Sunday morning reports claim that Rafa Benitez is looking to sign Fernando Torres in January.

The striker has been very much a fringe player for Atletico Madrid this season, starting only one La Liga match and playing only 182 minutes of league football in total.

It was Rafa Benitez of course who took Fernando Torres to Liverpool in 2007, paying £26m to Atletico Madrid to buy the forward.

Torres scored a remarkable 56 goals in 69 Premier League starts (plus 10 as a sub) under Benitez at Liverpool.

It was after Rafa left Anfield that Fernando Torres then forced through a move to Chelsea, his £50m fee helping to finance the £35m move for Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

This morning’s report comes from The Mirror and they claim that as well as Newcastle/Rafa wanting Torres on loan in January, Southampton also are interested.

Newcastle definitely need extra goals from somewhere but at 33, would Fernando Torres be the answer?

Since parting ways with Rafa Benitez, the following seven seasons saw 11 goals being the best league return for Torres, that coming in 2015/16.

In his limited time on the pitch so far this campaign, the Atletico Madrid forward has failed to score so far in all competitions.

Not sure what to think about this one, he was undeniably excellent under Rafa Benitez, but could Fernando Torres do a job now in the Premier League…if there is genuine interest from Rafa/Newcastle?

  • Jonathan Gibson

Improvement on anything we have at the moment..

  • Mitros gotta start

No thanks… too many spaniards in the team already

    • pedrodelgardo

What’s that got to do with anything?, the players contribution is important not where they come from.

    • Leazes Ender

Too many Serbs if you ask me.

  • Toon Fan

Fantastic player in his day. Look at his recent goal record though, he’s finished..

  • Geordiegiants

Not good, if we are being linked to him, we are looking at Jabba still being here.

  • Mike

    33 years old………….nope

  • Awaymag

I can see big Andy and Fernando upfront for the back end of the season 👍

    • Steven05

I don’t think think there’s anything in this (or any other targets the media ‘know’ about

But out of curiosity – who would the fans prefer given the choice – Torres or Carroll? (and please don’t answer ‘neither’!)

      • Awaymag

Both unlikely (we will always be linked with Carrol as long as he can kick a ball) I would be happy to see Torres because I prefer a forward playing the ball instead of a big lump trying to hold the ball up

      • Gallowgate Dave

Might as well ask if you want herpes or the clap. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve read that Joselu has never reached double figures for goals in a season in his career, well neither has Andy Carroll since leaving us. It’s a shame for him given his undoubted ability that he’s been blighted with injuries but at 28 that’s not going to suddenly improve. No point bringing him back out of sentimentality. Torres recent record is even worse, he’s 33 and he’s been on a spectacular downward trajectory since Liverpool, I can’t remember a faster fall from grace from such a height. Both would be daft signings especially on the money they’d ask for.

        • Steven05

Fair points. I guess if Carroll could stay fit, he would be too good for us anyway

      • Stephen Paylor

        Carroll by million miles

  • HarryHype59

Surely this is just more tabloid tripe?

If true, we are shopping in the bargain basement bins again!

  • Leazes Ender

    33 years old
    Hasn’t completed 90 mins for a year.
8 goals in league in last 2 years makes Shola look prolific.
He’s looking for a last payday in China.
    Fake news.

    Any questions?

  • Viru leckworth

Paper talk. He has done very little since leaving Liverpool.

  • BillytheFish

    Agent talk…..

  • StevieB

Not what I would say is Plan A but if I asked you would you take a punt on a Torres reunited with clearly his favourite manager or do another 5 months with Joselu ….would you still say no to Torres??

    • Rich Lawson

My head says he is past it,but looking at Joselu my heart says I would be at the airport waving a scarf to say welcome to Newcastle.

  • StevieB

That Kieran Gibbs slip up in August was a shocker by the way whoever’s fault that was !!! Albeit Rafas or Charnley….5m for a young England solid left back who ended up going to effing West Brom !! and we ended up scratting about for Manquillo 🙄
Where were we when Gibbs agent was punting him about 🤔🤔

    • Down Under Mag

My guess is he would have cost more in wages which is why we went for a no doubt cheaper option…

      • Oooh bobbi fleckman

His wages at Arsenal were astronomical, also he’s not exactly pulling up trees at WBA.

  • 1957

33 years old, no goals in 9 or 10 appearances this season I think and not first choice striker. I wouldn’t take him even on loan, sadly I doubt he would be an improvement on the 3 we already have.

  • anyobrien

    I’ll drive him here…. Lmfao

  • Albert Stubbins

Remember when dalglish brought back a certain Ian rush ten years too late? Not for me thanks.

    • Geordiegiants

      Along with Barnes and Pearce.

      • Oooh bobbi fleckman

        KK bought in Pearce

        • Geordiegiants

He did yes. Sorry I’m not Clarko, I do this all from memory, I never check up dates, times and places. I can’t be arsd.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

I do it all from memory too, however, when you have your facts wrong, it’s worth being corrected in order to re-appraise your position.

In this case, the signing of Stuart Pearce is unlikely to dampen the reputation of KK (Pearce actually performed well when called upon) nor will it excuse Daglish for making a sows ear out of a silk purse.

KK obviously rated Pearce’s influence as he appointed him as his assistant at City.

  • Paul Patterson

Is he better than what we have? If the concensus is yes then it’s a no-brainer.

  • isitjustme?

The fact that this has come out at a time when we don’t even know who’s gonna be in charge for the next window just proves how ridiculous transfer speculation is

    official media partner?

  • Down Under Mag

As much as I don’t believe a word of this as with 99% of articles about NUFC (even more so during an international break), I think he wouldn’t be anywhere near a decent signing for us. He lost his pace by the time he left to Chelsea and even then relied on a through-ball philosophy…having said that we do have the perfect foil for a player like Toerres in Shelvey. Anyway…next! lol

  • Steve Pearce

The only person who believes this utter shyte is Graham Porter….

  • S.G.M.

    Porter Pap.

  • MadMag83

Still a decent player but it would have to be purely as back up with a younger big signing coming in as first choice when Mitrovic and Gayle leave in January.
