West Brom 2 Newcastle 2 – Tuesday 28 November 2017 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Ben Cooper:

“Brilliant last half hour.

“The spirit, the effort, forget about the first bit, I have.

“On the whole, we know that our 5 or 6 good players have to play well and the rest have to muck in and that’s what I saw towards the end.

“And perhaps now Mitro has shown that he is worth a go.

“Rafa should be happy with that, players wanting to come on and make a difference.

“West Brom were hopeless as well.”

Toon Bano:

“So I knew this before kick off but hopefully Rafa finally realises which option he must choose from now on, with his limited squad he insists on moaning about.

“Mitro HAS to start over Joselu.

“Mbemba was our best defender, HAS to play.

“Shelvey HAS to play no matter what.

“Aarons is a better option than Murphy all day long and HAS to play from now on.

“I don’t care that we missed out on Tammy Abraham and Willy Cabellaro. What I do care is our best players on the pitch.

“Look what happened when they were!!!!

“Turned around a 2 goal deficit. Imagine playing from the start 0-0??!!

“Sort it.”

Paul Lyon:

“Would have been happy with a hard fought solid 0-0 and absolutely delighted had we managed to somehow nick it 1-0 before the game, after recent leaky performances.

“Thought the worst when we went 1-0 down then pretty much accepted that our defensive slips had cost us yet again at 2-0 but this is NUFC we’re talking about…

“Great reaction to get the goal so soon after conceding, felt the way we played deserved something from the game so to get the equaliser was excellent.

“Thought Aarons was a handful when he came on, hopefully we’ll see a bit more of that in the busy schedule ahead.

“Happy with the point and performance, if only we could cut out the mistakes we’ll start taking more points more regularly.”

Jamie Swan:

“Someone prepare big Lascelles a mobility scooter to get him back on the pitch asap – never a bigger gap witnessed since he limped off.

“Clark got a good headed goal at a desperate time which kickstarted the comeback after looking like drowning in brown and sticky again.

“Big changes to the team and Rafa needs to use this as a baby step back to form. If we can start defending again we will keep picking up points.

“For all the changes Joselu still remains in situ. Quite bizarre. Could have lost, in the end could have won. Should Jonjo have came on sooner?

“However, let’s regroup, take the point and take stock.

“Then get on your knees and clasp hands in prayer that Ashley takes the offer and returns back to whichever military laboratory his particular germ was created.”

David Punton:

“The team showing some character tonight to battle back for a point from 2-0 down.

“The manager opting for five changes but persisting with Joselu up front.

“The figure of Mitrovic emerging from the bench.

“The point is welcome after the recent run, though some very hard games lie in wait.

“The fume at conceding the opener just ten seconds from half time was palpable.

“Benitez will be relieved with a point on the road and on a freezing cold night at the Hawthorns.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“That reaction showed real character. Might sound obvious but its true.

“I thought at half time whatever happened result wise we needed a second half performance and got one.

“We desperately need either Lejeune to regain confidence  or Lascelles to come back in.

“Also, why has Yedlin suddenly turned into a championship right back over the last three games?

“A good point though and it was good to see the subs make an impact.

“Just need someone to tell Aarrons to to release the ball and he’s away.”

Nat Seaton:

“I’m going to focus on the positives… we came back from two goals down away from home!!!

 “I celebrated the own goal like I haven’t done for a while…

“I’ll take the point but I’m not too hopeful of us getting anything on Saturday and I’ll then be looking at the other results over the weekend to see where the land lies before the rest of our tough December.”

Paul Patterson:

“So why didn’t the team that finished the game, start Rafa?

“Seriously!”
