Alan Shearer spoke as he found on Saturday lunchtime.

The Newcastle legend not getting too downhearted after watching his team lose to Chelsea.

Newcastle took a surprise 12th minute lead through Dwight Gayle, very reminiscent of the game at Old Trafford last month.

That game saw NUFC collapse 4-1 to Manchester United but today was not quite so dramatic.

Chelsea did turn it around before the break and led 2-1 at half-time but it took until the 74th minute before they eventually finished Newcastle off.

Alan Shearer describing it with a heavy dose of realism ‘Effort was there but beaten by a much better team’.

Rafa Benitez is of course praying that new owners come in very soon and enable better quality players to come in.

Nobody expects Newcastle to go man for man with Chelsea at the moment but sadly it was simply damage limitation at Stamford Bridge today.

Alan Shearer:

“No complaints today.

“Effort was there but beaten by a much better team.

“When you go shopping in Poundstretcher what do you expect?

“It’s a Championship squad playing in the Premier League.

“Whoever we picked they’d have been better than us.”

    Al`s a genius ain`t he
Victor pay your taxes, Leazes is driving me sane

  • Leicester Mag

And this will never change while this malignant parasite remains.

  • HTL

    “No complaints today.
“Effort was there but beaten by a much better team.”
At last a realistic point of view, without blaming players or the managers team selection.

  • magpiefifer

Problem is,effort alone will not keep us up!!!!

  • Soldier

I didn`t expect a result today and with Diame & Perez playing that was a certainty.

  • Peter

I have thought for quite a while now that the whole season hinges on whether new owners can come in with time to make substantial investment in January. Without it, the season will just be another long, grim relegation struggle.

  • Peaky Magpie

Would not be one bit surprised if Shelvey is away in January.

    • 1957

Shelvey, Mitrovic, Gayle, Darlow and Mbemba would be my guess, to be replaced by 6 or 7 journeyman, my big impression of Benitez is he favours quantity over quality.

In the summer Merino and Woodman (Freddie not wanting to be 3rd choice to a mid 30’s foreign keeper and Elliot) will go and Benitez will reach the end of August complaining about the amount new owners have allowed him to spend.

      • Peaky Magpie

You’re right and let’s not forget, and Liverpool supporters will agree,he signed some howlers at Anfield.

        • 1957

Yeah he was often criticised at Liverpool for buying poor quality ‘squad fillers’ rather than giving young players a chance and filling the youth team with young foreign players rather than promising local lads.

        • nevfur

If his howlers win us the champions league and FA Cup I’ll take it

          • Peaky Magpie

Without a doubt mate, what I supposed im trying to say is Rafa is no way above criticism, even Fergie made some really dodgy signings at Man Utd.

          • nevfur

True but I suppose all managers sign some donkeys. Certainly Keegan and Sir Bobby did. A lot depends on which market you are shopping in. Sadly at the moment Rafa is at the quayside market but is definitely a top manager and better than anyone else we could dream of getting

      • nevfur

Well certainly he has won a quantity of trophies in his career as our quality has produced er well em nowt

  • Leazes Ender

Its almost like he’s quoting me from last week….“It’s a Championship squad playing in the Premier League”.

Yes thats exactly what it is…. don’t get at the players…. they are what they are.

Ashley positioned his club at fifteenth for some crazy reason….why would you do that?

Don’t give me that nonsense about selling the club and finding it hard to shift players we have a full squad of players a new owner is going to find hard to shift… Joselu…what was that about?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Benitez shifts our better players in january judging by the treatment he’s dishing out…. is Rafa turning into the new Dalglish?

  • gallowgate26

Look, forget about today. This league now is like two mini-leagues. Only 35 points (not 40) will be needed to stay up this season. Leicester and Everton at home are two huge games for us. Traditionally good teams but NOT this season. As fans, players and manager we need to stand up and become UNITED. Fck Vardy, fck Rooney. UNITED.

  • Peaky Magpie

Almost half way through season and as expected the cream is starting to rise to the top with the usual suspects now firmly fixed in a relegation scrap.

    • nufcslf

Yes, a Leicester type repeat is sadly a hundred years away again. The no worse than 17th is already on for 9th down. Very sad.

  • Alreet

We stopped the rot against west brom but against the world class of hazard and morata there could only have been one outcome.

Al is right, champ squad in the prem. What can we do but try harder next time.

Not many teams beat chelsea on their own turf.

Next 2 games we have to get a few points on the board. We have to make our home games as winnable as possible.

We can do this. No doom and gloom.

  • Whitehurst

If only we had a Shearer upfront….we wouldn’t be talking about our currrent deficients!!
