There are many incredible/unbelievable stats when it comes to Mike Ashley and Newcastle United.

Difficult to believe we are already almost halfway through his 11th season of owning the club.

Everybody of course hoping that the end isΒ  nigh (of his ownership…not of the football club).

Of all the stats that sum up Ashley’s reign, it is surely the FA Cup ones that take some beating.

Newcastle have drawn out League Two side Luton to play in this season’s FA Cup third round and if they were to beat the Magpies, it would be the sixth season out of eleven under Mike Ashley, when NUFC have gone out of the FA Cup to a club who were outside the Premier League.

The overall record in the FA Cup under Ashley is played 18 and won four (games).

The four glorious victories have come against Stoke (a Championship club at the time), Plymouth (Championship), Blackburn (Premier League but relegated that season) and Birmingham (Championship).

To put Newcastle’s four third round victories into perspective, in the time that Mike Ashley has owned Newcastle, both Chelsea and Arsenal have lifted the trophy three times each.

Yet both sets of fans have regularly moaned about what is happening at their clubs and it is Newcastle supporters who are tagged as ‘too demanding’ and ‘deluded’.

All 18 FA Cup matches played by Newcastle under Mike Ashley:

Oxford 3 Newcastle 0 – 28 January 2017 (Fourth round!)

Newcastle 3 Birmingham 1 – 18 January 2017 (Third round replay)

Since 1990 only TWO clubs outside of the elite group have won the FA cup…. it is a waste of time unless you are an elite club.

Its not only the league that Sky and the Premier League killed it was football for the majority of fans…. Hope died circa 1990 when sponsorship created a huge divide.

Football has to change, club ownership and sponsorship has to create a more level playing field…..

AIG buying the title for the club of their choice isn’t doing a lot for balance.

Premier league survival is all that counts.

The most glaring thing about the stats above is out of all those games played we only pulled one top 4 club out of the hat so we can’t complain about being unlucky with the draw.

Meanwhile deep in the Chronicle offices…..

Headling…..’Why Newcastle United can’t afford to take Luton Town lightly in the FA Cup’ by Lee Ryder age thirteen and three-quarters…..

We can’t afford a cup run Mr Ryder, we haven’t had a strong enough squad to undertake the challenge for the last ten years…..

We might not be in a relegation fight today but by January we will be…. what is the matter with you? Ambition died when Ashley bought the club…. you knew that!….

….Yet you foster delusional beliefs for the sake of filling pages with guff.

……get yourself a job with the Liverpool Echo and free us from your interminable neverending nonsense!

The F.A.Cup should be a chance for fans to watch attractive football and forget about League worries for a day,not an annoying irrelevance ! I want to see the 1st team out there trying for a Cup run, giving us some hope for a change.

    • Michael Lisle

Agreed. It really annoys me that fans are happy just to finish 4th bottom. How many really exciting games have there been at St James in the last 10 years ? One or two ? Why are loyal fans denied the hope that a cup run brings. Surely winning a cup game brings confidence. Remember a couple of seasons ago when we were knocked out of the cup in the 3rd round as usual then went to Spain for a warm weather camp and lost the next few games ! It looks like the 2-2 draw at WBA could be the highlight of the season. The fans deserve better.

Spot on mate, can’t argue with any of that.
