Sky Sports: Gary Megson takes charge v Newcastle but Alan Pardew expected to be named before kick-off
Newcastle United head to the Hawthorns on Tuesday night and what a pivotal match it threatens to be.
A loss would make it five defeats in a row, whereas a win would put Newcastle on 17 points after 14 matches and looking in a very decent position, guaranteed to be six points ahead of fourth bottom West Brom and potentially seven points ahead of the bottom three.
The sacking of Tony Pulis has ensured that this game takes on even greater significance and West Brom fans will understandably also be hoping for their first win since August, picking up some much needed confidence from Saturday’s draw away at Spurs.
If anything else was needed to be added to the mix, Sunday morning saw Alan Pardew admit (see below) at last that he has had talks with West Brom. These talks were reported throughout last week amid claims that he was the only candidate being interviewed.
Now Sunday night has seen Sky Sports report that their information is that regardless of anything, Gary Megson will take charge of the team for Tuesday night, though they expect Alan Pardew to be officially announced as the new West Brom manager before that game against Newcastle.
The bookies also see Pardew’s appointment as a bit of a foregone conclusion, pricing him as 1/6 odds on favourite (see full betting below)
This week we published what West Brom fans were saying about the seemingly certain Alan Pardew appointment and many of them were less than excited about the possibility (read them HERE).
Alan Pardew talking to Sky Sports:
“I have had discussions with them (West Brom) and obviously it is an attractive job, so we will see where it goes.
“I think it is a club who have a really good set of players and I think it is a good opportunity for a manager.
“If it’s me, it’s me.
“I think they’ve got good quality in there and maybe they should be doing slightly better than they are.
“I think looking at them and the depth of their squad, I think it has definitely got improvement in there.”
