Newcastle will face Sunderland in the quarter-finals of the Premier League International Cup.

The competition sees reserve teams from across Europe playing each other, though all matches are played in the UK.

Newcastle reached this stage after winning two and losing one of their three group matches.

The young Magpies beat Sparta Prague 2-1 back in October, before going down 2-1 to Liverpool the following month.

Qualification for the knockout stages came courtesy of a 3-1 win last Wednesday over PSV Eindhoven.

No date or venue has been confirmed but the quarter-final will be played on Wearside.

Newcastle United Official announcement:

‘Newcastle United will face north east rivals Sunderland away from home in the quarter-final of the Premier League International Cup.

United’s reward for progressing to the knockout stage of the competition is a Tyne-Wear derby tie with the Black Cats, who were beaten 5-0 by FC Porto in the final of last season’s competition.

The Magpies progressed from Group A, with wins over Sparta Prague and PSV Eindhoven sandwiching a defeat at Liverpool, while Sunderland made it out of Group B, winning two and drawing one of their three group games.

Further details, including a confirmed date and venue for the tie, will be announced in due course.’
