Absolutely over the moon for the lads and Rafa yesterday. Really please for Diame who I have heavily criticised recently, had a good game and even won a header. Saivet also, showed he was ” ring rusty ” initially illustrated by the poor backpass, but did very well to grow into the game and put in a performance to indicate he is as good as the rest in that position, good for you lad!

    • Mrkgw

Agreed and pleased in particular for Saivet who hadn’t been given much of an opportunity in the first team. Rafa miht have to have a re-think and hold onto him.

      • Pretty much think he was playing because we had no one else and at least has some experience. If he hadn’t scored that FK we would all be on his case right now :)

    • Diame always did alright in my books, he just can’t cut it against top 10 teams, but is always solid. In my books we need players like him in the squad with experience and physical presence and glad we didn’t sell him in January.
Perez is another matter. He started the season strong, but has been absolutely shocking in his last few outings(losing the ball too easy and looks slow of the mark, even though coming in as a late sub)
I think we can afford to lose him if a right offer comes, but I really want us to sell Shelvey at all costs. He’s done in my books.

  • Arty Hume

Just noticed some posts this morning confirming what we already knew about how Rafa’s hands were tied behind his back by the fat slug in the summer. Rafa deserves ultimate backing from us because he has had to put up with the lies and deceit no manager should have to cope with. No doubt about how he feels about it lately and his very well constructed delivery at interviews has hopefully backed the treacherous fat one into a corner he cannot get out of and has no other option but to sell. Roll on that day and hopefully it will be soon. Come on Mandy there’s a welcome you will not believe just waiting for you in the TOON!

Do you not get bored typing the same fkn numbers? ya need to get out more man!!!

        • Clarko

There’s this thing where you can copy and paste text, it’s super helpful when dealing with a large number of uninformed people.

Why don’t you try to contribute to this forum? Instead of telling people to “get out more”, while doing the exact same thing they are doing, the phrase “practice what you preach” springs to mind, the word “hypocrite” follows.

          • Taz

I only told you to get out more! do you now class yourself as people? No wonder you talk so much crud, there’s obviously a few of you in there arguing with yourselves( as you now class yourself as plural) . As for liking my own posts…… only a muppet would not like what they write! I look forward to your drawn out ridiculous reply :-)

          • Clarko

So you couldn’t think of your own response so you just went with the typical on the spectrum, “you are, but what am I”, playground insult. It suits you.

“As for liking my own posts…… only a muppet would not like what they write”. That’s funny, I see that you didn’t like the post that I’m responding to, I guess that makes you, by your own definition, a “muppet”.

            It’s just too easy.

          • Taz

I didn’t want you to get upset, don’t worry though you will back to school soon, the bullies have probably missed you.. try not to get so wrapped up in your own importance it just banter!!!!

          • Clarko

Doesn’t “banter” have to be funny? I mean just look at the state of that response, “you will back to school soon, the bullies have probably missed you”, it’s just a really, really, thick response. Coming from someone with a bugs bunny profile picture 🤦 😂

          • Taz

Now that’s funny!!! It’s a Tasmanian devil. The sad thing about your response is you try to be aggressive. Banter is back and forth playfully teasing remarks. You unfortunately don’t get it, you are more along the lines of petulant.( look it up) Anyway I’ve had enough of your responses as I’m sure yo have of mine. So let’s agree to disagree, and continue to give our opinions about the football. :-)

          • Clarko

It is funny that you know it’s a “Tasmanian devil”, it’s funny that you have it as your profile picture, all the while saying stuff like, “you will back to school soon, the bullies have probably missed you”.

What are we agreeing to disagree about? I was talking about football before you told me to “to get out more”. I’ve had a look through your profile and you don’t talk about football:

            “T I T. !!!!”

“He will probably de bacon as well but that’s about as much as the FCW will spend”

“Or better still sucking on a sawn off and pulling the trigger”

“Eventually!!! But will it be to late🤔🔫”

“Who gives a flying fk what that little [email protected] thinks”

“Give ya heed a shake man!!!! Muppet”

You don’t talk about football, you just whinge and complain. It’s all just pathetic, you are pathetic. Have fun though, “Taz”.

          • Clarko

It’s called research, it’s how you make people look stupid, the 90 seconds it took was definitely worth. Maybe look into taking some evening classes, a new year, new you type of deal.

          • Taz

            Yawn!!!

      • Rich Lawson

But what did most of them already have in place in their squad before that ?

        • Clarko

You tell me, what did those teams have in place before that? Did those teams spend €63.75m the in the 16/17 season like Newcastle did or another €108.26m in the 15/16 season like Newcastle did? You tell me.

          • Rich Lawson

Most of them had premiership football.Happy Christmas by the way.

          • Clarko

And there we go, nothing to say.

            Happy Christmas.

      • You forget that most of these teams had proven Prem Players and didn’t need to spend that much(Stoke, West Ham, Palace, Bournemouth, Burnley)
Our biggest buy was on Murphy- unproven British talent for a bloated price. If he was not from the UK would surely cost 5m tops. We technically didn’t get anyone else apart from Joselu who was a last minute desperate buy(Atsu was already in and Merino is on loan). I think if Rafa knew that 12m was going to be the last he got, would have surely not taken Murphy in, but gone for a more experienced player.

        • Clarko

Have Stoke, West Ham, Palace, Bournemouth and Burnley spent €221.31m over the past three seasons? Your point would be more valid if both Huddersfield and Brighton were rooted to the bottom of the table, they’re not, if they can be “successful”, so should Newcastle, we have spent enough to be competitive and survive relegation.

“Our biggest buy was on Murphy- unproven British talent for a bloated price”, and whose fault was that? Benitez.

“I think if Rafa knew that 12m was going to be the last he got, would have surely not taken Murphy in, but gone for a more experienced player”. That doesn’t make sense. Both Manquillo and Joselu were brought in after Murphy meaning there was more, not only that, but since the window closed we have had to hear Benitez go on and on about how Newcastle didn’t spend the money that he was promised, he expected more, he believed he had more, your point is invalid.

          • I don’t believe Murphy was Rafa’s buy, not by a long shot. He OKed it, but stinks of Ashley’s value to sell buys. I believe Rafa brought very capable players to our team and has in fact made profit from all buys and sales since when he’s been here. I know you just want to hate at it, but both Brighton and Huddersfield are not doing much better than we are. Remember Huddersfield should have won the Championship, yet had very poor results in the last 10 games. We were missing key players through injuries and stupid suspensions for 5-6 games which we lost, and we lost besides from top 8 teams the rest by a small margin due to errors from players. Overall we are as solid as any Bottom 10 team and have a 50/50 to win every game against those teams.

          • Clarko

It doesn’t matter what you believe, it matters what is true, the truth is that Benitez wanted Murphy, Ashley doesn’t have anything to do with the club other than pick the board and supply the money.

Benitez on Murphy: “We were here in Ireland last year and we were talking about Jacob’s brother. We liked his brother and we spoke about him. I was following both of them – but I think we have signed the right one, the one I wanted. I have received a lot of information about both, and it was positive about both of them. But in this case we wanted the type of player (Jacob is) and were happy with that.”

Profit is not profit if you don’t receive the money for “3-4 years”. So Benitez, hasn’t made actual profit.

The Championship campaign, has nothing to do with this discussion, and I don’t know where you have got the idea that Huddersfield “should have won” it, they finished 5th. Irrelevant anyways.

“Overall we are as solid as any Bottom 10 team and have a 50/50 to win every game against those teams”, then why are you arguing with me? Where did I state that Newcastle were not as solid as any bottom half team? Where did I state that Newcastle should be finishing in the top six? I didn’t.

I don’t know what you mean by “hate at it”, am I hating because I listed the spends of some PL clubs? Or because I stated that Benitez bought Murphy? These are facts, this is not hate, 1+1 is 2 whether you like it, believe it or not.

          • Not everything you say is a fact, but I’ll give you the Murphy part. I just somehow get the feeling you don’t think Rafa is right for the job, which frankly shocks me. Who do you think is willing to come to our club right now and do a better job? For more than 10 years we’ve gone through Muppet after Muppet, feels so great to have a real Manager who actually understands tactics and football, but I see lots of you really bringing it down on him and I don’t get it, really.
Pards and McClown were lynched after each game, because once the losing started they just didn’t have a Plan B and couldn’t make the players care for the shirt. With Rafa I see most players really putting in a shift, something I haven’t seen in ages at NUFC. So, why all the hate?

          • Clarko

“Not everything you say is a fact”, well, yeah, it kind of is, I have provided evidence to support every claim I have made.

“I just somehow get the feeling you don’t think Rafa is right for the job, which frankly shocks me”, is that the same feeling you had about Murphy not being Rafa’s singing?

“I see lots of you really bringing it down on him and I don’t get it”, to put it politely, you’re uninformed, biased and a little ignorant. This based on the whole Murphy issue, the spend issue, the very odd Huddersfield comment, the hating comment, you’re just out of touch.

Again in your comment you accuse me (and the fanbase) of “hate”, it’s not hate, it’s justified criticism, this very debate has justified the criticism, there is no reason/excuse for Benitez to not be successful this season, and that’s not saying he won’t be successful this season, but so far I’m not impressed with his time at Newcastle thus far, the relegation which he was brought in to stop but failed, the horrible football during last seasons campaign, the horrible signings (Hanley, Sels, Gamez, Lazaar, Manquillo, Murphy, Joselu ), the unwarranted isolation of players (Mitrovic, Mbemba, Saivet, Krul, Gayle), the stubbornness of using a (failing) tactic/formation, the constant unjustified complaining about funds and the constant complaining about the quality of our players (that he signed himself).

Now, with that said, does that mean that I want him gone? No. Does that mean that he isn’t the right man for the job? No.

On a side note, previous managers being awful does absolve Benitez of criticism, his CV does absolve him of criticism.

          • That’s a hell of a comment. I appreciate you taking your time to answer, so I’ll make a more detailed one myself. First on the so called Rafa horrible transfers. Hanley, Sels, Gamez and Lazaar were no-brainers last year. Hanley was top of the Championship wish list of every club back then. Who wouldn’t have signed Gamez who was playing in the Champions League 3 seasons ago, Sels who was a promising keeper, Lazaar who has plenty Serie A experience with Palermo, even some goals. Atsu was and still is our best signing by a mile. Those signings(apart from Atsu, Ritchie and Gayle) should have walked the Championship, but didn’t. Couldn’t gel with the team or with the Championship football. Mitrovic had plenty of chances last year in the Championship and was below par, need I remind that 34-year old Murphy was doing much better (I would have actually kept him as backup)? Manquillo and Joselu were brought as cover for parking meter money. Rafa never froze out Gayle, he was injured and not 100% for a long time. He is complaining about fund because he was forced to buy from the bargain bin! Thank God we got Merino, Joselu and Manquillo for almost nothing. Joselu for me is OK, and is technically and tactically far better than Mitro who could hardly score in the Championship. Bottom line is we are struggling, and the fault is mostly Ashley’s. Sure, Benitez gets it wrong from time to time, but that’s only being human and with mostly bargain buys and he is always looking for a plan B and C , switching teams, tactics to get something more out of mediocre at best squad. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Tonight it didn’t, I personally would not have changed the City Team apart from Maybe playing Gayle instead of Joselu from the start.

          • Clarko

This discussion has took a turn, this isn’t about about rating each individual player in the squad.

The players I listed were/are bad signings, the reputation of what they did before coming to Newcastle doesn’t matter, it’s irrelevant, it’s what they have done here that counts. The players I have listed, didn’t contribute enough, some not at all. Since Benitez is 100% in control of transfers, he is responsible.

On the Mitrovic situation, right now, neither Joselu or Gayle are producing, the team is not getting the required goals to win matches, both Joselu and Gayle are not scoring enough, it’s not working (I hope you agree). So why not play Mitrovic? He has scored 11 goals for the senior national team, a goal every 204 minutes, in his first season in the Premier League, as a 21 year old, he scored 9 goals for a side that was relegated (a goal every 247 minutes). So if our other options are not working, why not? I also disagree with you suggesting that Mitrovic having “plenty of chances” last season, he only played 1121 minutes of league football (12.5 games worth of time).

“He is complaining about fund because he was forced to buy from the bargain bin”. How was he forced? Take another look at the spends, he had more money than 8 of the lower half teams.

How is it Ashley’s fault? You haven’t given a single valid reason. How?

  • Stevie

Eh? Do people even watch the game or just go with their usual prejudices? Let’s just stick Perez last as we’ve decided we don’t rate him. Clark get’s done (again) for pace as Arnautovic literally walks past him, gives away a penalty with a clumsy lung (even if outside the area) and then beaten to the header for West Ham’s 2nd. So obviously third best after Atsu and Lascelles. Again…eh?

    • gallowgate26

I gave Clark a 6, below all of the other back five. I thought he was done too easily by Arnautovic despite a great starting position, Mbemba or Lejune would have prevented that goal in my opinion. I gave Eliot an 8, he is so underrated, even by Rafa, it’s laughable to me. I think if he hadn’t dropped him for Darlow we’d have the 20 points by now. In that run of 1-0- defeats and the Leicester game, Darlow made some real howlers. Elliot is by no means world class but he is PL class IMO. Hopefully with Woodman as a long term successor after going out on loan. No way should Rafa spend a fee or big wages on a GK in January, outfield positions are critical.

      • Rich Lawson

Keep Woodman for the rest of the season and give him a game soon or he will get sold for a pittance and be England’s No1 in 3 years time.

      • Elliot was terrible with crosses as always, that’s why Rafa doesn’t rate him. He is a great shot-stopped, but doesn’t time his runs with crosses and is very slow(athletically speaking).
He is a superb backup stopper and better than Darlow, but not our solution for a solid long-term Number 1.

    • Taz

Agree Clark looked slow, tired, fkd I usually rate him along side the skipper but yesterday it asked her swapped energy levels with slow mo.

      • Clark really looked tired to me the whole game. He was great in the air and with the ball, but failed to deal well with the threats on the ground. For me both Clark and Lejeune should be given a run as defensive midfielders as both can pass and run with the ball well. Technically good players, but both a bit slow.

  • Peaky Magpie

Going to be very interesting to see who he puts into the middle against Citeh.

  • Natturner26

Thought Joselu and Gayle did nothing, and no striker on the bench. The rest of the team had to step up to score goals and they did.

    • Thank God you are not our manager. Did Nothing? Both were great against West Ham, sure Gayle missed a few, but they held the ball and linked up play as well as pressed hard on the opposition. Both actually forming a great bond and goals will surely come.
