Alan Shearer watched along with fifty thousand other Newcastle fans.

A Newcastle team outclassed by visitors Leicester and only sheer perseverance kept United in the game, Dwight Gayle’s smart 73rd minute goal looking like it was going to earn a point.

However, the gulf in quality was plain to see as Newcastle repeatedly lost the ball and Leicester looked fast and dangerous every time they broke with pace.

Nobody expected an instant fix but the fact that the last three transfer windows have seen Mike Ashley make a near £30m profit is really showing through.

After a £40m profit in summer 2016 and not a penny spent in January 2017, we all relied on significant investment this summer.

Instead it was a net spend of £11.5m for NUFC as both Brighton and Huddersfield had net spends of over £40m each.

Nobody expected to be competing for Neymar but there is a middle ground. Rafa had to shop in the bargain basement this summer and it is really showing.

The likes of Manquillo, Joselu and Lejeune were just not good enough, whilst others such as Hayden and Yedlin are finding it hard to compete at this higher level.

You can get away with having a couple of players who aren’t really good enough but not half a dozen.

Mike Ashley failed Rafa Benitez in the summer when he didn’t keep his promises and he failed Alan Shearer and the rest of the Newcastle fanbase.

Alan Shearer can’t wait to see the back of Mike Ashley and until that happens, difficult to see anything positive ahead.

Alan Shearer:

“Nowhere near good enough Newcastle United today.

“Sell our club Mr Ashley to someone who wants to be here before it’s too late again.”

I’ll keep saying it – Rafa out,
I don’t adhere to the sympathy vote – “ah but poor Rafa he’s got a terrible squad”. One point from seven games is down to terrible team selections and tactics – poor management. He WON’T get it right. His stubbornness and dedication to his ‘Spanish mafia’ at the club is S T U P I D

  • zidangus

There are worse squads than Newcastle doing better in the PL. Come on Benitez you should be getting more out of the players you have. This is just not good enough, questions need to be asked about Benitez and the terrible tactics he is playing with, you can only blame the lack of transfers for so long.

  • fistsofsteel2

Credit to Mitrovich for remaining professional whilst forced to be humiliated by Rafa’s selection of his absolutely abysmal Spanish signing Joselu week in week out.

    • Leicester Mag

At present we’ll die wondering – surely Mitrovic has to be given a change because sure as hell Plan (or maybe it should be plank) A isn’t working.

  • Leicester Mag

At the moment if plan A doesn’t work Rafa tries plan A, again. Were this any other manager the knives would be out. This is a poor team / squad ill equipped to survive. All the more reason to play what on paper at least seems your strongest team and when things go wrong don’t simply repeat the same tired approach. When Perez is the answer the question is wrong. Watched the game today with a Leicester fan in Leicester comes to something when rather than being elated most Leicester fans expected to win. If something doesn’t change and soon we are nailed on to be relegated with this squad.

  • Paul Patterson

Agree with the sentiments, however Rafa can’t be absolved of blame.
Has he now fell out with Shelvey as well as Mitrovic? A match winner and STILL our top premier league goal scorer..

    • goggsy

He can’t Paul. But there’s no doubt in my mind that had Rafa have been given anything near to what he wanted in the summer,we would not be getting relegated. He has never wanted Shelvey or Mitrovic and would have snapped someone’s hand off in the summer if he thought the cash would be ‘re invested is someone he did want.Aarons is a mystery,Mbemba is one of our best players. The Perez,Diame situation just heaps on the despondancy, totaly agree that he seems bonkers with what he has. Should have walked in the summer when Ashley didn’t cough up,personaly think he’ll be gone by the time we get relegated.

    • Peaky Magpie

Definitely something happened with Shelvey Paul.It really is a “if your face doesn’t fit” regime with Benitez. He’s got his obvious favourites (his own signings) who are undroppable and are not up to standard.Didnt the same happen at Liverpool ? Yes he won things there but let’s face it Gerrard was the driving force for most of their success not the manager.

  • Leazes Ender

Ten years too late, why not speak out sooner Mr, Shearer?

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

He can`t hear you Al, he`s in the States

    • Leazes Ender

Hope he took his helicopter they have a range of only 300 miles

  • goggsy

Damage done, takeover or no takeover, this season we ‘re down and there’s no amount of money in January going to keep us up.

    • Jezza

No ammount of money is exactly what the club will spend in January.

      • goggsy

That’s what I would expect too.

        • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Should we put a figure on it? £10 says we spend more than a net £10m

      • Oooh bobbi fleckman

        Genius, how about a bet?

        • Jezza

Well considering you are the “genius” who was vehemently insisting in the summer that the likes of Joselu, Lejeune, Manquillo, Murphy and Merino were top quality signings I will treat that comment with the contempt it deserves.

          • Leazes Ender

I’ve blocked him …. so no idea what the daft b*gger is wasting his time on…. don’t bite.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Ha ha ha, your pathetic ego couldn’t cope with being challenged? All you lies still get highlighted even if you don’t see my comment. What a fool.

          • Jezza

I’ve blocked the other ID’s he posts under. I really should block him altogether. He’s just a wind up merchant.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Merino, Lejeune and Murphy (slowly upping his game) are decent. Personally, I struggle with the idea of playing most of a match with Joselu (i perhaps can see why he starts) whilst we have a game changer in Mitro sitting it out. I struggle with the idea that JJS isn’t getting a chance to partner Merino.

The bet I offer is that we spent more than we bring in this January.

Personally, I think we need a left back, striker and ideally, both having a bit of pace.

          • Jezza

Well from what I have seen this season Merino, Lejeune and Murphy are all truning out to be exactly what I expected when we signed them. A player who got two games last season, a 26 year old with one season of top flight football in his entire career and an untried youngster from a Championship club. You may not rate Joselu now but four months ago you were banging on about what a great signing he was. going to be

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

As it happened, I Josulu was ok with Gayle on Saturday. It was the midfield where we lacked, that should have been put right with JJS

  • Leicester Mag

Thing is this will make no difference. Ashley has shown time and time again only this he listens to is money. Ultimately only hope his hubris and arrogance bring him down but fear we’ve a long way to fall before that happens

  • Monkseaton Magpies

We should have scored at least four goals as missed two sitters they were rubbish at the back if we pushed forward we could have won missed a great chance after going one nil up and another at two two They got two own goals so Shearer shut your mouth things are not going well we need to get out of it .

  • Tino o

There should have been a ps Rafa sort yourself out

  • Tino o

5million a year for throwing games giz a job I can do that!

  • TheFatController

Oh the irony, Ashley fans often point out he appointed Rafa so deserves credit

Then shearer criticises Ashley and apologists blame Rafa.

The owner is wholly responsible for choosing the manager. If you don’t like Rafa it’s Ashley to blame. He employs him. Kick Ashley not Rafa.

So, stop diverting blame from Ashley. If you want Rafa out but he’s not, that’s only one man’s fault…Rafa didn’t kidnap Ashley’s family and say ‘never sack me or else’

  • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Hold on, £11.5m net spend? According to my maths, our net spend was €22m + £6m option taken for Merino.
