Paul Merson has been talking ahead of the Arsenal v Newcastle match on Saturday.

Fan and former player, Merson saw his team beat Tottenham, Burnley and Huddersfield in the final three games in November, scoring eight goals without reply.

Then in December though, they started off by battering Manchester United only to lose 3-1 at home, followed by two away draws at Southampton and West Ham.

Such is the sense of entitlement for the likes of Paul Merson, that he now calls it ’embarrassing’ because Arsenal are now below unfashionable Burnley.

Why is it embarrassing? In actual fact, Arsenal may be seventh at the minute but they are actually only one point off the Champions League places.

Oh to be ’embarrassing’.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have taken just one point from their last twenty four and Merson declares ‘If they could have handpicked any team to play it would be Newcastle, who have completely gone’.

Newcastle’s worst defeat this season was 4-1 at Old Trafford but this time he predicts the Magpies to go one better and lose 4-0 on Saturday.

Paul Merson bemoans the fact Arsenal haven’t done better away from home, winning two, drawing three and losing four.

Not wanting to worry anyone but if you leave aside that battering they gave Man Utd for no reward, Arsenal have won all their other seven home Premier League games and scored 20 goals with only four conceded.

If Newcastle repeat the clown-like defending we have seen recently, Rafa’s players may give a whole new meaning to the word ’embarrassing’ on Saturday.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“Nothing has changed at Arsenal.

“We are 17 games into the season and they are below Burnley.

“That is embarrassing.

“You can understand after five or six games, if someone gets off to a flying start, but this is 17 games in.

“I don’t know where Arsenal are going.

“I have said before that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil will probably stay but now I think they have to go because they are doing nothing.

“Still, I expect them to win this game.

“If they could have handpicked any team to play it would be Newcastle, who have completely gone.

“Why have Arsenal done well at home and not away? Because it’s easier to play at home. You have a lot of the ball and teams come and play a different way.

“The teams that win trophies go away from home and stand up and win games.

“Prediction is Arsenal 4 Newcastle 0.”

He`s most likely correct on the 0 for Newcastle, i`m not so sure on Arsenal`s score.
i`ve just been reading various rumours on the transfer budget which amounts to £30m including wages, if that`s the case we`re down.

    • HarryHype59

Still don’t get why Stavely is allegedly going to pay £300m, for a club likely to be back in the second tier next season!

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

It`s not a done deal yet,
i bet Fatso hopes the contract is signed before Saturday

      • Down Under Mag

There’s talk of some kind of relegation clause still being in place. Given these leaks aren’t exactly official i’d take most of what you read with a pinch of salt. No owner, current or future, will disclose transfer budget because as soon as you do that the prices all go skyrocketing and January will be bad enough given clubs know we are desperate. I suspect a few loan deals will be more likely than permanent signings.

A warning for any youngsters reading this, take a long hard look at that photo above and realise that’s what drinking copious amounts and snorting to excess turns you into.Ask yourself,is it really worth it ???? He’s probably near enough right with the score mind you although Arsenal aren’t nearly half as good as he thinks they are.

  • TheFatController

I’ve been a buyer for 25 years, and I’ve never known any fellow buyer let any seller or market know what they have got to spend.

In fact, they spend all their time downplaying how much they have to spend and bigging up all their other options other than the one the the seller is offering.

I’m sure you’ll agree that’s not rocket science. You don’t go to buy a £10k second hand car car and show the seller you have £15k in your wallet…and then negotiate for £5k.

Hopefully it’s becoming obvious that I’m suggesting ‘why the Flying fk would PCP give anyone but themselves knowledge of how much we’ll have In the pot in Jan…?’

They say “Rafa remained tight lipped” – wow, he didn’t say he had loads “so name your price …..” ?

Remember when Ashley sold Carroll for £35m – what did he say? ‘We all knew they had £50m from Torres’ sale and needed to replace him. And had hours to do so..’

    KERCHING !

And should PCP come out and say it’s £30m, it might just, incredibly, be that they actually have a lot more. How cheeky can you be?

    • TheNutJob

Or the figures been leaked because the ronnies already touting £20m players which is fantasy when it comes to Nufc

      • TheFatController

Well, depends whether PCP are the same people that kept trying to buy Liverpool I guess …

But who’s leaking the figures? I doubt anyone knows the figure yet, but if there is a leak it’ll be a controlled leak to mislead the market

They certainly won’t give a monkeys’ what the Chron is publishing.

If Staveley speaks, she’ll trot out what every owner and manager trots out ‘obviously we have a budget but we’re not at liberty to discuss it (can’t possibly think why?) …’

What’s this??? yet another article devoted to Paul Merson? Ah of course Paul Merson that ex player who has always been held in such high regard by Newcastle fans. We are Collectively all hanging on his every word so this article is a real scoop. This kind of article is where the mag really excels because we all care deeply about
Mersons comments, analysis and predictions about our club… you know because of his long association with the Geordies. Please do be sure to keep us right up to date with any other comments from him because I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking – when I want a great insiders perspective on our club Newcastle United the first person who always jumps to my mind is Paul Merson.
