Monday’s defeat at Burnley knocked Newcastle a few places down the league table and it is a similar story with the Premier League recent form table.
Rafa’s team went into the game at Turf Moor with the fifth best form over the previous half dozen matches, at that point Newcastle had three wins, two draws and one defeat in their last six games.
Now though the loss at Burnley has replaced the win at Swansea and that gives a recent form of two wins, two draws and two defeats, those results not surprisingly putting Newcastle at halfway in 10th position, one lower than the full Premier League table.
Saturday’s opponents are 10 places lower in the Premier League table at the minute but only two lower in this form table.
They have two wins, one draw, and three defeats, giving them seven points from the last 18.
This actually presents something of a recovery as Eddie Howe’s team had a nightmare start, losing their first four Premier League matches.
They have managed to climb above Crystal Palace but even at this stage this could be a very very good game for Newcastle to win. A victory would put Newcastle 10 points clear of Bournemouth at this early stage and with Palace on only four points at the moment, it already opens up a reassuring gap to at least two clubs, with safety being the first target for Rafa Benitez.
Of course defeat would see the gap close to only four points and Newcastle in danger of being dragged into the pack of teams at the bottom/middle, a win tomorrow though would then ensure travelling to Old Trafford in the next game knowing that a top half of the table spot would almost certainly still be the case, no matter what happens against Jose Mourinho’s team.
Here is the Premier League form table which covers the past six matches for all teams:
