Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy had a difference of opinion after the final whistle went on Newcastle 0 Everton 1.

The pair were working on the midweek Match of The Day and had plenty to say afterwards.

Danny Murphy said that Jonjo Shelvey should not have been sent off, saying that the tackle didn’t warrant a second yellow, plus the referee should have used ‘common sense’ with only a minute remaining.

Alan Shearer though was having none of it, insisting the Newcastle player was rightly sent off, with the midfielder now facing a two match ban.

However, you sensed that their disagreement was about more than just the sending off.

Alan Shearer had been confined to discussing Everton and Wayne Rooney, rather than how Newcastle played, and Danny Murphy added ‘He (Jonjo Shelvey) is unlucky, and Newcastle were unlucky, even though Alan was fuming.’

I think we can safely assume that Alan Shearer didn’t believe Newcastle United were unlucky and MOTD made the decision not to have him launching into the team he supports once again. Gary Lineker even commenting at one point ‘We’ll be having no rants tonight’.

I know how frustrated I felt inside St James Park as Newcastle looked clueless in that second half, never looking like scoring after the break, so you can just imagine Alan Shearer ‘fuming’ as he watched it on TV.

Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer talking on Match of The Day:

Danny Murphy:

“I don’t think it should be a red card (for Shelvey).

“That (the first one) is a yellow because he (Shelvey) is running back and trying to stop a breakaway. Lennon is too quick for him.

“Less than 60 seconds before the end and a genuine attempt to win the ball, the lad has rolled over 17 times.

“The referee has got no common sense – 45 seconds later he blows the final whistle.”

Alan Shearer:

“I would beg to differ on that because is there is a minute left, there would be uproar if a referee fails to send him off and then he gets up and scores the equaliser.”

Danny Murphy:

“It is a genuine attempt for the ball and no malice, nowhere near the goal.

“He (Jonjo Shelvey) is unlucky, and Newcastle were unlucky, even though Alan was fuming.

“Newcastle hit the woodwork twice and played ok.”

Alan Shearer:

“He is on a yellow card…whether the last minute of half an hour to go, you still can’t go in for a tackle that.”

    Murphy`s right

    • Dillon Tovak

      Murphy’s law.

  • TheFatController

You couldn’t possibly know what shearer thought of our performance.

You make a conclusion that he agrees with your view yet that conclusion is only your conjecture.

Danny Murphy mentions ‘fuming’ in the context of Shelvey being sent off, and you change the context to being related to our performance? A performance where the stats (you know, evidence) prove we were the better team.

I can’t agree with someone writing up such an unfounded conclusion about something they can’t possibly know, sorry.

    • Monkseaton Magpies

Shearer says we should have got beat every week regardless of performance no credit what’s so ever for the Watford game he said it should have been six nil did not see all the sitters we missed only there’s as he is a sad and bitter twisted man.

      • Dillon Tovak

We were really truly abysmal against Watford.
        Shockingly bad.

        • Monkseaton Magpies

Yes but a lot of pundits said it could have been a high scoring draw as we missed really easy chances and they missed a couple it was not one sided as we had as many chances as them Shearer is the only pundit who goes against Newcastle all the time what Murphy was saying was correct he was defending Newcastle on two fronts everyone knows we were unlucky not to win yet Lineker has to come him down for some one defending Newcastle he should be president of this site.

You mean the guy with no legs and no arms?

    • Rich Lawson

Give Woodman a game against Arsenal and watch the boy take his chance. Can’t be worse than Elliot and Darlow !

      • Viru leckworth

        Could do worse – have.

  • Leazes Ender

When was the last time an opposing player was sent off against us…. or we had a penalty?

Do these referees supplied by the London and Lancashire FA come to SJP with a certain mindset ‘I’m going to show that I’m not going to be swayed by the crowd’ and harshly penalise United….as a result of that.

I’ve been to Anfield many times during the 70s and you could bet your bottom dollar the refs were ‘homers’ for the Lancashire lads….

….. a perceived bias not ‘for any club in particular but against United specifically.

….The Biffa Bacon Family who sit close by certainly think so… ‘B*£&a$d Refs’

We haven’t deserved some of this referee treatment… we need a better squad because United will always be playing against 12 men.

We we lousy yesterday and deserved nothing.

    • Monkseaton Magpies

Think that’ s sixteen of our players sent off in a row without an opposition player sent off and when you consider Kane’s tackle and Cabaye’s it’ a joke but no doubt Shearer would approve all sixteen sending offs.
It’s the same story with penalties.

      • cmrowley

Honest question. Do you genuinely believe Alan Shearer is against Newcastle United? As in he wants them to fail and dislikes them?

        • Monkseaton Magpies

His summing up of the games this season has been worse than any other pundit this season for reasons I do not know but he is not telling the true picture after games everything is anti Newcastle never defends them like Murphy did twice. In fact anyone at the game last night would say they were unlucky but not Shearer.

          • cmrowley

Frustration as a Newcastle fan then perhaps? Rather than anti Newcastle? Frustration at 1 point from 24 and lack backing for the manager? Frustration at what appears to be a running of the club without any focus on the football?

That’s how I feel, and I love the club.

          • Buck Blacket

He absolutely hates Ashley for the disrespect during his short tenure as manager and rightly so. Whilst Ashley remains at the helm, expect more of the same.

  • El Greco

As an Evertonian I’m obviously pleased that we won, but the performance wasn’t up to much and Newcastle although hitting the woodwork from distance really didn’t threaten much. After the break it looked as though they were bereft of ideas. You need a proper No9 badly and the premier league need you to get one. Hopefully, if your club is sold Raffa will get the funding he so desperately needs and Newcastle will once again be a fearful place to go. Good luck for the rest of season.

    • TheNutJob

we`ve needed a number 9 for years, instead we buy fullbacks & midfielders

      • Dillon Tovak

        We need a new fullback.

  • Peaky Magpie

Nowt from next 3 games, bottom by January 1st,Happy New Year or what ?🤬🤬🤬

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Shearer does not watch the whole game just takes into account the final score the fact that we hit the inside of the post twice with the keeper well beaten does not count. Everton scored with a howler and were second best all night as we had the best of the other chances despite playing with ten mem most of the game as the eleventh just was not interested at all. Newcastle were streets a head of Everton all night yet Shearer would say something like could have been three nil to Everton they totally out classed Newcastle he is so anti Newcastle he only sees one team.
For the Watford game said it should have been six nil despite the fact we missed as many chances would ban him from St James’s

    • Damon Horner

He was talking about the red card being worthy of a second yellow, not the performance.

      • Cockneytrev

What’s that got to do with what I said ?

        • Damon Horner

Nothing mate. My comment was posted 4 hours before yours and directed at Monkseaton Magpie.

    • Cockneytrev

Don’t know what you are , but your not a Newcastle fan, ( I suspect an employee of Ashley, or Macam troll) shearer is one of the few pundits who actually sticks up for Newcastle and it’s fans, I constantly read your posts and along with a couple of others on here who see no wrong in Ashley you talk absolute nonsense, “Ban him from St James” I’ve never heard so much rubbish!!!!!!

      • Buck Blacket

I love Big Al as does every Toon fan but he does have a giant axe to grind with Ashley and probably rightly so. When we got relegated with Al at the helm, Ashley didn’t even ring him about staying on as the manager so while fatso is in charge, don’t expect a sympathetic spin on things from Shearer, certainly not towards Cashley.

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Believe me I am a Newcastle fan and Shearer is not helping the cause at all we were great the first few games and no credit and had even games where we just lost and comes out with statements should have lost six nil no credit for last night either he is a sad bitter twisted man. When he had the pleasure of being manager for eight games and won one against the Boro. He needed one point from the last two games against Fulham at home and Aston Villa away who did not try at all and played Damien Duff at full back who scored an own goal to send us down. He is a joke as a pundit and and a manager and needs to keep his mouth shut and back the club.

        • Cockneytrev

He is a Newcastle fan through and through,,,unlike anyone who thinks that Ashley has been anything other than a parasite to my club,,, the team we have now compared to when ashley took over is an utter joke,,
The fact you slag of Shearer and support anything proves my point,, your either a macam troll or in the employ of the owner,,,

      • Leazes Ender

Don’t read him…. I’ve blocked him along with his other names….. life is too short to kick the cockroaches.

        • Monkseaton Magpies

Block me if you want but you and others on here are very sad individuals.

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Shearer has a pop at Newcastle every time with his his quotes they should have been beaten six nil he hates Newcastle at least Murphy stuck up for us saying we were unlucky . The fact we hit the post twice means nothing to Shearer a sad bitter and twisted man.

        • Cockneytrev

Took you a week to think of that reply?
I reiterate what I first said, you talk nonsense,,
          Ban our greatest goal scorer,,,,,

  • mactoon

I don’t know what the fuss is all about, Shearer is spot on. Shelvey’s second tackle was a yellow card all day. Take a look at the highlights and you will see his foot is nowhere near the ball and takes the player down. Bloke’s an idiot

  • Arty Hume

Have to say Murphy is right on this one, I never thought this was a red card ( or second yellow ). Thought we made them look good, but we never looked like scoring apart from the long range great efforts which hit the woodwork. On a different matter you have to take your hat off to the parasite in London, his timing and business acumen is impeccable. Whoever says he knows nothing about football knows nothing about football. This parasitic businessman has asset stripped a once great club to the point where it is now a husk masquerading as a going concern, while at the same time has somehow managed to persuade a world class manager to oversee the remnants of journeymen who pro-port to be footballers and at the same time compel 52k supporters to attend the ground every other week. The piece de resistance is to finally put the whole shebang up for sale ( after having taken everything of value from it ) and even have a company paying over the odds for a championship club occupying a premiership birth. If it was not so sole destroying and happening to another club it would be laughable!
Just my humble opinion, if I was Ms Staveley I would walk away now as we are going down. Come back in the summer you will get the club for under £100m, it a championship club now albeit with a premiership ground ( nothing to do with Mash ) and a support second to non. If PCP buy now I think they will be making a mistake and the money saved could be put to better use later on as it is going to take an astonishing amount of money to rebuild the team. I am gutted this morning as I genuinely thought we could at least get a draw against Everton, but we were just ineffectual and lacked a cutting edge.

    • Dillon Tovak

Support are pretty sh|te if you ask me.
The speed of going from singing Rafas name to calling for his head is shameful.
Same people that called for Sir Bobby to be sacked.
In fact calling it support is a complete misrepresentation.

      • Arty Hume

I fully support Rafa but he has a very poor selection of players to choose from, courtesy of Mash. We are a championship team masquerading in the P.L because Mash has deprived our manager of the required funds to make our team competitive. Rafa has not ( contrary to popular belief ) been in charge of transfers, he has had to take what he was given like all the other’s, make no mistake about that! Do you think for one minute a manager like Rafa would take on Hoss or Dearme to name just two, it would never happen at most clubs, no Rafa has been conned and lied to since he came and has tried to make the best of it for the sake of the fans, and no doubt his own reputation. He was always onto a looser with the setup we have, time and again they have been shown to be liars and cheapskates. I would happily take relegation AGAIN if it got ride of the parasitic monster we have currently in charge. Just hope its all settled soon and we know where we are.

        • ash1001

How do you know who was in charge of transfers – guess work I presume. Whos in charge of not even including Mitrovic and M’bemba in the squad, presume its the same guy.

      • Buck Blacket

        Spot on mate!

      • Leazes Ender

        …. and Shelvey! unbelievable….

  • magpiefifer

We’ll be relegated, full stop. The damage done by Ashley during the Summer will hopefully be his last to our club..
New recruits in Jan won’t stem the flow,BUT I will accept being back in the Championship if that’s the price for getting rid of Ashley!
I look forward to returning to SJP after 8 years, even if it’s to watch Championship games – the reality of seeing the back of that man(?) will be wonderful!!!

    • Dillon Tovak

You may be right, West Ham and Everton spent a fortune and it’s taken until now for them to look relatively ok.
We can sign a few players but it might be late April when the team settles.

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Everton were awful and caused very few problems and got a very good chance of winning down there. Rooney only scored because the keeper dropped the ball could have played till Christmas and they would not have scored whereas we should have had three first half but for bad luck two hitting the post and one going in but hit their player.

      • ash1001

Not having a go at Benitiz before anybody jumps on the band wagon, but he did spend £36 million in the summer, and maybe he should just stop been so childish with Mitrovic and M’Bemba, they have to be better than whats out there, plus maybe we should have held on to the likes of Thauvin and De Jong.

    • Arty Hume

Agree mate, just hope PCP adjust their offer for the club as Mash has left it a husk, will take megga money to e build.

  • robbersdog

Danny Murphy is quite right; it was a robust, but fair tackle, the Everton player made a big meal of it (ie, he conned the ref) and I thought the booking/sending off was unnecessary and spiteful.

We’re not getting the breaks at the moment (if Gayle’s perfectly good goal against Bournemouth had not been disallowed, I reckon we’d have won that match), but there’s a long way to go, we’re not in the bottom 3 and we might see the back of Ashley before too long. We can be cautiously optimistic!

    • ash1001

it was Martin Atkinson after all, so he would be waiting for the chance, he’s so arrogant.

  • East Durham Mag

Shearer made some pretty unsavoury tackles and got away with a lot. He was a superb striker but was robust in his style of play or has he forgotten it?

  • John Williams

Agree with AS. tell me if that was in the box a penalty would not of been given and a second yellow. We did nowt up top except a few long range shots that hit the post.
Second half was worse too slow breaking from defending to attacking.
By the time we win the ball in defense make 1 pass then look to pass to shelvey to play a long ball there defense and mids are back and our players are still running out of defensive positions, all too slow and predictable. Need some direct skillful cutting edge players eg 2 midfielders and 2 forwards…Showe Raffa the money Lol

  • Viru leckworth

From what I saw at st jimmys last night, we played some good stuff for the first twenty minutes, then we started to run out of ideas when fortune turned against us. The second half was abysmal with Everton just spoiling a game of football.
Ashley has sh?t on his chips with his meanness in the summer. For someone who is supposed to be a high flying businessman, his decisions on the running of the football club completely baffle.

  • Andynufc

Funny how MOTD missed Rooney’s elbow on Matt Richie which was right infront of the Ref.

    • Leazes Ender

Another instance of Refereeing bias working in conjunction with MOTD…. mnd you they put us in the same box as Brighton and Barnsley marked ‘cannon fodder’ … it doesn’t matter unless you are one of the favoured clubs.
