Mark Lawrenson has contrasted the form of Newcastle and Leicester before Saturday’s game at St James Park.

Newcastle with one point from the last eighteen, whilst Leicester have beaten both Burnley and Spurs in their last two matches.

Mark Lawrenson also repeating what Rafa has been saying about the position he finds himself in: ‘Benitez has made his feelings clear about the limitations of his squad’.

However, he says that whatever his resources, the Newcastle boss ‘is still usually good at negating the opposition’s main strength’.

What he doesn’t mention is that at last Rafa Benitez is close to having a full squad available, Mikel Merino back to full fitness, whilst Atsu, Dummett, and hopefully Lascelles, are set to be also available this weekend.

Despite the differing levels of form, Lawrenson does though tip Newcastle to win the game 2-1, saying Rafa Benitez needs the victory.

Making his predictions alongside Mark Lawrenson for BBC Sport this weekend, Pointless co-presenter Richard Osman is ‘expecting a good game’ and has gone for a 2-2 draw.

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“Newcastle’s poor run continued with their defeat at Chelsea, and they have now taken only one point from their past six matches.

“Leicester, in contrast, beat Burnley to maintain their improvement under Claude Puel.

The Foxes are ninth in the table, which is around where they should be.

“I just fancy Newcastle to edge this one, though.

“Benitez has made his feelings clear about the limitations of his squad but he is still usually very good at negating the opposition’s main strength.

“His side need a win, and I think they will get one.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Leicester 1.”

Pointless co-presenter and Fulham fan, Richard Osman:

“This is a tough one to call.

“I like the way both teams play, and I think Leicester are coming back into a bit of form – especially Riyad Mahrez.

“It could be a good game. 2-2.”

Fair plays to Mark and Richard,if either of their predictions is correct, then at least we’ll not end up “pointless”

    • nufcslf

Even a single point would not be that bad with another home game to come. 3 would be massive to try and turn things around into a bit of a positive.

      • Kneebotherm8

A couple of points in the next two home games against these two in form teams is a bare minimum I would think if we’re gonna steady the ship.

  • Mitros gotta start

Getting pretty sick of hearing the old “squad is too thin” line now…..if the squad is that bad why do you constantly leave our best players on the bench Rafa?

    • Chris

Maybe as sick as I am hearing fans moan about Mitrovic.

      • Mike Adam

Chris, are you happy with the amount of goals NUFC have scored? If your answer is NO like it should be, then how do you, Rafa, or anyone else know that players like Mitro and Aarons would not increase our goals scored if given playing time?

      good question

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

I`ve stopped betting on them as Rafa`s gone off his nut with team selections,
if he picked our strongest 11 i`d say a narrow win for Newcastle

“I have never placed a bet with Betvictor, nor shall i until they pay taxes”
