I hated Mark Hughes as a player and if anything, it has got even worse since he moved into management.

He really is pathetic.

I just knew he wouldn’t give Newcastle any credit for their very deserved victory on Monday afternoon and sure enough…

Newcastle were by far the better team and created many more clear chances with Jack Butland very busy as he kept the Magpies at bay for so long.

On the other hand, Stoke just hoofed the ball up the pitch hoping that Peter Crouch might be somewhere in that direction.

Atsu could have had a hat-trick, Ciaran Clark somehow cleared the ball from right on their goal-line instead of scoring, Dwight Gayle should have had a penalty, with a number of other chances for United before Perez’ excellent winner after fine work from Murphy.

Mark Hughes’ reaction?

A deluded Mark Hughes…’Newcastle have come here and done us on the break late on…we had any number of chances to score’.

As the BBC Sport stats show below, Stoke only had three efforts on target and two of those were in the last few minutes as Mark Hughes threw more men in and around Peter Crouch, Darlow making a couple of exceptional saves.

However, don’t believe the very sour Mark Hughes, if Newcastle hadn’t won it would have been a travesty.

Mark Hughes:

“We are disappointed to have lost the game because clearly we deserved to have taken something out of it.

“Things just aren’t going for us at the moment, this one wasn’t to be, and it clearly wasn’t the result we were hoping for.

“We simply have to pick ourselves back up and get on with it because there is no point feeling sorry for ourselves.

“A lot of this is down to our own making, some has been down to misfortune, that isn’t excuse making, it is the reality of things.

“With regards to the game today Newcastle have come here and done us on the break late on, just after we had lost Erik Pieters to injury and were having to reshuffle.”

“We weren’t able to get guys over quick enough, they put the ball across and end up scoring the goal that wins them the game.

“We had any number of chances to score ourselves though, I seem to recall their keeper making three or four fantastic saves and there were plenty of other opportunities too.

“It’s fair to say that we are going through a difficult period at the moment, but there are plenty of games left and we will turn the corner.”

    Taxi for Mark Hughes!

    • Andy Mac

Actually it would be better for us all if Stoke kept him for the rest of the season. That would be two down (Agent Pardwho doing a grand job with the Baggies) and then only one other place to worry about ?

      • nufcslf

Very true, lets hope so. Got to hope Swansea’s win against Watford was a one off as well. Bring on Saturday and another 3 points. Oh! and Cashley out……

  • anyobrien

Makes the win even more sweeter

  • Tino o

We should have been out of sight by half time although darlow pulled off a couple of good saves felt comfortable and confident we would win. 1st sacking of the year coming up

  • Leazes62

Stoke may well ” Turn that corner..” but he wont be there to see it

  • justchampion

I’m pretty sure Hughes was confident of a win beforehand. What a prized plum he really is.

  • Wor Lass

Couldn`t be better. He really is the most mealy-mouthed, miserable [email protected] out there.

    • TheNutJob

Go for a pint with him and Wenger

      • Wor Lass

Down at the Nag`s Head – big Mike`s got the kareoke booked and the fire lit.

  • Albert Stubbins

He maybe is pathetic, but seriously do you think Rafa would be eulogysing about the opposition in similer circumstances? The man’s on the brink of losing his job ffs

    • nufcslf

Being honest and realistic would come across so much better though. I think kidding youself only in front of live cameras makes you look like a right tit. Doesn’t mean you have the lost the plot and aren’t going to be on the training pitch the following day to start correcting the situation. Also gives the players something to think about, rather than thinking nothing is wrong.

  • TheNutJob

Such a great footballer, such a sour man

  • Tony Mann

Nasty temperament as a player (although he was good) becomes a blinkered viewpoint when things don’t go his way. Good riddance – Stoke fans have a nasty attitude as well. We lost 4-0 there a few years back and I was properly scared when we came out. My Ex and her young son were like me – bricking it. Horrible fans – no class.

    • TheFatController

I remember that. They retro-fitted some excuse to justify indiscriminate violence but it seemed to be motivated by ginola being kicked relentlessly and an inevitable red card against them in the first half.

I remember they turned an old fouple’s vehicle over – which was parked opposite the police station!

Agree that they have no class. Fans of other clubs have agreed it’s like stepping back in time going there …

      • gallowgate26

What do you expect from a place that gave the world the Staffordshire bull terrier? 😂

        • GToon

Hoy steady on mate. Mines just sat behind me having a nap! He’s an aggressive little git tho, so u r right!

      • Tony Mann

Wrong era mate – but I witnessed that they have not changed 15 years on. Mindless thugs.

      • Danimal

What I remember about that is Lou Macari going on and on and on in the press afterwards, about Ginola being a diver. In the next round against Arsenal, he was again kicked all over the place and got a yellow card for diving when he was hacked down, clean through on goal. Eventually he lost his rag and got sent off. Another glorious cup run ruined, courtesy of a referee being influenced by the media. Not that I bear a grudge. Happy New Year.

    • Kev Newcastle England

We buried them 4 0 man

      • Tony Mann

We got battered – think it was about 2010/11.

        • Kev Newcastle England

Right.I mean the League Cup tie when we thrashed them away….hell on that night too.

    • Mitros gotta start

  • TheNutJob

His next league match is away to Man U, best of luck on that 1 Mark

    • Tino o

Not sure if he’ll make it as long as that

  • Leazes Ender

All managers are media trained…. you’ll not get the reply you want Jackie, despite writing about it at every opportunity….. are you media trained?

Yes you are! so you know the answer to your own puzzling false position.

It’s a cheap and lazy form of journalism….. you could even describe this a fake fury.

    • Mark Davies

You really are an odd one settee ender. We win you moan we draw tou moan we lose you moan.

Fans who go are ashley apologetic happy clappers.

Anyone who writes a post you dont agree with again gets attacked on a sarcastic level.

Why do you even bother reading the posts or better still write one yourself explaining your views properly.

Anyway happy new year to you and I hope you find some happier times in it.

Great win today by the way!

      • TheNutJob

        At least he`s consistent

        • Geordiegiants

          He certainly is that.

      • anyobrien

        Ya reet there kida.

      • hetonmag

He’s one mixed up person who has a general grievance on life, the bright side of life is passing him by.

  • joe mac

lets hope the chants are right…and he does get bladdered in the morning!….the man united chip on the shoulders still there!… gimp!

  • gallowgate26

Honestly what do Stoke expect when they sell their best player and resort to lumping the ball up to a 37 year old Peter Crouch? It’s like Stoke City circa. 2009. Maybe this is the season that the PL is finally rid of them….

    • 1957

Yeah and only getting £5m for him, I bet their supporters are furious about the Hoss signing for us…

      • Mitros gotta start

  • GToon

He was probably preoccupied with trying to get home safely. When they lost 5-0 away at Spurs the players got the train home and so did large numbers of their fans. Once it got around the players were on the train there were a few confrontations between fans and players resulting in a police escort for the players at stoke and the public being held on the train until the players had got off. Hilarious. A friend of a friend is a copper up there and he was told to prepare his riot gear! Hahaha. So yeah, perhaps Hughes had his journey home on his mind!

  • GToon

Hoy Clarko I bet they spent less than us so that’s why we won!

    • Geordiegiants

      Ha ha

  • Martin

Master-stroke by Hughesy to rest Shaqiri. He looked about as interested in the game as Sissoko did when we got relegated.

  • Paul Patterson

A manager fighting for his job, or deflecting flack for a pay off . .

    • nufcslf

Sounds like a perfect Cashley man in the offering. Look out……

      • mentalman

He’ll be wanting a pay off to go for the wales managers job

  • Vladimir Biggski

Hughes was a cheat and a bad loser as a player and his terrible attitude has deteriorated as a manager.

  • FatParosite

You’re getting sacked in the morning…..sacked in the moooorning….

  • magpiefifer

Hughes is like Moyes and some others – never giving any credit to the opposition,no class!

  • Down Under Mag

Wouldn’t expect anything less than this off any manager under pressure for his job – let alone this man.

Stoke had slightly more possession but had very few clear cut chances and we had any number that had Clark or Atsu had their shooting boots on would have been out of sight by half time. That’s without getting started on our obligatory unawarded penalty shout (that while normally I feel Gayle falls over too easily this one was a clear spot kick). We had pace and Stoke got away without seeing anyone sent off yet again despite their usual Neanderthal tactics. Bring on Swansea.

  • Alreet

Oh dear. Your boys only started playing once we had scored. We had a bad miss from clark then atsu and diame. You could have been buried by the first half.

    19 shots to 10 tells a story.
