Rafa Benitez has stepped up the pressure on Mike Ashley.

The Newcastle boss obviously sick of what has happened with the two previous transfer windows.

Rather than wait until during or after a transfer window, the United manager has made clear when he needs signings to be made by, to give the club a viable chance of staying in the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez says ‘I have confidence that Mike Ashley will deliver what we need to stay in the Premier League before January 20, to be sure that we have time to work with the new players’.

Then he also adds ‘I have the belief and the confidence in Mike Ashley, that by January 15 or 20, we have to be there with everything done’.

The 15th January is in 24 days time and the 20th is in 29 days time, so the clock is most definitely ticking.

Rafa was said to be furious that signings he had lined up for the very start of the summer window were not progressed by the club, failure of Mike Ashley and his minions to do so this time will take us into dangerous waters surely…

The dates of the 15th and 20th of January are not plucked out of the air.

The 15th is two days after the third last Premier League match of January and then the 20th is the day when Newcastle are away at Manchester City, with additionally only the Burnley home game at 7.45pm on 31 January falling inside the transfer window, albeit by hours/minutes.

The reference to January 20 is the most important to my mind, referring no doubt to then leaving time for new signings to be then ready potentially for that Burnley home match.

After that Burnley match, there are only 12 more league matches to play and time is of the essence.

Rafa says ‘Am I confident we can get what we want?’ and then answers his own question…’In some cases yes, in some cases no’.

We are heading for four weeks of very interesting time as a Newcastle fan, let’s hope that finally Mike Ashley sees sense.

Rafa Benitez speaking on Friday, as related by The Mail:

“I have confidence that Mike Ashley will deliver what we need to stay in the Premier League before January 20, to be sure that we have time to work with the new players.

“I don’t know the budget that I have, so we don’t know how much we can spend…

“It will depend on the value of the players, the players who are available or not, and we may have to move players out to bring others in.

“It’s really important to do that.

“We haven’t received any offers for any of our players at this stage but we have to do things as quickly as possible.

“I have the belief and the confidence in Mike Ashley, that by January 15 or 20, we have to be there with everything done.

“Am I confident we can get what we want?

“In some cases yes, in some cases no.”

” …. let’s hope that finally Mike Ashley sees sense.” You were doing all right until you said that, Jackie!

    • TheNutJob

Ashley & sense go together like Leazes & BetVictor

  • Sid James

It`ll be the usual Carry On

  • Shipcote Willy

Groundhog Day. For January 2018 substitute August 2017 and you know what will happen

  • TheNutJob

If Rafa doesn`t stop working himself Fatty will kill bambi

  • toonterrier

If nowt happens it gives Rafa eleven days to pack his bags and find a new job. Come on fatty get the money out.

    • Soldier

i think Rafa will still be here in May, if the takeover doesn`t happen he`ll leave & drop the whole situation on Ashley`s toe`s no matter what league we are in

      • Leazes Ender

The takeover will happen…. I’ve changed my mind after doing some research….. its just ‘when’ not ‘if’….

        • HarryHype59

Unless the Fat one agrees to PCPs demand for a relegation clause, I doubt the deal will proceed this season! It doesn’t make sense for PCP!

          • TheNutJob

the fat one requires a certain amount & won`t sell for less

        • TheNutJob

hedging your bets there, when is this year or 10 yrs

        • Taz

Eventually!!! But will it be to late🤔🔫

      • hetonmag

Takes time but you can talk some sense.

        • Oooh bobbi fleckman

I was thinking the very same.

  • Soldier

can`t see Ashley changing after 10 years, he may supply some money but it won`t be his. it will be what Newcastle have on the books

  • Leazes Ender

Has everyone given up on the takeover then?

    • HarryHype59

    • Jezza

I haven’t given up on it because I knew from day one that it was never going to happen.

      • Leazes Ender

Tis going to happen, you’ll be pleased to know.

    • Taz

      Did anyone ever believe it😞

    • Coach Clagnut

      Nahhh…..fatty’s just prolonging the inevitable.
Neymar’s fee gave him a caniption.
There’s a lot of shyte flying his way what with one thing & another. He’s just lost north of 80 mill in a bet on a share price, taxman cometh, his tat emporium faltering, etc..etc.
Just a matter of time. The club’s always been for sale. Always on a whim and at a price. One time as low as 100 million. Some bloke raised the capital but fatty claimed the bloke didn’t have the requisite pie count to push it on.
In football, he’s a busted flush.

  • Mitros gotta start

Seeing as though we are only allowed 2 loan signings from the premier league do you think its wise to waste 1 of them on kenedy?
I think 2 strikers should be top of the list before we get a left winger.

    • TheNutJob

that`s bad news i thought you were allowed 3

  • TheNutJob

    2-1 Newcastle

    • Taz

      Lets hope ya reet

  • TheNutJob

we`ll wake up on Christmas day & sky sports will report that Mike Ashley has sold Newcastle Utd & he wanted to make the announcement today as a present to all the fans who have stood by the club

    • grantham mag

And he dies on boxing day.

    • nufcslf

Brilliant. I love a a good feel story.

  • Taz

Unfortunately the fat mo go will do what he has always done. He wont listen to any one that knows about the beautiful game, he will only listen to his fat ar$ed self and do fk all about it. The bloke is a fat lying tow rag(that’s a bit of cloth that sailors used to wipe their behinds with, before toilet paper) I personally despise the FCW

  • Mitros gotta start

Doesnt sound good….rafa claims he was on a conference call with fatty this week yet is in the paper 3 days later begging him to do the right thing in the transfer market….mustn’t have been told anything good when he talked to him directly then

  • TheFatController

If I was being overly optimistic, the fact that Rafa has given a date and is calling it out (which, if you imagine, is him dictating terms to his employer, not the smartest move in most professions, even football) suggests either:-
    – He knows that’s a significant date for any successful takeover deal
    – he knows the takeover is imminent and thus doesn’t give a monkey’s as he knows Ashley can’t sack him as Staveley wants him in place, so is calling Ashley out

Sadly, my pessimistic side also suggests ‘maybe he wants out and thus is antagonising Ashley to trigger a sacking and the payoff …’

  • hetonmag

That’s the way to put the ball back in the fat lads court by the Messiah.

  • robbersdog

Rafa also believes that Father Christmas is a real person.

    • HappyToons

So Santa is Mike Ashley, Ho,Ho,…ohhhhhhhhh.

No wonder I got nowt as he never turned up at mine for the last 10 years.

      • Damon Horner

Can’t be true. If Santa gets stuck in the chimney Ashley has no chance!

  • ghostrider

I think Rafa’s finding it hard to deal with quality identification at affordable prices for a club like ours, as it stands… and has stood for long enough in terms of working from within.
I don’t know how much he’s expecting or how much he’ll be happy with but let’s hope he’s got some gems up his sleeve with what he does deal with.

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

We had the chance of bringing in a certain Celtic CB a couple of years ago when we needed to strengthen the defence. Now he’s £75m !

  • fistsofsteel2

After Benitez bought, and insists on playing, the abysmal Joselu I wouldn’t trust him with money again.
All Rafa deserves is the sack. After such a dreadful run of games any other manager would be gone. His tactics, team selections, and substitutions are absolutely awful. It is his fault Newcastle are in the bottom three.

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

Benitez had very little choice. Joselu was a gamble yes, but in buying a striker for £5m – which was all the funds made available by Ashley, (and given his subsequent public comments on the costs of buying strikers that a £10m striker could at least kick the ball forwards etc.,) he showed up the owner as a liar. Name me a better manager or one with an equivalent career record who would be committed to the club and might be prepared to come to the Toon ?

      • Leazes Ender

The fans were told by the Chronicle that ‘Benitez was in sole control of transfers’….. they insisted he was….. forward with the Rafalution and all of that.

…. someone is telling lies….. maybe they all are!
