It is Newcastle v Everton tonight and what looks a must win match for the home side.

Maybe ‘must win’ is a little strong for some people but with Arsenal and West Ham away, followed by Manchester City at home, it could be painful looking at the Premier League table after 20 games if Newcastle don’t get three points against the scousers.

It is also a matter of confidence and momentum, on the back of only one point from seven matches and mistakes blighting the performances, Rafa’s team are desperate for a decent display and most importantly, the win.

With Atsu and Lascelles now available to start, Newcastle fans can hardly now have any complaints about injuries at this stage of the season, into December and only Paul Dummett still to get match fit.

However, for the visitors it is a different matter.

Sam Allardyce pre-Newcastle press conference:

“Jagielka and Keane are back, but no Baines and none of the other long-term injuries are back.”

What this means is that Everton will be missing the following players against Newcastle:

Leighton Baines

Ross Barkley

Yannick Bolasie

Seamus Coleman

James McCarthy

Ramiro Funes Mori

Maarten Stekelenburg

Despite them picking up points recently, with three wins and a draw in their last six games, Everton are still looking vulnerable.

They are still yet to win on the road with four defeats and four draws so far.

Newcastle have had an extra day to prepare plus Everton have just had their biggest game of the season when drawing at Liverpool. With their injuries they will have few options to change things around and with only 21% possession at Anfield, they will have put an awful lot into that game.

Hopefully now they have a mid-table position they might not see this as a game where they have to give it everything (a bit like when they lay down for Sunderland in May 2016…), with their next game at home to Swansea maybe even subconsciously the Everton players will be thinking that is the better/safer option for another three points.

Maybe grasping at straws for positives but one thing is for sure, Newcastle have far more chance of beating Everton without Coleman, Bolasie, Baines and Barkley on the pitch.

i think its time to go back to 4-2-3-1 or try 3-5-2, the 4-4-2 experiment has failed

    • TheNutJob

No formation will work, the players aren`t good enough

      • Peter Stabler

Giant killing still happens, we are not beaten until the final whistle – it’s Everton not Real Madrid, we need to concentrate for 90 and stick to the plan, then we have a chance.

    • toonterrier

Maybe we should try 5-4-3-2 as we know the scousers cant count so they’ll never notice.

  • TheNutJob

they`ve been getting results without those players so the article is pointless as we probably will be tonight

“7 players missing” ! I know we are s**te but playing against us with only 4 players is stretching it a bit Hippo Heed.Mind you they’ll probably still get a point.

  • Whitehurst

Most of those 7 have been out for a while tho….4 haven’t even played a game this season!!

    • Kneebotherm8

I can’t stand the sight of that disgusting creature open mouth chewing.

When you think Burnley are fourth in the league and our game against them could have gone either way there is not much difference between most teams. With the captain back and Gayle stating to score goals on a regular basis it will not take much to turn things round. New signings are not automatically going to fit in and get us out the hole.

  • BillytheFish

The way we are playing they need to start with only 7 players to give us a chance…Hoping for better..
