Ciaran Clark is hoping confidence from a first win in 10 games can inspire Newcastle when they take on Manchester City.
He accepts that ‘The squad they’ve got is unbelievable’ and that Guardiola’s team ‘are going to create chances’.
However, Clark says that ‘If we can keep it tight and then create a couple of chances then we can catch them by surprise, maybe’.
Everton are the only Premier League club to take anything off Manchester City and that came in a 1-1 draw when the champions-elect had to play for over half the game with 10 men.
The timing of this match gives Manchester City such a massive extra advantage, as though they needed it, with the busy festive programme obviously favouring those with stronger squads.
A perfect away record of nine away wins and scoring 24 goals, has seen Man City concede only five on their travels.
Their overall record this season is extraordinary as they have 55 points from a possible 57, if they keep that form up in the second half of the season it would give then a pretty incredible 110 points by the finish. To put that into context, Chelsea hold the Premier League record with 95 points back in 2004/05.
Guardiola’s team even went to Old Trafford and totally dominated in the derby two weeks ago, with 65% possession away at their closest challengers, it is obvious we are going to see Man City with the vast majority of the ball.
In football nothing is impossible though and Ciaran Clark declares ‘Hopefully we can be the team that stops their run’, Manchester City having won their last 17 Premier League matches.
A gutsy performance and no injuries is my personal double hope, what happens after that Newcastle can probably do very little to control.
“It (Man City match) is going to be hard work for a start.
“They have obviously spent a lot of money on talent and they have obviously got loads of talented players, the squad they’ve got is unbelievable.
“Hopefully we can take the confidence from the game at West Ham into the City game and who knows what can happen.
“When you play against teams like City you know they are going to create chances.
“It is going to be one of those games that if we can keep it tight and then create a couple of chances then we can catch them by surprise, maybe.
“We know it’s going to be tough against City, they’re an unbelievable side which they’ve shown all season.
“But we’ll go out there and give it our best shot and then who knows what might happen.
“Hopefully we can be the team that stops their run.”
