With Newcastle United’s move for Nicolai Jorgensen appearing to falter, an exclusive on Sunday morning claims that Luan could be signed as an alternative.
Luan plays in Brazil for club side Gremio and has made a couple of substitute appearances for the national side.
Set to turn 25 in March, the striker is reported to have been watched by Liverpool for some time.
However, Gremio are said by The Sun to have made clear they are keen to sell this month and have told Newcastle they can have him for £17.5m.
There had been claims from Mike Ashley’s people that the owner was willing to back Rafa Benitez with a mystery ‘£20m striker’ but an initial £12m bid was labelled derisory by Feyenoord, with little progress since.
The best part of a week later and the Dutch club are insisting their £20m valuation is met, with Newcastle said to be nowhere near that figure.
Luan is yet another name added as a possible alternative by the media, along with Troy Deeney, Islam Slimani and others.
What is clear is that Newcastle desperately need more goals added to their squad and without that, it is set to be a real struggle to avoid relegation.
Luan only has a strike rate of around a goal every four matches for his club side in Brazil, so not exactly prolific.
Only three days to go until the final day of the transfer window and fans will believe it when they see it, when a new striker arrives for anything remotely close to £20m.
