gotta start

He wont resign……and i can give you 5 million reasons why

      • wheyayeman

He can get 5 million reasons at numerous top flight clubs in Europe or even more in China. What did Rafa do to make you hate him? Oh you fell in love with Mitrovic

        • Mitros gotta start

He tells lies to the fans….he is too stubborn to put his best team out…his treatment of some of his players is disgusting(going back long before us) his record in the transfer market is average at best…need i go on?

          • Vladimir Biggski

Are you related to John McDonnell?

          • Mitros gotta start

            Never heard of him

        • Mitros gotta start

Please god yes….china would be ideal….we will even let him take drosselu….2 for 1 deal

        • Vladimir Biggski

Mitro who’s missed as many sitters as Joselu

      • Robert Morris

You are probably right…..onward and upward….

    • Vladimir Biggski

Ashley is stringing everyone along. No intention to sell unless at a massive profit. This season is all about pocketing the tv cash for Ashley. He loves a gamble and this year he has took a punt on Rafa.

  • Wor Lass

” He still has two goals and three assists this season, which isn’t too bad when you consider Las Palmas have only scored 13 league goals so far this season.” Joselu has 3 goals and 1 assist so far and we`ve only scored 20 goals this season. Doesn`t sound like too much of an upgrade.

    • Danimal

About 40% vs 20%? Lies, statistics and all that. Take your pick.

    • Paul Busby

Joselu is a Striker and this guy is Winger/CAM so not really the right comparison to make I guess.

      • Wor Lass

What we urgently need is a striker. This lad could be excellent – Merino looks like he could have been a really good buy – but he`s not really what we need right now. Unless, of course, Ritchie might head out to give Rafa some spending money. I hope noot.

        • Paul Busby

Personally I think we need a no10 more than a striker, but with both positions in desperate need.
LB and Goalkeeper also on the list.

  • Rich Lawson

More likely to be Patrick than Jonathan !

    • Mitros gotta start

More likely to be vera duckworth than patrick viera

  • S.G.M.

When I scrolled down and saw Porters name, I thought id come straight to the comments. There just as bad.

  • That deal will be massive as this is the player we need in that n. 10 role.
If we can also tie Kennedy, Joe Heart and hopefully a striker we could be in contention for a top 10 finish.
