Tuesday night saw a dismal performance from the young Newcastle United stars.

Needing to win against League One outfit Oldham, instead they found themselves on the end of a hammering.

The game ended 4-1 but watching the highlights below, it could have been far far worse. The woodwork and Nathan Harker in the Newcastle goal keeping the scoreline almost respectable.

The defeat means that Newcastle exit the Checkatrade Trophy at the first attempt, with Port Vale and Oldham progressing from the group.

On a wider point, serious questions surely need to be asked of Peter Beardsley and the reserve team set-up, with only one win since August and that came against dubious quality of a visiting Slavia Prague young team in the Premier League International Cup.

The reserves have now lost all of their last seven games in domestic competitions, including conceding 18 goals in only the last four of those.

Rafa Benitez can only do so much in the short time he has had at the club so far but surely there has to be the major investment in the Academy, and state of the art new training complex, which were promised years ago by Mike Ashley, to allow Rafa to take the club forward.

The only very small consolation last night was a rare headed goal from Rolando Aaron, left totally unmarked on a corner – watch it below.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

It is indictative of Mike Ashley’s regime at Newcastle and it’s failures since his involvement.
Peter Beardsley was kicked out of Newcastle United for not doing a decent job years ago and rightly so.
As soon as Ashley took over they brought him back and what you are seeing is disastrous results across the board and abject failure !
The man was no good the first time around, So it’s no wonder you now get all the fawning and crawling around Ashley because he would be nowhere near this club otherwise.

This might not be popular with some given his standing as a player but he has been terrible as a coach and has no right being there !

    • Down Under Mag

Plenty of top players fail as a coach/manager…the only reason he still has a job is because he is a legend of the club, sucks up to Ashley and it is youth team level so doesn’t attract enough criticism. If he was in charge of a senior team he would have been sacked years ago. I don’t see why we shouldn’t be expecting more out of our academy.

I see Shola has been inducted into the United hall of fame….. we have a different definition of fame from the dictionary obviously.

  • Peaky Magpie

Neither Beardsley or Moncur will come out of the Ashley era with any credit in my eyes I’m afraid.

  • Down Under Mag

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, Pedro was an amazing player but he seriously needs to get moved on from the youth setup as he is clearly not doing his job. That’s no shame, it doesn’t diminish him as a player BUT the club needs to start and get more out of it’s youth players. While I understand at this level it isn’t just about results, it IS about bringing youth players through and to be honest we aren’t doing that properly either right now. I can’t help but get the feeling that players are more left to develop on their own and anyone who comes through is more by the players own skill rather than anythign our coachign staff are doing to aid their development. This is one aspect of the club that desperately needs an overhaul.
