Transfer Rumours

Newcastle interested in signing Aaron Lennon – ESPN

Aaron Lennon has been linked a number of time in the past with a move to Newcastle United.

Now with 13 days to go until the closing of the January transfer window, it is reported that Newcastle are once again looking at a possible transfer.

The winger was allegedly offered to Newcastle back in summer 2014, Lennon moving a year later to Goodison Park.

There are clear reasons as to why Everton may be keen to move the winger on now.

Aaron Lennon turns 31 in April and sees his current contract end in June.

He has no chance of being offered another one and with Bolasie now coming back to full fitness and £20m+ spent on Theo Walcott, the writing is on the wall for the former Spurs player.

ESPN say their ‘sources’ have told them that Newcastle are considering making a move as Rafa Benitez looks desperately for value for money signings who could make a difference in this relegation run-in.

Lennon has done ok against Newcastle in the past and scored for both Everton and Spurs against the Magpies.

However, with Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy all contributing to varying degrees this season, maybe Newcastle fans wouldn’t see another winger as a key signing to make, especially if any budget is tight.

Aaron Lennon has actually featured in 15 of Everton’s 23 Premier League matches with nine starts and six off the bench, although he hasn’t contributed any goals or assists.

He always has looked a ‘busy’ winger, seemingly set to do something but not rarely producing a great end product. However, his pace and trickery can often unsettle teams.

As off the pitch problems also contributed, the winger only managed six league starts and five off the bench last season, scoring no goals but getting one assist.

Newcastle are desperate for extra quality to be added, especially going forward, but it remains to be seen if Rafa is actually backed to bring in any signings.

What does look for certain is that any signings will have to be more bargain basement than the ones Everton are making, Fat Sam already splashing out around £50m on Tosun and Walcott.
