Michael Owen believes that Rafa Benitez will be thinking priorities ahead of Sunday.

The Newcastle boss surprised everybody when playing such a strong team in the FA Cup third round clash with Luton.

Apart from giving Freddie Woodman a game in goal and protecting first choice Karl Darlow, the outfield 10 were basically his first team.

Newcastle had a clear week before facing Swansea seven days later and that was obviously key to his decision.

However, back in December, the Newcastle boss made numerous changes to his side to face Manchester City. Ever the pragmatist, Rafa Benitez played a weaker line-up against the champions-elect as he had only three days before a vital relegation clash with Brighton.

Michael Owen thinks Benitez will be thinking more about trying to get a win against Burnley on Wednesday in the Premier League, than an unlikely looking victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup.

The former Newcastle striker also highlights an amazing statistic when it comes to how both Chelsea and Newcastle have fared in the FA Cup in recent times.

Under Mike Ashley, shockingly Newcastle have never reached the fifth round of the FA Cup, this season their 11th attempt.

In contrast, if Chelsea progress as the bookies expect against Newcastle, it will be 18 times out of the last 20 that the blues have reached the fifth round. In addition, Chelsea have won the FA Cup six times in the last 21 years.

Michael Owen believes that Chelsea will win but that it will be a low scoring match, with no more than two goals in the game.

If Newcastle could find a goal or two then they could certainly be in business.

Chelsea beat Brighton 4-0 in the Premier League but Conte’s team in the other five of their last six games (all competitions) have seen them score no goals in three of the matches and only one in each of the other two games. With Norwich only conceding one goal in over three and a half hours against Chelsea, Newcastle could stand every chance of keeping it tight at the back, then who knows…

Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:

“Newcastle have not reached the fifth round since 2006 and I cannot see the Magpies getting a result at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

“The Blues have reached the fifth Round in 17 of the last 19 seasons and I expect Antonio Conte’s side to win a low-scoring affair on Sunday.

“Newcastle entertain Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday and it would be no surprise to see Rafa Benitez prioritise three points against the Clarets over the FA Cup.

“Tip is Chelsea to win and under 2.5 goals at 12/5.”

with the current players i expect Newcastle to lose on Sunday & get a point at best off Burnley. sorry, but the defence always makes at least one error & the forwards can`t score

    • grantham mag

I can not see us getting a thing against Burnley, bottom three coming very soon.

  • Dillon Tovak

Are those stats really astounding, shocking and amazing??
As a Newcastle fan I know we get knocked out straight away.
Stop the press, we’re [email protected] in cups.

Realistically with Barca’ in the next Champion’s League game, the FA Cup is the only chance Conte has of silverware this season, expect a strong team.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Norwich certainly gave them a good game in two hundred and ten minutes of football it went to penalties. However with Sky’s obsession of putting us on T.V every game at a time when a lot of fans will struggle to make kick off it’s not going to be easy playing Burnley in the cup. Still got a chance and Perez will be our main hope for this one.

Well it was a fine transfer window again. Sure we were slow to begin with but we really took off with that sensational 6month loan of a player Chelsea forgot they had and several unsuccessful attempts to sell various players we absolutely had to keep to stand any chance of survival! Why doesn’t anyone listen to Ghost rider + Clarko – Ashley really wants us to be a success!

    • ghostrider

He does want us to be a success but he doesn’t want the club to die a death in an attempt to try to follow the numpty clubs that are attempting to keep up with the elite who are all choreographed to fit the jigsaw.

I think I’d rather win many games in the championship than lose most games playing sickening football in this jumped up choreographed league.

      • wheyayeman

Ashley’s level of investment / involvement is fine for Division 1 he might do well there and p**s off less people every single day. It still wont impact the impoverished and oppressed in his workhouses but it would be a start.

        • ghostrider

Most of the country’s oppressed man, it’s not just down to Ashley.

          • wheyayeman

I’m speaking about Ashley and his businesses not the country. The man is appalling he’s been found out he’s not in the least contrite he boasts in his wealth and arrogance he’s not oppressed!

          • ghostrider

Look mate. If Ashley was handing Rafa 50 million here and 50 million there for players, you would be boasting about him and singing his praises and wouldn’t give a tuppeny toss for supposedly oppressed workers he presides over.

You’re taking it personal because he won’t sanction deals.
The man takes that much abuse until he gives fans what they want and then the fans calm down until he goes all careful again…and then the abuse of his character comes right back out.

If I owned the club I would do the same as Ashley after all the abuse he’s took, 70% of which isn’t even warranted.
