Chelsea are formidable opposition, a £180m spend in the summer gives you some idea of the scale of the challenge this afternoon for Newcastle.
With well over half a billion spent in the previous five years on top of that, the figures add up to what is a massive financial advantage over Newcastle United’s spending under Mike Ashley.
Meanwhile the Magpies had a net spend of only £11.5m this summer despite the difficulties of being a promoted team, with around £35m going out in total.
However, since promotion back in 2010, Newcastle have done surprisingly well against their big spending opponents.
In 13 games starting in 2010, there have been three draws and five wins each, including a dramatic Shola Ameobi winner in a 4-3 Newcastle win in the League Cup at Stamford Bridge.
The problem for Newcastle in the stats though is that whilst they have three wins and two draws against Chelsea in six games at St James Park, it is a different story in London.
Since Papiss Cisse smashed those two brilliant goals back in May 2012, Newcastle have lost the last four games at Chelsea, conceding 12 goals and scoring only one.
Little consolation that it was Newcastle who last scored in matches between the two teams, Andros Townsend scoring a ‘consolation’ goal in the last minute of a 5-1 trouncing, a bizarre Steve McClaren going for a Rolando Aarons at left-back experiment…
