Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy argue after Newcastle 0 Everton 1

Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy had a difference of opinion after the final whistle went on Newcastle 0 Everton 1.

The pair were working on the midweek Match of The Day and had plenty to say afterwards.

Danny Murphy said that Jonjo Shelvey should not have been sent off, saying that the tackle didn’t warrant a second yellow, plus the referee should have used ‘common sense’ with only a minute remaining.

Alan Shearer though was having none of it, insisting the Newcastle player was rightly sent off, with the midfielder now facing a two match ban.

However, you sensed that their disagreement was about more than just the sending off.

Alan Shearer had been confined to discussing Everton and Wayne Rooney, rather than how Newcastle played, and Danny Murphy added ‘He (Jonjo Shelvey) is unlucky, and Newcastle were unlucky, even though Alan was fuming.’

I think we can safely assume that Alan Shearer didn’t believe Newcastle United were unlucky and MOTD made the decision not to have him launching into the team he supports once again. Gary Lineker even commenting at one point ‘We’ll be having no rants tonight’.

I know how frustrated I felt inside St James Park as Newcastle looked clueless in that second half, never looking like scoring after the break, so you can just imagine Alan Shearer ‘fuming’ as he watched it on TV.

Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer talking on Match of The Day:

Danny Murphy:

“I don’t think it should be a red card (for Shelvey).

“That (the first one) is a yellow because he (Shelvey) is running back and trying to stop a breakaway. Lennon is too quick for him.

“Less than 60 seconds before the end and a genuine attempt to win the ball, the lad has rolled over 17 times.

“The referee has got no common sense – 45 seconds later he blows the final whistle.”

Alan Shearer:

“I would beg to differ on that because is there is a minute left, there would be uproar if a referee fails to send him off and then he gets up and scores the equaliser.”

Danny Murphy:

“It is a genuine attempt for the ball and no malice, nowhere near the goal.

“He (Jonjo Shelvey) is unlucky, and Newcastle were unlucky, even though Alan was fuming.

“Newcastle hit the woodwork twice and played ok.”

Alan Shearer:

“He is on a yellow card…whether the last minute of half an hour to go, you still can’t go in for a tackle that.”
