The bookies have made Newcastle favourites to sign Islam Slimani, after newspaper reports yesterday saying that both NUFC and West Brom wanted to take him in January.

Islam Slimani scored a decent seven Premier League goals last season, considering he only had 13 starts (and another 10 from the bench). Plus he scored the winner against Porto in the Champions League, starting three games in that competition and on as a sub in another two.

This season though, the Algerian international has only played 117 Premier League minutes, including a single start, not getting on the scoresheet yet,

Sporting Lisbon picked up 30m euros as Leicester were desperate to splash the cash after winning the Premier League and having Champions League football to look forward to.

The striker turns 30 in June and hasn’t even got on the bench in Premier League matches since November.

Despite having scored four goals in three previous League Cup matches this season, Slimani didn’t even make the bench last night as Leicester lost in the quarter-finals to Man City.

Clearly he has no future with the Foxes but what do Leicester fans think about him? Does he sound the right man for Newcastle?

Here are comments on the striker from the top Leicester fans message board Foxes Talk:

‘Get rid. Toxic waste of space.

Glad Puel seems to be taking decisive action in binning him.’

‘Yeah time to cash in whilst we can still get some sort of decent return. Not convinced he’ll score many goals for another PL club, missed some absolute sitters for us.

I know the Algerian contingent will come back with his amazing goals to game ratio and that nobody gets a chance because Vardy’s the favourite blah blah blah.’

‘As I’ve consistently said, the bloke is a bad apple – constantly moaning and think he’s big time.

Puel gave him a chance but after the West Ham game where he came on throwing his arms around and gave a free kick away, he decided he’d had enough.

He shall not be missed.’

‘Slim was alright last season and really the only one of the 2016 signings to make any half-decent impact.

The start against Bournemouth back in May though was the game that might have confirmed that it just wasn’t goin to work out long term. Albrighton and Vardy were arguing with him during the game and he missed a good few chances.

Would still view him as a good signing for someone else. He’d be the main man for a team in the bottom half of the league.’

‘Puel: “Slimani provides the same option as Ulloa who has worked hard in training sessions. I think Slimani is also working very well in training now. But it is always difficult for me to make assurances with so much competition between the players. I cannot say yet what will happen in the transfer window but it is difficult for me and the staff to manage all these players for the same position.”

Sounds as if Claude thought he lacked commitment at first.

His other comments suggest that he’s inclined to sell.’

‘I certainly wouldn’t express a negative view on Slimani’s attitude myself. When he’s been on the pitch, he has generally looked very committed to me – and I don’t see him in training.

If Puel is not even convinced that he’s going to use Slimani from the bench, I cannot see the point in keeping him. To me, he seems like a good striker – just the wrong sort of striker for the way we play.

It’s probably unfair to him to keep him, if so – and selling him could generate a half-decent sum towards an inbound signing.’

‘He just isn’t very good.

He can’t control a football properly. He can barely pass and even looks uncomfortable just running. Ulloa can hold up play and bring others into the game. The ball just bounces off of Slim.’

‘That’ll be why he had the best assists, goals, chances created and key passes ratio out of all our strikers last year.

He has an incredibly inconsistent touch, and sometimes when his control is bad, it’s REALLY bad. But I’m sorry, you don’t get those ratios if you can’t control the ball at all. It’s an overreaction to some poor moments of control.’

‘No one noticed him storming off the pitch at the end of the league matches in which he did play this season without shaking anyone’s hand or clapping the supporters?

Or the fact that he’s stuck out like a sore thumb for throwing his arms up in the air and shouting at team mates in a team that is generally supportive of each other even when mistakes are made?

And now Puel’s come in and, despite seemingly having been willing to give him a chance at first, is now talking about Ulloa’s attitude/hard work in comparison?

The clues are all there that the guy is pretty toxic around the place because he has the hump that he’s not been playing.’

‘He will score goals at this level if he’s given the chance in a side that sets up for him (4-3-3 with direct wingers).’

‘We spent the best part of £30m on Slimani and for one reason or another he’s failed here. To be able to make a mistake in the transfer market and to be not fully punished for it is a great thing especially when that player will be 30 in six months.’

‘It seems slims told his people to talk to the club about a quick out. This could turn out ugly if we hold out for a price.’

‘I assume we have left slim twiddling his fingers out of match day squads to show him we aren’t bothered about leaving him in limbo.’

  • Leicester Mag

Interesting views. I’ve lived in Leicester for last 20 years, know a lot of fans and most have a reasonable opinion. Not worth £30M but never picked up on any of this toxic guff.

    • Andynufc

It’s a tactic commonly used by The Mag. They’ll search for the most negative comments and make it out like that’s what the majority of fans think.

      • Megatron1505

A bit like some of the fans who post their toxic anti Benítez stuff here, making out it’s a majority opinion.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    Sounds like an Algerian Hoss

    • robbersdog

Actually, Hoss tries hard, he just isn’t very good.

    • Leazes Ender

      Injury prone donkey.

  • mentalman

there’s no point us going for him if there’s questions being raised over his commitment in training

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

Islam Slimani is nothing but one of Mike Ashley’s red herrings that get put out there by himself or his stooges.
How many times have we been linked with him now ?, Probably the same amount as Arda Turan which was another of Ashley’s P.R Team names that have been bandied about around window time or especially season ticket renewals time !

    Complete rubbish !

  • NUFCDan

He’s a decent player but has the same problem as Mitro has here, questionable attitude and his style of play doesn’t suit.

  • HappyToons

His name will be sung to the RAFA BEN-ITEZ song ‘Islam Slimani…Islam Slimani…ISLAM SLIM-ANI.

There’s only one Islam Slimani! That must be true.

Where’s the Leazes End Choir Masters these days as there is hardly an original chant. Please not any more to the tune of yellow submarine. Least his name doesn’t fit that!

    • Dillon Tovak

      Hopefully not as he’s rubbish.

      • Leazes Ender

        he is.

  • Leazes Ender

As soon as this came upon Newsnow I looked for the player on Transfermarkt to check his record because the Chronicle won’t do it….

An absolute joke! Hadn’t had even half a game for a year.

At the same time as filling their pages with this cr*p they’re mounting a public vote weighted against Shelvey!

If you want any more evidence that the Chronicle try and do as much harm to the club as possible look no further…. bloody disgrace the lot of them.

Sling your hook Ryder you scumbag.

    • TheNutJob

Sporting paid £270,000 for him & flogged him for £30m
      😂😂

      • Leazes Ender

        Someone had their fingers burnt.

        • TheNutJob

we`ll dodge the bullet Watford`s in for him, add to that he`s on 80,000 a week

          • Leazes Ender

Staveley will be having a heart attack….. or is it Ashley…. hang on who is signing the check?

        • Geordiegiants

          Yeah Tottenham.

    • Clarko

But he’s valued at £22.50m, he will increase our squad value by 15%, it would position us at 12th in the squad value table. That’s all what matters, right?

      • TheNutJob

we are not buying him, so he isn`t an asset

        • Clarko

          1) I was joking and 2) I never said we were buying him.

          • Leazes Ender

What was his value before it was gazumped by Leicester?

          • Clarko

Doesn’t matter, they are all made up.

          • Leazes Ender

            What joke?

          • Clarko

            Dummy.

          • Geordiegiants

Go on Clarko get him told, give him the warhammer. ⚒

          • Tomb

Our squad is valued at 16th in the league but rafa fans think if it wasn’t for rafa we would have 0 points this season.

          • Clarko

Never use that squad value table or value, it’s not accurate or representative, but yes, many fans do refuse to criticise Benitez and believe he can do no wrong, it’s just incredibly silly.

          • Paul Smith

Because we know the next person wont be nearly as qualified and criticising does nothing to help the situation or the results on the pitch. People calling for a manager change are pathetic.. Same thing happened to Bobby Robson. Newcastle fans like to pretend that never happened…. it did happen and it probably helped get him the sack. Good job on that btw.

We might get a quick improvement in results with a change in manager but it’s not in the best interests of the club in the long term.

I get tired of hearing how Newcastle fans are the best in the country… The only thing they are best at is showing up. In the 25-30 years of following this club i’ve seen no evidence whatsoever that our fan base is more supportive of its players or managers than many other clubs. Our fan base is fickle just like everybody elses.

          • Clarko

“Criticising does nothing to help the situation or the results”, and ignorance does?

“People calling for a manager change are pathetic”, and those people are not me, so this is irrelevant. On a side note, I’ve never seen any serious comments about people wanting rid of Benitez.

“Same thing happened to Bobby Robson. Newcastle fans like to pretend that never happened…. it did happen and it probably helped get him the sack. Good job on that btw”. Again, very irrelevant.

“We might get a quick improvement in results with a change in manager but it’s not in the best interests of the club in the long term”. Again, nobody in this conversation has said anything about Benitez being sacked.

I don’t know why you are replying to me. Waste of time.

          • Geordiegiants

Ours is worse than any i have ever come across. I would say we are ten times worse than Arsenal’s and Manure put together, and those 2!are shocking.

  • Kev-82

Sounds like they rate him as highly as we rate Hoss.

  • Lhc

Ne thanks, a don’t fancy anyone called Islam playing for nufc

    • Benmagpie

Why not? We’ve had muslims play for us before. Newcastle United is black and white and all flavors in between. The reason for not buying him would be coz he’s no better than what we have, not because of his name.

      • Lhc

Plenty more fish in the sea like me, never make assumptions though Ben.

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

sounds like you fancy racism and islamaphobia though (and bleating on about how there are MORE islamaphobic idiots out there is NOT helping you)

  • Peaky Magpie

Think I’ll listen to a Rafa’s pre & post match conferences now from Arsenal match again as nowt’ll change and it’ll save me a job for Saturday afore I gan on the lash in Buxton.Verbal copy & paste.

  • The Vicar

    A huge downgrade from Mitrovich.

  • Alreet

Sounds like on par with Hoss. No thanks. Danny Ings on loan and test chelsea for Batshuayi again. He doesnt get a game atm coz morata and hazard are doin the biz.

We have to go for 2 strikers and a no. 10 i this window or we are knackered.

  • Whitehurst

We need to sign Bristol City’s LB Joe Bryan….who’s been on our radar. Better cheaper option than Luke Shaw!!! Get it done!!

  • Whitehurst

….and obviously a striker as well!!

  • Geordiegiants

Those comments sound just like the stoke fans when we signed the mighty Hoss.

  • Mitros gotta start

On another note…if kenedy is on his way on loan that means no batsushayi or luiz

  • Mike

    more tripe

  • Stephen Paylor

No thanks, Danny Ings better or Batshuyai even better,

    ABOUBAKAR would be great!
