The Newcastle team v Luton has just been confirmed.

Rafa Benitez surprising and picking more of a Premier League side than a ‘cup team’ in the circumstances.

Priority on staving off relegation under Mike Ashley rather than cup glory…but not stopping a strong selection today.

Woodman, Dummett, Merino and Gayle all come into the team.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Woodman, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Merino, Murphy, Perez,  Gayle

and the Subs:

Darlow, Haidara, Diame, Saivet, Hayden, Joselu, Aarons

That team will please the naysayers on here I think.

    • Kneebotherm8

The same ones will be complaining Lascelles shouldn’t have started,Rafa can’t win with some on this site.

      • hetonmag

        Correct

  • Alreet

Very strong side. Rafa wants this buried quick.

  • gallowgate26

Just don’t know what Rafa will do. I don’t think even the players know until the night before.

    • Kneebotherm8

That’s the way it should be,we don’t want any prima donnas thinking they’re guaranteed a first team spot whatever.
We don’t want any Sissoko’s or Wijnaldum’s in the squad,we seen their sht attitude a couple of years ago.

  • Alreet

    Oh btw. HAHAHAHA @ scumderland

  • robbersdog

I like that line-up. Mind you, I criticised Rafa’s line-ups against both West Ham and Stoke, so what do I know?

  • Mrkgw

Hopefully prove the doubting pundits wrong with that line up.

  • Kev-82

Exactly what Woodman needs, playing alongside experienced players rather than when we usually stick the young ones in with the reserves for the cups. I’d have given Aarons a game too but otherwise happy with the team.

  • Wor Lass

Wow – can hardly believe he`s put out a proper team. No excuses if we can`t put this one to bed. Howay the lads!!

  • 1957

At long last we are putting a team of first team players out in a cup tie, it a welcome change, no excuses for losing this one

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

    Lescelles off. JFC…

  • Wor Lass

1-0! Lascelles off – let`s hope it`s precautionary. We can hardly moan if he`s injured when we wanted a strong team and a cup win.

    • hetonmag

      Exactly.

  • Wor Lass

2-0! Perez again. Oh no, 2-0 … the worst lead in football. What are we thinking of?
Ah, 3-0 – thank God for that!

  • Alreet

Itll do the power of good for morale getting a good win here.

Need to take a few off at HT.

    3-0 goin nuts.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

if this Lescelles injury has any lasting effect we are up a creek

  • Gallowgate Dave

Well I’m not too proud to apologise for my rant a few days ago at us “inevitably” playing a weakened team in the Cup now that we’ve actually played such a strong side and we’re 3vs0 up. Mind for anyone who disagreed with me how brilliant is this? A goal will do wonders for Shelvey’s confidence, two goals will do even more for Perez’s confidence, we’ll all have a warm glow this weekend and we’re (surely?) going to still be in the FA Cup in February which is almost unheard of. The crowd also massively deserve this for turning up in numbers and whisper it but if we keep treating the cup seriously I’ll even start going to cup games again. Bloody great!

  • TheNutJob

whats ganin on do the boys not know i got 4-0 i`ve had it

    • Wor Lass

How`s your kid doing? He should be on here shouting the odds about Jonjo scoring. He hasn`t changed his moniker to Pringle has he?

      • TheNutJob

he`s back to the RVI on Tuesday one more OP & he`ll be back causing havoc

        • Wor Lass

Are they removing the quidditch ball that that nasty Harry Potter inserted up his jacksie? Ha ha! give him all the best from me.

          • TheNutJob

will do, 1st thing he`ll do is go and wind Harry up

        • Wor Lass

Bluddy `ell – SloMo for Jonjo. It`s a good job he`s not back yet!

    • Wor Lass

      Defo had your 4-0 now!

      • TheNutJob

        Dopes

  • Kev-82

What happened with lascelles going off? We really can’t afford him being out injured again.

  • Wor Lass

I see Harry Cornick`s come on – he was great in that Second World War film.

    • robbersdog

Memphis Belle. He sang a song too.

  • Wor Lass

    Uh-oh!

  • Mirandinha9

Rafa’s approach to the match by playing a strong side is what makes him so invaluable for the club going forward. The yes men of Pardew, Carver and McClaren would have played a weakened side today, heightening the risk of us getting turned over. Rafa’s sensible enough to realise any wins inspire the confidence necessary for the side to take back into league matches and principled enough to manage the way he wants to manage, despite the opinions of Cashley and Charnley. NUFC has always been renowned as a cup side and in our 125th year, let’s at least have a real crack at it.

    • Duh

I would have given lacelles the day off though, that’s the only exception. Maybe he would have had lejeune or mbemba had been fit

    • Phil Yare

err, what about last year at oxford??

      • Clarko

err, what about this year at forest??

        • Phil Yare

          aye.

        • Vladimir Biggski

Under strength team, early in the season too. Rafa is the best manager we could hope to have.

          • Clarko

You’re absolutley right, Benitez did play a weak team against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup, which makes the following statement by @Mirandinha9:disqus a load of rubbish:

“Rafa’s approach to the match by playing a strong side is what makes him so invaluable for the club going forward. The yes men of Pardew, Carver and McClaren would have played a weakened side today, heightening the risk of us getting turned over.”

Read the comment, know the context and the subject matter before replying next time Vlad.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Nervy stuff, hopefully we can finish this off and then match up with Boro at home next round.

    • Vladimir Biggski

Nervy only because the ref was rubbish

  • Wor Lass

Well done lads! Shame Ayoze didn`t get his hat trick but a good win, anyway. A tricky tie and we`ve come through it. Let`s just hope the captain`s OK.

    • TheNutJob

you might guess who had the right score !!!!!!!!!!

  • robbersdog

Rafa rarely plays Shelvey and Merino together, but it worked today and I reckon that they could form a potent midfield partnership.

And well done to Perez; his two goals will do wonders for his confidence, and I prefer him to Joselu. In fact, I really liked Rafa’s line-up (Darlow or Elliott will obviously replace Woodman in the league), and I hope he perseveres with it.

    • Vladimir Biggski

I think a five man midfield of Atsu, merino, Hayden, Shelvey and Ritchie is our best bet with the squad as it is. We just need a decent striker to finish things off.

  • nufcslf

Well, nice to be proved wrong, thought that score was going to be at leased reversed. Should have been Merino who came off not Shelvey. Showed who had the experience and who didn’t. Perez with 2 goals, but then never looked like making it a hat-trick. The biggest downside to all of this being fat guts gets more FA Cup money to put in his back pocket from the next round. Hopefully this result can be taken into the Swansea match. Oh! Cashley Out…….

    • Andy Mac

I would have been seriously PO’d if we’d played a reserve team as our next game is a whole week away ?

Absolutely no need to dilute the teams strength even if JL got injured. That could have happened at any time against anyone.

      • nufcslf

        Agreed.
