Newcastle interested in January signing of Dimitri Oberlin – Report
Monday morning sees claims that Newcastle United are in ‘pole position’ to sign Dimitri Oberlin in January.
The striker is said to be rated at £20m even though the 20 year old has played relatively little football so far in his career.
After playing for various clubs in Austria, including loan spells, Dimitri Oberlin moved on loan from Salzburg to FC Basel this summer.
The striker has only started six league games in Switzerland so far and has been used more as an impact sub, scoring three goals.
However, in the Champions League he has suggested he could be a very promising striker, scoring four goals in four starts (plus two off the bench) and helping Basel to qualify for the knockout stages.
He didn’t score in the game but Oberlin played in the match where the Swiss side beat Manchester United 1-0.
Obviously Newcastle are being linked with a lot of players and how much substance there is in this particular transfer story from The Sun remains to be seen.
Rafa Benitez is desperate for better quality going forward and every club is always looking for the next goalscorer who will come through.
Dimitri Oberlin is at FC Basel on a loan deal with an option to buy so you would imagine any deal with another club would be dependent on whether they have longer term interest in the forward.
