Rafa Benitez returned to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea fans once again showed themselves up.

You couldn’t hear much from them overall but during the game but you did hear them dishing out stick to their former boss, who in the space of six months delivered the Europa League trophy and Champions League football via third in the Premier League.

Fair to say that the Chelsea fans generally saw the game as a bit of a walkover despite going one down.

Also fair to say they don’t have much good to say about Newcastle fans, although the feeling is mutual!

Eden Hazard was rested against Swansea in midweek but Antonio Conte played his ‘A’ team against Newcastle, I guess it is something to at least be treated with respect by the Chelsea boss, although it would have been interesting to see what would have happened without their Belgian superstar…

Comments taken from various Chelsea message boards (Talk Chelsea, Shed End, CFC Net):

‘Winning the Europa League clouded the Rafa Benitez failings that season.

His coaching cost us a lot of Premier League points, a chance at another league cup final and a World Club Championship win.

He always set us up not to lose, he never set us up to win. Even when we were chasing a win, his choice of a sub was a RB.

Us winning the Europa League was great, but considering the opposition we had, it would have been a major cock up if we had not won it. Any of those teams we faced would have been an expected easy win if it was a Champions League game.

He also tried to force Terry into an early retirement by saying things like Terry couldn’t play more than one game a week anymore. He refused to apologise for past comments made at the club and it’s fans and he also refused to back us when Suarez sunk his teeth into Ivanovic.

Benitez never even tried to get on the right side of us Chelsea fans.

He used us as a way to spark some life into his managerial career. He doesn’t deserve our respect, he never did enough to earn it.’

‘I would give the team more credit, we’ve left our small bad patch behind us and we are outplaying teams easily at the moment. The other teams aren’t getting a sniff at goal. I just watched the extended highlights that seemed to be Newcastle’s only chance of the game and even their goal was fortunate and a dead giveaway.’

‘Well done Chelsea, love sending those maggots back up to the north east with a defeat.’

‘A comfortable win at the Bridge yesterday after a dodgy start. Could have scored more goals but for some good goal-keeping and blocks by the Newcastle defence.’

‘Slow start (not that I saw it, with 20 minutes of trying to find a decent stream), but comfortable enough in the end. Always good to beat the FSW.’

‘I haven’t watched the Newcastle match yet but it looks like they barely had a sniff at goal all game.’

‘Thought we played pretty well, having Hazard in the team was a huge plus. We never let the mistake or bad referee decisions get to us, and kept going at them until we get the 2 goals lead.’

‘I’m struggling to find a team in the world that is as dependent on their star player as we are. You take Hazard out and we struggle to score goals in any game but the very easiest opponents.’

You could find a few who changed their minds after Rafa Benitez won the EL, but most still hated his guts.’

‘Should have been at least 5-1 given the possession we had.  I wonder how many are pleased with this performance and how many disappointed.’

‘Thank you Matt Ritchie.’

‘Funny, as soon as we needed a goal we started to play great.  As soon as we encouraged Benitez to sit back, it became easy.

Shame we didn’t start the game as if we wanted to win it.  Shame we didn’t even pick a team to win it, given how now winning looks so much easier than hanging on for a draw.’

‘Complete domination after shaky moments early. Moses in particular improved massively after some jitters early on.’

‘Hate Geordies.’

‘We were very good, one of our best performances this season. Hazard, take a bow, son.’

‘Really poor start and to some extent them taking the lead helped us.

A good win, expected, some good play and hazard was electric.’

‘Weren’t at our best again today but got the win to put us level with Utd. Good performances from Drinkwater & Moses.’

‘We were at our best today..  really good.Lovely link up play and everyone putting in loads of effort.

Best we have played this season.’

‘Ref was a geordie.’

This Newcastle team is SO mediocre looking.’

Yeah, yeah How much have both clubs spent.
Man City have spent £700m+ to build the side that beat West ham. £200m last summer alone. It’s hardly a fair playing field..

    • paul mclaughlan

Chelsea have spent well over a billion since the oligarch arrived. The funny thing is they have 18 months to pay him back if he ever leaves. Fingers crossed 🤞.

      • Leazes Ender

        ….they have a debt?

        • paul mclaughlan

  • Mrkgw

      • Albert Stubbins

Has he not sent lambeeeeezze fund to sort you out yet? That would be ppv deffo.!!

    • Albert Stubbins

I remember them as far back as 81 outside the waterloo. As an 11 year old it was a mixture of shock awe and frenzied excitement as I saw their escort smashed to bits as a three pronged attack hit them from Tilly’s and the star as well as the waterloo emptying in unison. To be fair to them they brought thousands up twice in early 80 s. It was like a siege in newcastle. My first experience down there was a late 80’s. Mad times. How times have changed with there support. Hooray Henry’s and tourists from what I see now.

      • anyobrien

Aye remember the farmers rest slashing they were a reet squad… The old Chelsea ground was not for the faint hearted

      • Grahame Johnson

When Chelsea got promoted in the 80s they filled the gallowgate and all their alleged famous headhunters got the trouble they where looking for, the clock, fish bar and market tavern emptied to get stuck in to about 40 Chelsea and most of them blokes proberbly didn’t go to the match

  • David Low

Well I certainly don’t hate you Geordies.Always made to feel welcome when in Newcastle and enjoy the banter.

    • Dennis Tate

      Thanks mate.

    • Toonrobbybobson

Theres always some bad fans at any clubs.

  • Dennis Tate

Blah, Blah here they go again
    Just can’t help themselves.
    Disrespectful card board cut outs.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Hate Chelsea with a passion remember being in the Companions club with my son and daughter and a few Chelsea fans came in and played pool which was only twenty pence for a game to which the son asked the father why it was so cheap and the father replied it’s because the Geordies are poor and have no money.
Thirty years back one of supporters from Darlington defected to Chelsea and let an attack on the Farmers Rest in the Haymarket stabbing three people and also pointed out fans down at Stamford Bridge. There fans are smug arrogant and were fake gold.

    • Brian Standen

For all their so called reputation they never really showed in NE1, the Farmers Rest incident was a cowardly attack on innocent football fans!

  • hetonmag

Agree with one of the cockney scum without Hazard they would have struggled that’s for sure.

  • Toonrobbybobson

Love themselves when without Roman they are nothing.

For all the huff and puff took 2 massive mistakes from Ritchie and no tracking back from Merino (Hazard shanked shot) to win 3-1 at home against a so called mediocre team that was half the cost of their bench.

Was i the only one not that impressed with Chelsea? Poor for reigning champions. I thought Man United were much better.

    • Jezza

Ther’d be something wrong if they didn’t beat easily us when one player on their subs bench cost more than our entire starting eleven put together.

  • Whitehurst

    Cockney wan*#%s!!

  • Grahame Johnson

The one thing most Chelsea fans over 45 have is a respect for Newcastle fans we where one of the few clubs that always turned up at Stamford bridge in the 70s. 80s.and 90s also Newcastle away used to be a big game for them Gateshead twice west gate road and behind the east stand where places it kicked off

    • Jezza

Since Abramovic Chelsea have attracted a new legion of bandwagon jumping glory seekers with no idea what being a football supporter is about. Mind you their fans in the old days tended to be by and large a bunch of right wing hooligans.

  • Rich Lawson

Isn’t there an episode of the ”Likely Lads” in the 70’s where Bob and Thelma take Terry to a dinner party ? On finding out the host supports Chelsea,Terry says”I hate Chelsea with their show business fans”

    • Jezza

Yes the episode is “Guess who’s coming to dinner”. One of the best.

  • David White

Was it just me, or did their fans hardly celebrate when they scored? Was listening to it on the radio, and you can normally tell before the commentator says anything that there’s been a goal due to the celebrations, but Chelsea’s fans sounded more like they’d won a free kick than scored!

    Spoilt I suppose!

  • BillytheFish

What a shame it has descended back to this…..
I have good friends all over the UK made through away trips including Chelsea, maybe we should sort our own problems first…..
