Ian Wright says Newcastle star needs to wake his ideas up

Ian Wright picked out one Newcastle player after the grim 0-0 draw against Brighton.

The BBC Sport pundit talking about Dwight Gayle.

However, Ian Wright didn’t have anything positive to say about the Newcastle striker, instead he was saying he has to be doing a lot better for both himself and his team.

The last six home games have seen the Magpies fail to score in five of them, the exception being the 3-2 defeat by Leicester, when both Gayle and Joselu scored.

That pair are equal top scorers with three Premier League goals each and Ian Wright says that is ‘Not enough’.

The former Arsenal forward thinks Dwight Gayle ‘Needs to quicken up on everything’.

With Newcastle creating so few chances, they desperately need their one natural goalscorer to start converting when the odd chance comes his way.

His three goals have come in 955 minutes of Premier League football, one every 318 minutes, basically one every three and a half games.

The returning presence of Jamaal Lascelles has seen Newcastle concede only five goals in their last five games, with two of those coming in the 3-2 win at West Ham.

So if Dwight Gayle can start popping them in at the other end, Newcastle could find a route to safety.

Ian Wright talking on Match of the Day:

“I saw Dwight Gayle miss a really good chance in the last knockings of the Manchester City game, The kind of chance he has to be taking now.

“He has got three goals up to now, think he is top scorer at Newcastle. Not enough.

“A great ball from Atsu (in the second half against Brighton), I think he (Gayle) could do more with the header, he just lets it hit him, he’s put nothing on it.

“He has got to whip his head on it, he has got to get the goalkeeper to work more.

“(Ball breaks for Dwight Gayle just inside Brighton box) He doesn’t look at Dunk at all, he doesn’t make a positive move. The touch is poor and he doesn’t get it out of his feet. Dunk is stretching and in the end he makes a good challenge – but Gayle’s touch is poor.

“Dwight Gayle needs to quicken up on everything.

“I don’t know what he is doing in training…he needs to do everything quicker, half a yard quicker, he just seems to be on his heels.”
