Today we are asking Newcastle fans what their expectations are for this January transfer window.

Rafa Benitez said back in December that ideally he wanted all new signings to be completed by 15 January and failing that, by 20 January at the very latest.

We are now in the 11th day of the January transfer window and no action so far.

The only action as such, has been younger players heading out on loan deals for the second half of the season, such as Adam Armstrong going to Blackburn.

Pessimists will point to the fact that 10 days have already gone with no new players coming in and only four days, or nine days, depending on how you see it, until Rafa’s transfer deadline.

Optimists will point to Mike Ashley is now back off holiday and still 20 days to go until the final day of the window.

A range of options below, from the most optimistic to the most pessimistic.

Take your pick.

  • Paul Patterson

    Not enough options I’m afraid.
    I expect-
Ashley to back Rafa with a loan signing, maybe two, but with a strong possibility of one, maybe two big money departures . .

  • Shipcote Willy

Where is the option for we won’t sign anyone but one or two of our best players will be sold and the squad will be weaker?

    • cmrowley

      You beat me to it..

  • Clive lancaster

If Mr Charnley cannot sanction transfers then he may as well be sacked and use the saved money if any on transfers?
Honestly i ( can!) cannot believe that the Premiere League allows clowns like Ashley who cannot communicate with their boards, CEO’s, Managers, to own/run clubs. It is an absolute joke!

    • Leazes

He’s the lowest paid ‘Chairman’ in the Premiership so it wouldn’t sanction a weeks wages for a top player.

      He’s not really a Chairman…. there isn’t a board, he’s an accountant running a football club… very badly.

Who he takes advice from only he knows?

      • Leicester Mag

Well rumour has it Micky Mouse has a Charnley watch

        • Leazes

          Where is the Moose?

          • TheNutJob

            Moose is in the hoose

          • Leicester Mag

            No offence intended 😁

  • Allan Barron

M.Ashley doesnt give a fug about anything but M.Ashley the sooner he buggers of the better.

  • Wor Lass

    What expectations?

  • Leicester Mag

Missing option 5+ We sign unknown 27 yr old, once described 10 yrs ago as the new Shola, from Spanish division 3 club Racing Pidgin where in 9 games he’s scored twice. We sell Shelvey / Mitrovich and fail on Deadline day to sign Ronaldo when Real Madrid turn down the offer of Sports direct discount card, Charnley and Bob Moncur say this was a serious attempt. Rafa leaves, first game in Feb sells out

    • Leazes

      Very Likely Leicester.

    • Jezza

Racing Pidgin, ha ha, I like that one.

    • Mitros gotta start

      Still better than the hoss

  • Canters

Where was the Rafa chucks it in and resigns option?

  • Leazes

    I don’t expect the Rafalution to start….

…. I don’t think Benitez has ever expected one either judging by his signings.

  • Jezza

If anything the first team will be weaker after the window closes. Ashley will definitely not back Rafa and I think most of us know that. The concern is that Ashley’s target for this window will be to recoup that £11.5 million net summer spend which could result in somebody like Shelvey and/or Gayle being sold at the last minute.

    • Leazes

I don’t think there’s a need to recoup money, isn’t there still money (£40m) in the kitty and a January TV payment just come in?

      • Jezza

There might be no need but with Ashley there’s always greed.

      • HarryHype59

Indeed there is! Fatty just doesn’t want to spend any money!

    • MinnesoToon

Yep, I can see one or two going out on deadline day. Then the same old excuse of it being too late to get replacements over the line. Money coming in, squad weakened.

      • Jezza

Yes, selling a first team player for big money on the evening of deadline day is Ashley’s favourite trick and he keeps pulling it off over and over again.

        • Peaky Magpie

Lascelles to Spurs would really be the icing !

          • Jezza

Oh yes Fat Ashley will be salivating at the prospect of that transfer. I’m sure the helicopter will be on standby.

          • Leicester Mag

Likewise make sure the generator is working on 3Ms wood chopper

          • Peaky Magpie

          • HarryHype59

One can imagine the fat lad slobbering over a £25m bid for Lascelles!

          • HarryHype59

            This could well happen!

          • Peaky Magpie

And the sad thing is Harry it wouldn’t be a complete shock unlike when Cole went to Man Utd.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

I voted he will not back Rafa and we will be no better off at the end of the window.
I say this because it will be a case of Rafa having to shift players like Mitrovic, Saivet etc
I don’t think they will be able to do this for the money they may be expecting for them and there will be no takers.
I think this sell before you buy has been mooted in certain corners of the press and I would be inclined to think that will be the case.
It’s what I expect Ashley would do given what we already know about him and another gamble to stay up with what we have available would go along with his M.O so far.

  • Leazes

Where is the option that Charnley will achieve his bonus for keeping wages low.

I’ve said this before I know …. but you never know there maybe new readers who don’t know the ‘Charnley paradox’.

Charnley is paid a very low wage, the lowest of any Chairman in the top division circa around £100k. However he can achieve a huge bonus like his S****s D****t counterparts by keeping wages low.

He does this by going along with managers plans and playing for time, then making an excuse when the window closes.

Managers get upset, because it means they become the ‘fall guy’…. Charnley gets huge bonus for achieving his brief….

    … club gets relegated/new manager.

Works a treat if you are an accountant, and the football club is just a problem to overcome.

  • TheNutJob

Nee Rafalution this window then, will we even get Rafaball?

  • Brazilian John

Where’s the option “The Fat f$%& will not back up Rafa and we will be searching for a new manager in February”?

  • Martin

So some people (admittedly perhaps not many) still think that Ashley will back Rafa with some decent or quality ‘key’ new signings. How can this be so? I wonder what other wildly optimistic views they hold.

    • Leicester Mag

      The earth is flat

    • Jimmy_toons

Acid, LSD and mushrooms help you think straight and keep your mind focused.

    • nufcslf

Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny are all real……..

  • anyobrien

Ashley will not back rafa… There will be no take over and rafa will walk… And tbf I don’t blame him for going…. If rafa keeps us up with this squad it will he one of his greatest managerial achievements.

  • Another-brick-in-the-wall

If the teams around/below us keep strengthening (and we don’t) Relegation becomes even more of a possibility.

Rafa has done his bit, Charnley has done his bit, but the person with the final say (Justin Barnes? Mike Ashley? A.N.other?) refuses to allow the strengthening of the team to ensure premiership survival. Why would they deliberately and knowingly do this?

    • HarryHype59

Ashley keeps thinking he can beat the system. In his warped mind, he can keep us up and get £100m min next season without investing.

      • nufcslf

You would think the [email protected] was short a few pennies wouldn’t you!!! or is it the old you don’t become rich from spending your money. Total rse.

  • HarryHype59

He will only sanction one or two loans if the club drops into the bottom three. Otherwise no business will be done regards incoming players.

He could well flog off Mitro or Shelvey to create a surplus in this window. Its all about the short term with wor Mike!

Fleckman will then praise him for making a profit, as is hero gambles with the our EPL future.

  • Philippines

I am usually an optimist but now a realist and gave my vote nevertheless. I was a but surprised to see that mine is also the majority view. Let’s hope for something better.

  • anyobrien

Can anyone tell me what Ashley wants to achieve with us?… What’s it all about?
I can never get my head round it all.

    • Leazes

      • anyobrien

He’s on his way to that then

      • Jimmy_toons

He’s got in for us all never mind just you, or something like that said Frankie Howard.

  • Bobbi fleckman

How can we sign players if we don’t have any transfer funds nor any space to pay wages..

    • HarryHype59

According to the Chronicle your employer is pocketing a tidy wedge of this years TV money!

      • Bobbi fleckman

So you believe in Lee Ryder and The Chronicle hacks. They are just conspiracy theorists lol. Come on guys, be rational for a second. I am not backing Ashley, just saying we really don’t know much as to what’s really happening in the club

Ashley is a problem but he’s not the only problem

        • HarryHype59

          The Chronicle ran an article last summer stating this years TV money was paid as follows;

Lump sum in July 2017 and January 2018

A final lump sum paid in May 2018 that reflects the final position of the club!

In addition the club receives smaller monthly payments of the TV money throughout the season!

Granted, this is the Newcastle Evening Comical! However, from a cash flow and liquidity perspective, it looks more feasible than Sky paying each EPL club a lump sum at the end of the season!

Even if your employer, doesn’t get his pudgy mitts on the cash until the seasons end, he could afford to advance Rafa money for loan deals to safe guard next years £100m plus windfall!

      • hetonmag

Watch out mate you’ll start another Fleckman, Clarko stampede.

        • Bobbi fleckman

Atleast this will be better than Graham Porter and Lee Ryder’s articles lol

          • hetonmag

            Ha ha 😁😁

        • HarryHype59

Clarko …bless him…last summer he argued that Rafa was getting all of the £41m parachute money and the £30m Sissoko money to spend on new players!

    • Danimal

If your theory was correct don’t you think they (the club) would say so instead of being ambiguous and leaving themselves open to constant abuse?

      • Damon Horner

Rafa has set deadlines for when he’d like new signings. If it’s impossible I don’t think anybody told him!

  • hetonmag

It’s scandalous that a manager of Rafas stature has to go to the fat oaf with a begging bowl at yet another transfer window.

  • Cockneytrev

Ashley’a never had any intention of running a successful football club,,
HE has used the club very well as an advertising tool for his retail business, nothing more nothing less,,
Newcastle United is just another brand that he has devalued….

  • Rob

I predict no takeover, no signings and Rafa just keeping us in the league.

During the summer another club will take Rafa and we’ll end up with Mark Hughes or worse.

  • Peaky Magpie

No expectations at all,Ryder will be getting his Panini sticker book out shortly picking random names who we could sign.

  • Thefootballerwhocouldfly

Mitro Shelvey will probably be sold with our replacements Ivan Toney & Saviet stepping up. I will be there on Saturday but sadly have little hope for the future of the club under Ashley. If he remains owner I’ve had my fill after 50 years of support & vow not to go until he’s gone!

    • nufcslf

Sad that it has come to that for many fans. Cannot for the life of me see even any greedy reasons why fatso would want to carry on running the…his…club into the ground. The man is total scum and like most pathetic people like him are their own worst enemies fortunately. Time to go.

  • Down Under Mag

In truth we will probably look to offload a few players like Mitro and we will put some laughable offers in for replacements who will not be as good and we have no hope of getting anyway for what we offer and the window will close with us being no better off, if not worse and i’d be very surprised to see Rafa still here should that be the case, unless he has some behind closed doors reassurance the take over will still go ahead in the summer.
