Steve McClaren is the surprise choice to succeed Pedro Caixinha at Rangers according to reports on Saturday.

The Glasgow club are taking their time in appointing a new manager and current Aberdeen boss, Derek McInnes, remains the odds-on favourite.

However, today The Times report that the Rangers Director of Football, Mark Allen, has made Steve McClaren his first choice to take the post.

Tough times for Rangers as they have just announced a £6.7m loss, almost half of that due to Mike Ashley demanding £3m in return for Sports Direct ripping up the crippling retail deals.

Steve McClaren somehow found his way  into a job back at Derby after Newcastle sacked him, before then they once again dispensed with his services.

McClaren is currently assisting manager Jordi Cruyff at Maccabi Tel Aviv as a coaching consultant.
