When it comes to red cards, Newcastle United have a record that you can’t quite believe.

Jonjo Shelvey picked up the latest one on Wednesday night for two fouls, ones where the referee had a decision to make both times.

I’m not complaining that Martin Atkinson produced a yellow for each of them and sent the midfielder off but…

This was Newcastle’s 16th player to be sent off in the Premier League since January 2014.

Incredibly, in only six weeks time we will get to exactly four years since an opposition Premier League player saw a red card against Newcastle.

The last time there was a sending off was on 28 January 2014 during the Norwich 0 Newcastle 0 match.

Bradley Johnson red carded for the Canaries but ironically, even this only happened because it was sparked by Loic Remy firstly being sent off for Newcastle, the Norwich player then responding.

Fully 108 Premier League games have gone by without Newcastle benefiting from a sending off for the opposition in a Premier League match.

Countless times in these past few years of Premier League football, Newcastle supporters have wondered when opponents have escaped red cards, especially when you look at how many Newcastle players have been sent off in this timeframe.

Even on Wednesday night, the officials (and TV companies…) totally missed a deliberate elbow in the face by Wayne Rooney on Matt Ritchie.

Maybe we will see this finally redressed on Saturday and half the Arsenal team will get dodgy red cards to give us a bit of a chance…

remember gerald ashby at arsenal? basically let arsenal chop our players in half (dixon and winterburn)

Go back as far as Shearer and Uriah Rennie, as Leazes keeps alluding to Refs have an agenda with us.

  • Dillon Tovak

4 of our last 6 reds have been Mitro and Shelvey.
The reason we can’t rely on them.

It’s all a conspiracy? everybody hates us? Err No! I can’t explain it but being paranoid isn’t going to help.

The media and the authorities don’t like us itd blatant… They were desperate for trendy, hipster Brighton to win the league last year… Check out there penalties to ours….. And remember the penalty last season they disallowed and gave a free kick to the opposition? Howay man its blatant.

  • Leazes62

When was the last time we even got a penalty?

  • Phil Yare

quite unbelievable, when you add the red cards from last season in the championship its even more shocking. we aren’t a dirty team in the slightest, in fact we are a touch soft at times.
one thing we don’t do – we don’t give the opposition a hard time – so players from teams don’t get frustrated, i think that’s why a lot of strikers have a great scoring record against us. it’s like when hazard took that penalty….he could have closed his eyes, hit it with his wrong foot and it would have still went in
even benteke would put a pen in the top corner against us
