The Rafa Benitez Swansea press conference has taken place on Friday lunchtime.

The United boss has confirmed that Jamaal Lascelles is available for the match, despite having been subbed after half on hour against Luton last Saturday.

However, Mitrovic, Lejeune and Gamez will all still be missing.

Predictably, Rafa was asked about the January transfer window.

The manager confirming that 12 days into it he still doesn’t know what his budget is and in terms of selling players to help buy others, the United boss says that the club haven’t received an offer for anybody in the first team squad.

Rafa Benitez Swansea press conference:

(Asked if knows how much he has to spend in January yet) “No – but we are still working.

(Asked if Newcastle will make signings) “I hope so.

“We have a lot of people working, talking to agents, giving us names and options. I have to concentrate on games and Saturday is an important game for us.

“We are working (on transfers) but there is no news at the moment. We don’t have any offers. All the names that you can read in the press, some of them are not true.

“Swansea have a new manager and they are quite organised, quite disciplined. We need to be sure that we don’t lose the game but have the mentality that we will win. It will be tough.

“We have to approach this game with the same mentality as the last few games. It will be a massive game for us, a massive game for them. Hopefully we will win.

“We have Jesus Gamez, Florian Lejeune and Aleksandar Mitrovic injured. Mitrovic has been running and is closer. Those three players will not be available.

“We have to move players because we need (to free up) positions in the squad but we do not have to sell to buy.

“If players go it will be because we have replacements but we are not interested in loans out.”

  • Paul Patterson

“We have to move players because we need (to free up) positions in the squad but we do not have to sell to buy.”
    A slight contradiction there.
“We need to be sure that we don’t lose the game but have the mentality that we will win”
That’s my biggest worry about how we will set up tomorrow.

  • TheNutJob

Fatty`s a bad, bad man & Rafa will get no dosh.

    • Leazes

Fancy a job as Donald Trump’s speech writer?

      • TheNutJob

        😂😂
in Fatty`s case it`s no good writing 5 paragraphs when 1 line will do

The only things he does to excess are drinking, eating, hoying up and taking the p*$$ out of us.

You beat me to that one (by 3 hours!).

    • Peaky Magpie

😂 Kanye West eat your heart out 😂

  • robbersdog

This is a rather contradictory article; it implies that the transfer budget is f*ck-all, but Rafa actually states… we do not have to sell to buy.

I’m just guessing here…but I reckon that Rafa knows far more than he’s letting on, and that there might be a bit of money there to buy one or two reinforcements.

    • StevieB

      What gives you that impression?

      • robbersdog

If Rafa is saying that he doesn’t have to sell players before he buys, then it would suggest that he knows that funds are available to strengthen the squad.

Just because he doesn’t know what his specific ‘budget’ is, it doesn’t mean that that the club aren’t trying to buy any players.

        • StevieB

Well it mustn’t be enough or he’d have a few “over the line” by now 🤔

    • Tony English

Or you could interpret “we do not have to sell to buy” as “I have not been told I have to sell to buy” because he hasn’t been told anything.

    • Georgia Peter

      Porciestreet;-
Yes he knows a lot more than he’s admitting to cos he’s still here. Any other decent gaffa would be long gone by now. He is surely in Mandy’s handbag with massive promises.wait and see.

  • mentalman

a lot of cloak and dagger stuff from rafa

  • SAMTHECAT

Last 2 paragraphs don’t make sense, we need to move players out if we move players in but we don’t need to sell to buy, contradiction. Rafa must be thinking, keep the club up, takeover, stay, anything else leave.

    • Duh

I think the way most people are interpreting that statement is that he has funds (so does not need to sell to buy from a financial perspective) but the squad is full so, if players are brought in, some will need to move on from an operational point of view.

Perhaps I am naive, I believe the money is there; surplus money from the summer when we failed to bring people in when we were trying to + the imminent TV money payment (I am sure any seller can wait a week or 2 for the cash to physically paid to them). Perhaps 30m but that would include agent fees and more importantly, wages unless someone can be moved out.

The challenge remains: January is difficult to pull off deals, as always there is a “chain” and last but not least, the club has proven inept in doing deals under Ashley.

Loans is still our best bet and I have to say I am alarmed as to why we have not done 1-2 of these already along with getting shot of people like Colback who just do not feature.

      • Danimal

        Perhaps???

    • mactoon

We have a 25 man squad registered with the FA. If we bring a new player in he has to take the place of one of the current players in the 25 in order to play in the Premiership.

      • Mitros gotta start

No problem there if mitro saivet and mbemba are registered….not like they play anyway

        • steve

Despite all 3 being better than others who regularly play.

          • Mitros gotta start

Correct….shame our world class manager doesnt see it that way

  • anyobrien

Walk away rafa with your head held high before its to late…. Fatty is taking the pizz

  • Mrkgw

The despicables continue to treat Rafa, his players and the supporters with none other than sheer contempt. Appalling.

    • Mitros gotta start

      Nothing new then….

  • Leazes

It’s been over a year since the Chronicle proclaimed that Rafa had FULL control over transfers…. that was a lie.

    • hetonmag

Why don’t you post on there message board and tell them, oh I forgot you’re banned. Awful journalists them pesky Chron writers banning The Mags answer to Ian Fleming.

      • Leazes

They don’t like criticism….. or pointing to the fact that one is a Liverpool Fan and another a Blackburn fan…..

…. in the words of the nut Job…

‘Ryder he tell lies, him no good for United.’

Rumour was the Hosulu was actually a hit man cunningly brought in to see to Ashley. Trouble is he keeps missing

    • Danimal

Sadly, I don’t think they’d have enough of the lethal stuff to break through the compulsive liar’s ample blubber reserves. I suspect he’d just feel a bit of a pr1ck. Then he’d carry on acting like one for another 11 years.

  • Peaky Magpie

Ffs can someone tell Ronnie we now 100% know that Jacob Murphy supported NUFC as a boy, sick of bloody reading it 😡😡😡

  • Peaky Magpie

We know things are bad when we haven’t been linked with James McCarthy,Pepe Reina or Das Bost yet !!!

    • Rich Lawson

More likely Das Boot,we’re sinking just as fast as they were !

      • Peaky Magpie

        😂😂😂

  • Rob

Only Merino and Lascelles would bring any worthy funds in and both are crucial to our survival.

It’s getting to the stage where Ashley has plundered everything possible.

If I was Rafa I’d be open to offers from serious clubs who want to compete.

    • Paul Patterson

Shelvey and Mitrovic could bring in £10m+ each. I wouldn’t be surprised if either/both go this window . .

      • Rob

Not going to happen unfortunately. Shelvey has confirmed he’s a liability and every club knows Mitrovic isn’t wanted. Even if it did £20 million doesn’t buy decent players now.

        • Paul Patterson

I believe both can still offer something in our situation, but the manager has never fancied Mitrovic and now he seems to be trusting Shelvey less and less.
Someone will pay £10m for each despite their sketchy records.

        • Jezza

Certainly not when £19.5 million of it goes straight into the FCB’s pocket never to be seen again.

    • robbersdog

Not so; I hear from a very reliable source that an unnamed European club is putting together a deal to purchase Joselu. The fee is a bag of stale winegums.

      • Tony Mann

Nowt wrong with stale wine gums. I buy bagfuls from poundland – but I do admit they’re better value than that nugget.

        • Rob

I think the wine gums might present a better option for holding the ball up than jokelu.

          • Tony Mann

Admittedly, mouldy wine gums are stickier.

    • GToon

I wouldnt blame him if he left. Ashley deserves it.

  • Peaky Magpie

When I first saw that headline I thought Suggs had bought the club !

    • nufcslf

Classic, I have Madness playing as I read this. It’s all a bit ‘One Step Beyond’ while fatty is in charge. ‘Tomorrow’s Just Another Day” was the track playing.

      • Peaky Magpie

Yes”Welcome To The House Of Fun” alright 😁

        • Rich Lawson

”And so begins another weary day” (Grey Day)

          • nufcslf

And it is all going to add up to a massive ‘Cardiac Arrest’ for us poor sodden fans😞

          • thewildchimp

Yea, I think those songs sum up ‘Our House’ very well…

  • Tony Mann

Hey Rafa, Mike here, How you doing? Not so good eh? I know we haven’t spoken for months but I’ve been busy in Shirebrook and going on my hols.
Zero hour contracts and that stuff takes time to sort out you know.
Anyway…. how about applying zero hours contracts to the lads? Bet they would love more time off eh ?
You know that money, every penny, that was promised for…well, it’s hit a bit of a snag. Speak next year …. if you’re still around.

    • Peaky Magpie

      Hi Mike,Rafa here…..f**k reet off !!!

      • Tony Mann

That is not very nice. (where are the smileys when you want one.)

        • Peaky Magpie

          😁😁😁

      • Jezza

And so say all of us.

  • GToon

I think there will be progress in January but unfortunately I think it will involve the usual “line”. I could email the club and tell them the “line” is January 31st but I don’t think it will have any effect. It’s funny how this “line” can’t be seen when exiting the club.

  • Kneebotherm8

Whoever said Rafa was in control of transfers?……………………………get real………..

  • wheyayeman

Rafa marra I appreciate you and all you wanted to do for the Toon but If the fat lad upstairs isn’t going to sell after yet more lies about the clubs sale, transfers, investment then walk away. He’s not going to change and you’re not going to be able to manage. Sadly we’re stuck with this nightmare for the time being but at least we don’t work for him. You deserve better.
