Peter Crouch on verge of taking proud Shola Ameobi Premier League record

Peter Crouch is closing in on Shola Ameobi.

The Stoke City striker having now matched the former Newcastle forward’s record and set to overtake it after the international break.

We are of course talking about Premier League super subs.

When Peter Crouch took the field against Leicester on Saturday, it was his seventh sub appearance of the season.

It took him to 142 Premier League games coming off the bench, matching Shola Ameobi’s record built up over many years at Newcastle.

Crouchy isn’t the most attractive striker but fair play to him, he turns 37 in January but he has been vital to Stoke this season.

They have 12 points and five of them are directly down to Peter Crouch.

He hasn’t started any Premier League matches this season but has played 153 minutes in seven sub appearances, scoring three goals at a rate of one every 51 minutes. Those three goals snatching two draws (v Leicester and West Brom) and a winner against Southampton.

The excellent Martin Tyler has put the stats together for Sky Sports and the top 10 super subs are listed below.

There is actually another real live threat to Shola and Crouchy’s record, as currently third in the list is Jermain Defoe.

When he came on at St James Park on Saturday it was his fourth league sub appearance of the season and that puts him on 136, six behind the top two.

Some other interesting names making up the top 10, though not much chance of the current 10th placed candidate adding to his record, ever.

Top 10 Premier League players – sub appearances:

142 Shola Ameobi

142 Peter Crouch

136 Jermain Defoe

129 Carlton Cole

123 Joe Cole

118 Kanu

110 James Milner

110 Ryan Giggs

107 Victor Anichebe

105 Adam Johnson
