Paul Merson questions Rafa Benitez on Mitrovic

Paul Merson has been talking about the Newcastle v Watford match on Saturday.

After losing three games in a row, the Hornets got back on track with a 2-0 home win over David Moyes and West Ham on Sunday.

Marco Silva looks a star of the future and he has Watford playing some very exciting open football.

Backed in the summer, amongst Silva’s buys were front pair Richarlison and Andre Gray costing a combined £30m.

Both strikers have a lot of pace and with an attacking midfield set-up, it means goals are all but inevitable.

Their 12 matches have produced 40 goals which is only bettered by Manchester City and Liverpool, Watford scoring 19 of them and the opposition 21.

Rafa Benitez was forced to shop further down the food chain and with Dwight Gayle’s injury problems, he was forced to bring in Stoke City reserve Joselu for £5m because he was desperate not to have to play Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Paul Merson questions why the Serbian has had no Premier League starts and only 49 minutes of league football this season.

With Dwight Gayle now fully fit and showing signs against Bournemouth and Man Utd that he can do it in the top tier, Merson thinks Mitro should play alongside Gayle rather than Joselu, as he (Gayle) ‘needs someone beside him to bully people’.

A tough game where Newcastle seem certain to have to score goals if they are to take anything, however, Paul Merson predicts the Magpies to only get one goal in a 2-1 home defeat.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“I fancy Watford to win this.

“I watched Newcastle v Bournemouth the other week at St James’, Bournemouth had some really good chances in that game, and I think Watford are a better side than Bournemouth.

“I don’t really see much up front for Newcastle.

“I’m not sure why Rafa Benitez doesn’t play Mitrovic more. He’s a presence and can put himself about.

“I think Dwight Gayle maybe needs someone beside him to bully people, and then hit them with his pace.

“Prediction is Newcastle 1 Watford 2.”
