No secret that an overwhelming number of Newcastle fans believe they are lucky to have Rafa Benitez.

However, this latest Premier League statistic is scarcely believable.

It relates to Saturday home matches in the Premier League, whilst Rafa has managed Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle.

Of the last 58 Premier League games that Rafa Benitez as taken charge of on a Saturday, he has a record of won 47, drawn 10, lost one.

The only loss in that time was 1-0 defeat by Man Utd in March 2007.

That is a little bit mad.

So far at Newcastle, the Spaniard has taken charge of five Saturday home Premier League games:

Newcastle 3 Swansea 0

Newcastle 1 Crystal Palace 0

Newcastle 3 West Ham 0

Newcastle 2 Stoke 1

Newcastle 1 Crystal Palace 0

At the moment, the official Premier League site reports that Rafa Benitez is currently on a run of 31 Saturday PL home matches without a defeat, over 10 years since that Man Utd loss.

Fair to say that Rafa had better teams at both Liverpool and Chelsea than he has currently at Newcastle but it does suggest that his famously meticulous planning, is perfectly suited to matches at home in the standard Saturday slot.

With those five out of five wins so far at St James Park, hopefully Rafa Benitez can make it six out of six against Bournemouth.

It would be some achievement if he could at least keep this home Saturday run going this season in terms of being undefeated, after Bournemouth, the Watford and Leicester games are guaranteed to be on Saturdays, with then further matches depending on TV scheduling.

I think Rafa needs to freshen up the team on Saturday, either Clark or Mbemba at left back, Mitrovic as the striker. also Hayden must start & if he`s fit Merino as well.
i`d bench Joselu, Diame & Perez

As much as I love Rafa I feel he’s been his own worst enemy as far as Mitro is concerned. If he plays him he’ll be so fired up and probably get sent off ! I would still play him though and definitely agree about left back.

the comment below isnt far off the mark, or would you go with the same 11 again against Bournemouth

  • Dillon Tovak

I think it shows statistics can mean nothing and that’s a coincidence, helped along by the fact Rafa is a great manager.
