Paul Merson doubles up on one-trick pony Newcastle United

Paul Merson says he was ‘really disappointed’ with Newcastle United on Monday night.

In what was always going to be a tough game against a resolute Burnley side, Paul Merson had predicted a win for Rafa’s team for the first time this season.

It was a game that was always likely to be decided by a single goal, the home side getting it with 16 minutes to go.

Newcastle had been zero threat before that and despite having a little bit of a go when falling behind, rarely looked like equalising.

Despite seeing his forecast fall flat, Paul Merson is back for more.

Once again he has gone for a Newcastle win and has chosen the Magpies despite Bournemouth winning their last away game 2-1 at Stoke, before going down 1-0 at home to Bournemouth last weekend.

In these last two matches against Palace and Bournemouth, Newcastle have offered very little going forward.

Paul Merson says that he thought Newcastle’s ‘only plan’ in terms of attacking was Jonjo Shelvey.

At home to Bournemouth, Newcastle fans will hope for and expect a lot more when it comes to getting at the opposition, three points that would get United right back on track in what was always going to be a difficult season.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“I was really disappointed with Newcastle on Monday night (losing 1-0 at Burnley).

“If I’m being honest, the only plan they looked like having was Jonjo Shelvey.

“It was a game you thought, ‘go and try and win here and kick on’, but it did not look good to me.

“Bournemouth got a good result at Stoke but I am going to go 2-1 to Newcastle.”
