Newcastle 0 Everton 1 – Wednesday 13 December 2017 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Now no wins in seven and one point from the last 21:

Ben Cooper:

“I don’t think there was much more we could have done except perhaps score goals and not gift the opposition one.

“This wasn’t like Saturday, we were not beaten by a better team, we just gave a rubbish goal away and then didn’t have a lot of luck afterwards.

“The goal did completely sum up our recent defending though. All of them at fault and all of them at sea.

“Apart from that, generally I can’t fault the effort or the basic level of play or the game itself, which was another entertaining game.

“It’s points we need now though. 40 of them.”

Toon Bano:

“Takeover news is great but our manager must start picking up points before January.

“Darlow had to have been dropped given his previous mistakes.

“Diame should never be in contention to start, ever.

“No Mitro in the squad is madness.

“Relegation a genuine fear with or without takeover.”

Nat Seaton:

“A shocking performance from a relegation looking team.

“No confidence, no ideas and beaten at home yet again, this time by a pretty poor Everton team.

“It is going to be a long hard struggle without things changing at the club.

“Please let the changes happen sooner rather than later…”

Anthony Stafford:

“Beaten by a drab everton.

Karl butter fingers Darlow letting pensioner worrier Rooney tap in.

“It is bloody miserable, no wonder Ashley is selling up, he can see the writing on the wall…the writing he wrote.

“Sinking further down the league, what the hell does Staveley see, because the backsidee has dropped out of this bunch.

“They haven’t the foggiest and if it was anyone bar Benitez he would be sacked – because this is beyond relegation form.”

Paul Lyon:

“The lads are playing with such low confidence at the moment, we really needed those shots that hit posts at the Gallowgate End to go in.

“After they scored it became the Sam Allardyce show, not helped by our unwillingness to have a go.

“Instead players were checking back to pass square & backwards, bar a few runs from Yedlin.

“January’s promises can’t come quick enough, hopefully our position at the bottom is retrievable.”

David Punton:

“Everton managed by Allardyce – it had defeat written all over it, and that’s what we got.

“It’s 1 point from a possible 24 now.

“It’s an abysmal run and Newcastle fans are left wondering where the hell the next win is going to come from.

“Hitting the woodwork twice tonight but ultimately not finding a way through to goal.

“Then the rank stupidity of Shelvey adds to the suffering.

“The season is turning into a nightmare.”

Paul Patterson:

“Championship v Premiership.

“Simple as that.”

Surprisingly positive. 15 points from 17,by the time we’ve played 20,I’d be amazed if we had anymore than the 15. 40 points is always the golden points total, genuinely don’t see us getting anywhere near that with or without investment,it’ll be a very long time before we make it to 30,if at all. It’s sad but we are nowhere near good enough for this league.

    • Kneebotherm8

Great forward planning by Ashley again,he’s fckd about and pssd about in the close season with signings and we are where we are thanks to that prk,all this blaming Benitez is missing the big picture at the club.

      • nufcslf

Some of his decision making is baffling, but he deserves a chance with a proper owner that cares about football. Hope its not too late, but put 2 or 3 wins together and it all changes for the better. We shall see.

    • Kneebotherm8

Everyone, except the owner, knew that before the season started.

  • HarryHype59

This team is worse than the one that got relegated in 2016! Do we actually have one EPL standard player at this club?

    • Blackburn1066

      No

  • Monkseaton Magpies

We were the far better team all game against a very poor side hitting the inside of the post twice with their only real chance a gift from our keeper. Four nil to us would have been a fair score but I wonder why Rafa started the match with ten men against eleven very strange.

    • HarryHype59

Strange how every team gets lucky against us! Relegation is highly likely again, regardless of the take over!

      • Blackburn1066

No,No, they are not lucky we are rubbish!

      • Monkseaton Magpies

It is strange but it’s happening every week one mistake tonight one goal and we hit the inside of the post twice with great strikes and the ball comes out plus miss a host of chances we are a far better team than Everton who are tenth and not much different to Burnley it’s just the way the games are going.

        • HarryHype59

When a team is struggling Lady Luck can be harsh! It was rotten luck to hit the woodwork twice! Darlow’s error was a shocker!

          • Monkseaton Magpies

Heard on the grapevine Elliott is carrying an injury that’s why he was not playing. While this is the worst run of luck I have encountered watching them every thing is going against us sendings off sixteen in a row since an opposition player sent off, penalties, injuries everything going wrong. At the start of the season when things were settled we did well. Rafa is right in this league one mistake and game over if you do not score.

    • Blackburn1066

We are not the better team we got beat 1-0 by a poor team so where does that put us?

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Not many times when two strikes hit the inside of the post and come out and we had several other chances they scored only because Darlow dropped the ball we were streets a head of them it was down to back luck and players two players who are not up to standard.

      • Kneebotherm8

It’s results that count, not performances, but it was an improved performance by the team.

  • anyobrien

Thought we did OK tonight rubbish keeping and no luck… Seen it all before tbh

    • Blackburn1066

We got beat 1-0 that’s ok? Sad!

      • anyobrien

        Did you see the game…?
Your obviously trying to be a clever shyte…..

  • Phil Yare

this is the thing that annoys me about rafa, he obviously feels he has to change something because we are awful
why change the goalkeeper??? what on earth had elliott done wrong?
how about partnering gayle AND mitrovic?! oh no we can’t do that because that might not work so lets keep rotating diame, perez and joselu….the most lethal strikeforce in the world! next game i expect him to drop gayle and play joselu on his own. = nil points again

AND as wouldnt we be better off with clark at leftback than that useless ex mackem spaniard?? then mbemba can play alongside lascelles – again lets not bother doing that as lejeune and manquillo are world class

    pardew in disguise

    • Down Under Mag

Literally just wrote about the weird choices. I dont get why he waits until Joselu actually scores (and might have some confidence) to drop him?? Elliot is a better keeper than Darlow, maybe its to do with wanting to ensure he gets to buy a keeper in January. I don’t get what we have to lose (other than Rafa admitting he is wrong) to just try Mitro and Gayle…it’s not like we are on a scoring streak anyway. Again, Mbemba has shown himself to be a good player when called upon and is probably a better option at LB at the minute. Some very strange decisions…great when it works out but right now he needs to justify the lunacy when we can’t win and don’t look like winning…

    • Blackburn1066

We have become a club that will put up with dross! We no longer turn up to see a great team and to win games we just pay our money to some fat Tw-t and go home.

      • Phil Yare

basically when you really think about it…the venue and occasion is just a sportsdirect fest and the football team comes second to that, it just a mass marketing event for his c**p shop hence the minimal investment on the pitch

    • Salty

Yes, we keep looking at left back so why on earth did we sign Gamez who is the only left back in the squad other than Dummy and has never been seen?

      • Phil Yare

gamez is another one in the ‘ why did we sign them list?’ ….selz, hanley etc

  • Down Under Mag

Plenty of attempts, 4 shots on target and no goals. Says it all really. Jonjo clearly wanting an extended Xmas break. We actually played well but seemed to run out of ideas towards the 3/4 mark of the game and just lack that cutting edge. Aarons didn’t really get much of the ball to affect the game and I suspect the first port of call by Rafa in January is for a new ‘keeper… I like Darlow but he’s made a few mistakes as did Elliot before him. Just need some experience injected into the side if not the quality we need – we aren’t going to get a lot for our cash in January takeover or not, we just need to buy smart and I think I am beginning to see why Rafa is obsessing on a goalkeeper, but hopefully we can swing a deal for a midfielder and a proven striker as well, if only on loan.

Rafa though is confusing me though. He sticks with Joselu through thick and thin and then the moment the lad scores a goal he gets sat on the bench the next game. I just don’t get that logic. Murphy has been showing promise and doesn’t get a game. Still no Mitrovic but Shelvey gets a game when the only reason he could have been left out recently is for the exact flaws that see Mitro left out. Hopefully something clicks soon while we are still marginally above the drop zone.

    • Leazes Ender

Shelvey….well thats absolute frustration showing….. kept passing the ball and they give it to him back!…. DO SOMETHING WITH IT!

Lets do what we always do and ship out our best players huh!

      • Down Under Mag

He got no support tonight that’s for sure, I did cringe when those short passes to someone next to a player were then passed straight back, but there was no movement off the ball up field for them.

All I was making a point was that Shelvey can be a liability BUT gets a game, so why is Mitro still out of the side. Shelvey can be lazy off the ball and doesn’t always track back, so if that is the case for why Mitro isn’t being played then why is Shelvey. They can both provide something but lack in other areas and yet we are crying out for something new up front. I just don’t get it. Certainly wasn’t saying we should offload Shelvey, I was one asking the question why he was dropped int he first place.

    • Blackburn1066

      So we are rubbish

  • Mitros gotta start

Rafa hasnt got a clue..new owners new manager for me….rafa has proved he couldnt spot a footballer if his life depended on it…..silva or howe would get us playing football we all want to watch….negative rafa will get us relegated….any other manager would be run out of town with a 1 point in 24 record….sick of listening to his individual errors cost us excuses!

    • Down Under Mag

Getting that way, looking at the lift West Ham, Everton and Palace have had by changing their manager i’m surprised there hasn’t been more talk of replacing Rafa. I think he is still the way forward, he’s just working with rubbish and clearly struggling to find something that works with the dross on offer. Pep is romping the league but he has the players…Rafa is working with a Championship side.

      • Mitros gotta start

Yes but a good manager can get the best out of the players he has at his disposal….rafa keeps telling everybody that they are all rubbish and need changing…hardly inspires confidence and wants to make you play for him does it?

      • S.G.M.

Rubbish? isn’t this the squad he put together to get us out of the Championship?

        • Down Under Mag

He built a side to do a job to get out of the Championship yes, but that squad hasn’t been added to with PREMIERSHIP quality. Apart from Murphy we spent very little…basically Championship prices…and we got Championship quality. We also haven’t got the depth to cope with this league and it is starting to show. You can’t carry players like we could last season in Rafas rotation policy.

    • anyobrien

Relastically who do you want and who would come

      • Leazes Ender

The team selection is nuts at the minute, I’m hoping its because players are about to be shipped out as we have a full squad….

I really, really, hope that’s the reason….. and Rafa hasn’t gone mad.

      • Kneebotherm8

You wouldn’t want Pulis, but he’d be more than happy to manage this club.

      • Mitros gotta start

If the takeover goes through and there is a decent transfer budget we can have our pick of managers….we need someone in that is gonna play the decent attacking football we all want to see….howe or silva look like decent young managers that put out teams that play nice football….we could start there

        • anyobrien

IF the biggest word in football

      • S.G.M.

Anyone unemployed would come, and we wont get a say.

    • Kneebotherm8

Well it was an individual error that cost us,I don’t need him to tell me that.
Karl Darlow made a balls up of what should have been a tuppence ha’penny save.

    • Michael Pattison

You can’t judge any manager under Ashley – they are all doomed to fail !!!

    • Geordiegiants

You really think any of those two would come here? You are as deluded in that, with as much as you are Mitro would make any difference.

      • TheFatController

They tell me Mbemba would make a difference.

The Mbemba who when dealing with a £70m striker behind him 6 yards out, decides the best option, rather than using all his power to make the header difficult, is to be off balance and brushed aside allowing a free header?

Based on that decision making, would he even stop Joselu scoring ..?

      • Mitros gotta start

After the takeover goes through we will have no problem finding good managers that want to come here

        • Damon Horner

They’ll want to see proof of ambition. Man City stuck with Hughes, why? Apparently they could have attracted anybody.

        • Geordiegiants

Which universe are you living in?

    • TheFatController

      Eddie Howe?

Oct 2017 – Bournemouth 7 defeats in first 10 PL games
Feb 2017 – one win in 8 PL games

He is a great manager, but unlike you, the Bournemouth owners are aware that a dip in form will inevitably happen in the PL unless you spend big.

I wonder if their fans ignore all his good work and moan like little spoilt children when far more expensively- assembled teams turn up and luckily do them over in games they actually deserved to win….?

      • Mitros gotta start

1 point out of 24 and his motivation to the poor squad he has is to tell anybody that will listen they are all useless and woukd be all gone if he had more thsn £5 to spend…..wonder why they wont perform for him?

        • Kneebotherm8

They performed for him last night but were just unlucky at the end of the day.
Watching that game,if I didn’t know any better, then I’d have thought Newcastle were the ones that had spent mega millions pre season, not Everton.

      • Jezza

Eddie Howe is a promising coach but he is years away from being ready for the challenges and pressure of managing Newcastle United. He wouldn’t touch the job with a bargepole anyway. He’s on a very good thing t Bournemouth and he’s not going to throw it away to come to this madhouse.

    • Jezza

Do you really think there is the slightest possibility that Silva would come to this shambles of a club when he’s already turned down a far better job at Everton?

      • Mitros gotta start

With new owners and lots of money to spend……yes

        • Jezza

          You are dreaming.

  • GlasgowMag

struggling with this one is this just bad luck Everton 1 shot on target all night and scored but on another night could of been 3/4 nil toon ok guys read your posts below you want to replace rafa who is the answer then answers on a post card!!!

    • Leazes Ender

You didn’t notice a difference in quality, a team who played on Sunday, away from home, who hadn’t won away in 17 games?

Ashley isn’t the only one who looks to be throwing in the towel.

      • GlasgowMag

Everton have spent lot of money this season and basically i could not not see any differance between the teams. Darlow was at fault for the goal mabye thats why rafa was making a big issue about having a new keeper at the start of the season basically we should of won that game on the performance tonight but I get your point about teams coming to our place after not getting results prevously but as I said before if you want to replace rafa who is the answer????

        • theoriginalbomberman

Then why did he treat Tim Krul like dog poo if there was no guarantee of a new keeper? You’d think he’d want to keep our most experienced premier league GK. Krul is better on one leg than darlow or Elliot.

          • Damon Horner

Maybe there is something else there with Krul, he’s only sitting on Brighton’s bench right now and is behind Ryan who has no PL experience, Hughton has worked with him before as well so definitely should trust him.

          • hetonmag

If Krul was that good he would have stayed in Holland.

        • TheFatController

The mistake you’ve made is using evidence in a calm way, and not emotion driven by inability to cope with the reality of being a low value squad in the PL.

Because, of course, all the other low value squads are ripping the league up right beside us in the table …

  • Michael Pattison

Ironically it’s this bad run of form that has probably got us closer to seeing fatty sell up…. the lads have played a blinder really:-). Hopefully the sale will go through and Chumply will follow Mike out the door and Rafa can get some competition for places

  • 1957

Mitrovic and Mbemba might not be long term solutions but they offer an immediate alternative to Benitez underperforming first choices. Why don’t we see them, its as simply as the manager doesn’t like them wants them out of the club and if they played and performed well he would have more trouble justifying that decision.

Will transfer funding in January solve the problem, not for me. A change of manager can only do that, I have no faith that Benitez would buy the right players to make a difference (more Spanish journeymen anyone…) or more crucially motivate a group of players he has publicly labelled as not good enough since the summer.

I appreciate some think he can do no wrong and they are welcome to believe that but I don’t. To the inevitable question from the manager’s supporters, I doubt any other manager could do worse than Benitez in the short term. That’s where we are, in need of a lift between now and the end of the season.

    • Geordiegiants

I’m a staunch Rafa backer, just say he goes, who do you think we could get in to replace him?
There is a MASSIVE difference to whom you want, and whom we could seriously get.

      • 1957

I totally understand why some supporters see what Benitez has done in the past and believe in him. I don’t and I have had doubts since the middle of last year and nothing he has done this year has allayed those doubts.

I’m not fussed who would replace him, almost anyone could do as well between now and the season end

        • hetonmag

So you would be happy with anyone would you, you could put Pep or Jose in charge and it wouldn’t make any difference like Jezza say’s we would end up with Kinnear or a Barry Fry type would they suit you.

      • Jezza

True. Some people on this forum seem to be under the illusion we’ll get Guardiola or Mourinho to replace Rafa when in reality we’re looking at Joe Kinnear or Barry Fry.

      • Damon Horner

It’s not going great at the moment but any incoming manager would have had no preparation for the window, will likely have to work with the same group of players Rafa has or will need a lot more money to replace them and even then not guaranteed to keep us up – it would also be a hefty cost dispensing of Rafa. I can’t see a manager who’s take it that’s worth the risk. Talk of Howe and Silva is just delusion, any manager attracted to an assumed wealthy backer would first need to see how they work and what they have.

        • Geordiegiants

We have as much chance of getting Howe or Silva as we do of getting Pep or Jose.

        • Geordiegiants

We have as much chance of getting Howe or Silva as we do of getting Pep or Jose.

  • Natturner26

Yedlin MOTM tonight. Joselu by far our worst player despite only having a sub’s appearance to embarrass himself and Rafa. Gayle second-worst. Rafa disgrace for no Mitro on the bench. 1 point in 24 is historically bad form for any team. If it isn’t time to go for Rafa it is time to start looking at Championship coaches for next season.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Manquillo, SloMo, Joselu, Perez ,Lejeune, you can`t win games with players like this
he brought back Lascelles yet dropped the wrong central defender, he could have played Mbemba or Clark at left back but didn`t.
Jonjo`s p1 ssed off, so what happens now ?
The Fat lad exits stage left with a wad of cash,
the World Class Managers reputation diminishes by the game
    the squad`s in Meltdown

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Can Rafa turn it around with the right financial backing.
i honestly don`t think so, his recruitment of players has been dismal even on a low budget. his team selections are bizarre to say the least.
is a great manager past his sell by date, who knows.
then we have the Silver Snide & Geordie John at WBA lurking just behind us like a couple of pantomime villains.
    Jesus wept, what a nightmare

    • Kneebotherm8

What about the two loan signings Rafa wanted pre season? Targett and Abraham.
Blocked by the powers that be,for reasons beyond me,and we end up with Manquillo and Joselu,I’ll be hearing next that they were Rafa’s first choice signings.
He’s been absolutely sht upon by Ashley and co.
In transfer dealings his is a nett minus spend, since he’s been here, and it would be ironic if he was sacked and the new manager given much needed funds.
Rafa has been denied proper backing in the transfer market by our lying, vindictive owner for daring to question him.

      • Damon Horner

People question Murphy signing but he signed mid July and a long way before Joselu, it’s very easy for the goalposts to move in terms of transfer budget, Rafa might well be screwing this up big time but while Ashley is calling the shots it’s hard to believe him over Rafa.

        • Kneebotherm8

Rafa’s being screwed up big time by Ashley.

      • hetonmag

Put Pepe Reina with the two you mention but the fat lad wouldn’t stump up the wages, don’t think we would be in the position we are with those three additions.

        • Kneebotherm8

          Totally agree.

      • Salty

Southampton wanted something like a £5m loan fee for Targett and Abraham wanted £75k p/w with Chelsea demanding he played at lease every other game. Both of those seem steep to me and we really should have been able to get better deals elsewhere.

        • Kneebotherm8

So we don’t pay the £5 million loan fee for left back Targett and instead pay £4.5 million transfer fee for right back Manquillo.
So we don’t pay 75k per week for Abraham( less than £4 million over the season) and instead pay £5 million for Joselu.
If we’d signed Abraham he’d have been playing most weeks never mind every other week.
Those were the players Rafa wanted in,but the powers that be didn’t allow it to happen,it’s just a pity the two we got weren’t on loan deals cos they’re two more deadwood planks we’ve got stuck on the books.

          • Salty

I don’t disagree with you that those 2 are planks. The 2 loans would have been expensive gambles for a year but there must have been better options out there. With a supposed £30m available for Jan let’s hope we don’t end up with Joselu, Manquillo, Atsu, Hanley Diame and Sels though eh?

          • Kneebotherm8

Thank Ashley for those types of signings, especially the first two.
Hanley was only brought in with the championship in mind along with Murphy.
As far as the loans were concerned,I don’t see £10 million or so being expensive gambles compared to £10 million for Joselu and Manquillo, who we’re now lumbered with for the next few years.

  • robbersdog

My preference for last night’s team would’ve seen Elliot, Mbemba and Hayden starting instead of Darlow, Lejeune and Diame.

I’ve always really liked Mbemba, I think he’s a class act, he’s skilful and committed and definitely an upgrade on Lejeune. Elliot isn’t significantly better than Darlow, but he’s definitely got the edge and should get the shirt until/unless we sign someone better. Diame is a complete dud and should be moved on in January; the fact that he and Joselu are in and around the first team epitomises the chronic lack of depth in our squad.

Our club is stagnating, and we need the impetus, energy and fresh perspective that a takeover would generate – at least in the short to medium term. And I can’t imagine that Amanda Staveley would buy the club without factoring in the need for significant investment in the squad. Right now, it all feels a bit desperate, but I’ve still got hope for a bright 2018.

  • Nut

To my mind this is a case of brinkmanship by Rafa towards Ashley, he is showing and highlighting the weaknesses and inadequacies of the team so that it is blatantly obvious to Ashley that he should have strengthened in the summer, in order to force Ashley’s hand into strengthening in January (should he be here).

In no way lately have I seen Rafa play what I would consider our best side.

Is the fact he doesn’t play Mitrovic totally because he doesn’t rate him or is it out of fear he might actually score and cause issues with his master plan.

While I probably wouldn’t get rid of Rafa (just yet) you never know the new owners might just decide to revive “King Kev” and bring him back for a 3rd stint as manager backing him to the hilt.

Now that would be where it could get interesting…….

When he was here the first time we nearly won the league and when he was here the 2nd time we didn’t look too bad either…. until he left that is….. would the senile old goat want a 3rd stint? You bet he would he has unfinished business here still!

    • grantham mag

Lets hope Amanda has Kes his and Terry Macs numbers.

    • Salty

King Kev, really??? The game has moved on. Every manager in the Prem would run rings round him tactically

  • S.G.M.

If there is any money to spend in Jan, I doubt Rafa will see it.

  • S.G.M.

Pulis is rubbing his hands together, he can name his price.
