Rafa Benitez wants to land Fernando Torres in January – Report

Sunday morning reports claim that Rafa Benitez is looking to sign Fernando Torres in January.

The striker has been very much a fringe player for Atletico Madrid this season, starting only one La Liga match and playing only 182 minutes of league football in total.

It was Rafa Benitez of course who took Fernando Torres to Liverpool in 2007, paying £26m to Atletico Madrid to buy the forward.

Torres scored a remarkable 56 goals in 69 Premier League starts (plus 10 as a sub) under Benitez at Liverpool.

It was after Rafa left Anfield that Fernando Torres then forced through a move to Chelsea, his £50m fee helping to finance the £35m move for Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

This morning’s report comes from The Mirror and they claim that as well as Newcastle/Rafa wanting Torres on loan in January, Southampton also are interested.

Newcastle definitely need extra goals from somewhere but at 33, would Fernando Torres be the answer?

Since parting ways with Rafa Benitez, the following seven seasons saw 11 goals being the best league return for Torres, that coming in 2015/16.

In his limited time on the pitch so far this campaign, the Atletico Madrid forward has failed to score so far in all competitions.

Not sure what to think about this one, he was undeniably excellent under Rafa Benitez, but could Fernando Torres do a job now in the Premier League…if there is genuine interest from Rafa/Newcastle?
