Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on the West Ham v Newcastle controversial penalty.
Newcastle had just taken a crucial 2-1 lead early in the second half when play then switched to the other end.
Ciaran Clark slid in and brought Antonio down on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, West Ham fans said inside the box and the visiting supporters claimed just outside.
A penalty was given and justice served when Rob Elliot saved Ayew’s spot-kick.
Often the case with wrongly given penalties that when they aren’t then converted, they can get forgotten about…
Newcastle of course quickly then going 3-1 up and eventually winning 3-2.
Dermot Gallagher has now given his verdict and sided with Newcastle fans, declaring that the foul was definitely outside the box and that if VAR (Video Assistant Referee) had been in use, the match officials wouldn’t have been put into the position to make the wrong call.
‘Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark is judged to have fouled West Ham forward Michail Antonio just inside the area.’
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“Wrong decision, no penalty.”
Dermot Gallagher says:
“Tough, tough call in fairness and the VAR will clear this up on FA Cup weekend.
“And I do not think anybody would criticise a referee for this decision because look at the speed we are watching and the player is already in the penalty area.
“It is just outside, but it is marginal and you could also argue that it continues inside.”
