£6m offer goes in for Newcastle linked Richmond Boakye

Monday brought news of supposed Newcastle interest in Richmond Boakye.

ESPN reported (see below) that ‘sources close to the player’ had revealed that Newcastle wanted to buy the Ghanaian international striker.

Now Het Niuewsblad are reporting that Rennes have made an offer of £6m for the striker, the first of many interested clubs to break cover and put a bid in.

They say that this has helped put an end to Anderlecht interest in the forward but that clubs from both China and England are still bidding to buy the striker in January.

Richmond Boakye has had a host of clubs despite only being 24 and had scored only 13 goals in 93 league appearances in the three and a half years before his move to Red Star Belgrade. The striker mainly playing in the Italian second tier.

He joined Red Star on a free transfer this summer and has found the weak Serbian league to his liking. Scoring 38 goals in 47 appearances since January 2017.

He clearly looks better than that level of football but the question is whether he can now at last make it in the top tier of a major European league.

It looks clear that Red Star Belgrade are going to make a very nice and quick transfer profit but could Newcastle be a potential destination?

The Mag – 11 December 2017:

Newcastle have registered their interest in buying Richmond Boakye in January, according to reports on Monday morning.

ESPN say that they have been told by ‘sources close to the player’ that Newcastle want to buy the Ghanaian striker.

An international teammate of Christian Atsu, the 24 year old striker has already had eight clubs.

He has been on the books of Serie A clubs Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta but almost all of his football has been played in the second tier of Italian football with Sassuolo and Latina.

He also had brief spells on loan at both Spanish side Elche and Dutch club Roda.

He has now ended up in Serbian football with Red Star Belgrade and 14 goals in 10 league starts (plus 3 off the bench) has helped his club top the table by nine points from Mitrovic’ former club Partizan.

This followed 12 goals in 14 starts (plus 2 as sub) when first on loan at Red Star in the second half of last season.

Richmond Boakye eventually moved on a free this summer from Latina, the striker playing the first half of last season for the Serie B club, scoring three goals in 16 league appearances, before being allowed to move on to Serbian football. Latina finished the season rock bottom of Serie B and dropped into the third tier of Italian football.

Newcastle United, like pretty much every club, are always looking for strikers in weaker league who may be able to step up to the Premier League, but it would be some journey if Boakye proved himself good enough for the Premier League.

ESPN say that West Brom have also registered an interest in the striker but scoring goals with a dominant Red Star Belgrade is a million miles away from doing it in the English top tier.

The forward’s overall profile suggests he would be a major gamble but then we all wonder exactly how much money, if any, Rafa Benitez will be backed with when the transfer window opens in exactly three weeks time.

He scored a career record 11 league goals in 32 appearances for Sassuolo in 2012/13 in the Italian second tier but in the three and a half years that followed, he managed only 13 league goals in 93 league appearances for four different clubs, before that move to Serbia.

Whatever budget Rafa Benitez does get, you would imagine Newcastle could afford a player such as Richmond Boakye, but the big question is whether he could score goals in the Premier League.
