Paul Merson says ‘unlucky’ Newcastle facing more misery

Paul Merson actually thought Newcastle played well at The Emirates.

Arsenal may have been the better team overall but were lucky to get away with a 1-0 win in the end, as United had late chances to get a draw.

For Paul Merson though, he thinks ‘unlucky’ Newcastle will not see things improve in the near future.

Before taking on Manchester City on Wednesday, Rafa’s team travel to West Ham and Merson says ‘David Moyes is doing a great job’.

With plenty of investment in the team, including Hart, Arnautovic, Zabaleta and Hernandez in the summer, the expectations were that the Hammers would be doing far better than they had.

Moyes has picked up eight points in seven Premier League matches since taking over, although seven of those points did come in the last three matches against Chelsea, Arsenal and Stoke.

After a decent match against Arsenal, Paul Merson asks why Newcastle can’t do it ‘against clubs lower down the league?’.

Marko Arnautovic cost over £20m in the summer but had been very disappointing, only to be a key figure in this recent upturn, scoring the winner against Chelsea and another goal in the 3-0 win over his old club Stoke.

Merson thinks Newcastle won’t be able to handle the Austrian attacking player…

The return of Jamaal Lascelles to the defence has made it look a lot tighter and in only one of the 12 matches he has started, have Newcastle conceded more than one goal, whilst the five matches he played no part in have seen 15 goals leaked.

If Newcastle only concede one at the most, surely they can find at least one goal against a West Ham team that still isn’t great.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“Newcastle put in a good performance against Arsenal and were unlucky.

“You look at games like that and think ‘if you can play like that against Arsenal, why not against clubs lower down the league?’

“You have to do it week-in-week-out, against teams around you.

West Ham are playing really well.

“They were outstanding against Stoke.

“I am not sure Newcastle will be able to handle Marko Arnautovic.

“David Moyes is doing a great job.

“Prediction is West Ham 2 Newcastle 0.”
