Newcastle have ‘watched Dominick Drexler several times’ ahead of possible January bid – Report
Thursday brings reports from Germany that Newcastle United are interested in buying Dominick Drexler.
German publication Kicker have carried the story about claimed Newcastle interest in the 27 year old German playmaker/number 10.
He has scored 10 goals in 18 appearances this season and his impressive form has caught the eye of other clubs as well as Newcastle, with Kicker reporting that both Aston Villa and Cardiff have also been tracking the player.
It would be some story though if Newcastle did follow up this claimed interest and brought him to the Premier League.
Kicker say that Newcastle have ‘watched Dominick Drexler several times’ this season but those games have been in the German second tier.
He has helped Holstein Kiel to the top of Bundesliga 2 this season and this follows promotion last season from the third tier of German football.
Drexler only signed for Holstein Kiel in summer 2016 from another third tier club, Aalen.
In fact he has played all his first team football below the Bundesliga, having started off with Bayer Leverkusen but never making it into their first team.
As well as his 10 goals in 18 games (all competitions), the playmaker also has six assists.
Obviously Newcastle are crying out for better quality in the number 10 position but difficult to see somebody with the German’s overall profile, coming straight into the Premier League and doing a job.
Still, attacking midfielders who can score and create goals are invaluable, so maybe somebody will take a chance on the player.
Drexler is under contract until summer 2019 and obviously Holstein Kiel will be desperate to keep their star player as they attempt the remarkable feat of going from the German third tier to the Bundesliga in only two seasons.
Newcastle fans are nervously waiting to see what, if anything, happens with a takeover.
This will seemingly dictate exactly what level Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez are shopping at in January.
