Nathan Jones looks ahead to Newcastle “It’s about time we had a real romantic one”

Nathan Jones is happy with life at the moment.

A new long-term contract announced earlier today and Luton Town set to rise up again to League One, only four years after bouncing back from the Conference/National League.

Manager Nathan Jones and his Luton players have an 11 point cushion in terms of automatic promotion back to fourth top in League Two and the FA Cup draw has been the proverbial cherry on the cake.

The Luton boss says ‘It will be a fantastic occasion going up’ to Newcastle, ‘a wonderful stadium full of tradition and Newcastle are coming back to the good times’.

I hope he’s right!

Nathan Jones says this cup-tie is a ‘real romantic one’ and ‘the beauty of the Cup’.

Luton will be backed by more fans than they have had in some home League Two matches this season, with over seven and a half thousand having already bought tickets.

I feel a little bit jealous of Luton…

I wouldn’t swap supporting Newcastle for anything and I wouldn’t swap Rafa Benitez for many – but it would be great to just have that positivity where everybody is pulling together and you don’t have the evil presence of a Mike Ashley haunting your club.

Nathan Jones:

“It will be a wonderful occasion in terms of pitting our wits against a Premier League outfit and that is the beauty of the Cup.

“It is the romance of the Cup and it’s about time we had a real romantic one, so we are pleased.

“It’ll be a fantastic occasion going up there, St James Park is a wonderful stadium full of tradition and Newcastle are coming back to good times.

“It’s a great tie for us.

“It (agreeing new contract with Luton) has been going on since August.

“The timing has meant that it has come out now, and we would have liked to have done it earlier, but manager’s contracts are slightly more complicated than player ones.

“As soon as the club offered me the opportunity to extend my contract I wanted to do that, because I want to be here for a while.

“We believe we are building something here and for that there needs to be stability – that starts with the board and the manager and then right through out.

“We’re considering all things (in January transfer window), we don’t need too much, but if the opportunity comes for us to strengthen our squad then we want to do that.

“We constantly keep saying that we want to keep moving forward. Every single window we want to keep moving forward and what we won’t do now is rest on our laurels and think ‘We’re top of the league, we’re in a good place’.

“If the opportunity arises for us to strengthen our squad, to move forward, safely, with better, then we will.”
