Each player marked out of 10 and the averages below.

It would be difficult to argue that there was any Newcastle United man of the match on Saturday.

However, fair play to Jacob Murphy who has gone from looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights, to a player who showed a but at Old Trafford last Saturday, then was Newcastle’s top performer against Watford.

Murphy (5.6) getting the highest fan rating after taking on a lot more responsibility to try and do something against the Hornets, compared to those around him.

Elsewhere it was pretty bleak and actually the next two highest were substitutes Merino (4.8) and Mitrovic (4.4), neither of who were brilliant when they came on – but maybe a slight improvement on what had gone before.

As for the starting eleven, only two other players even got 4.0 or better, with Ciaran Clark (4.1) trying to hold it together at the back and Jonjo Shelvey (4.2) having the odd moment in midfield.

At the other end of the spectrum there were plenty of candidates for but supporters, two in particular stood out.

Joselu (1.9) was rock bottom, whilst Mohamed Diame (2.7) was abysmal in midfield when getting his chance.

After that, Manquillo (3.0) was third worst and the rest all registered not much better.

Newcastle’s normally reliable right hand side was exposed by Watford’s quality, with Yedlin (3.1) and Ritchie (3.6) struggling badly.

Gayle (3.7) faded after a bright start, whilst Lejeune (3.7) and Elliot (3.8) were culpable at the back as the defence fell apart. Perez (3.1) showing absolutely zero when coming off the bench.

Not a day anybody will want to remember, whether playing or watching it.

  • Paul Patterson

Can’t argue to be honest. I sat through that shambles . .

  • Wor Lass

I know Rafa really has been shackled due to a lack of financial backing this summer but his sheer obstinacy re selecting certain players is becoming a sick joke. I rate Rafa and you always have to defer to the pros` superior knowledge of the game and the players but enough`s enough. The old saying goes, “If it ain`t broken don`t fix it” – well we`re absolutely kn*ckered. If he starts Joselu over Mitro in the next game and puts deadbeats like Slomo ahead of Mbemba then he`s completely lost the plot or he`s trying to get Fatty to sack him and pay out compo. Either that or he`s got some sort of percentage deal with Amanda Staveley based on how much he can drive the price down for her. I`m pleased that Murphy has had a couple of games to bed himself in and build up a bit of confidence – maybe a little run could be a good idea for Mitro as well. The other thing that may be dawning on people now is how important Laascelles has become to the team. Without his leadership we`re a shambles.

  • Rafa is clearly showing the fans and owner that we can’t play open football, not enough quality in the team.
With Atsu and Murphy on both wings and Perez in the Center next to Gayle it could work, but our defending is absolutely shocking.
Yedlin and Manquillo are just not good enough, Ritchie is having an off spell, Shelvey never tracks back(or those a horrible job at it)
    Come January we must 1st:
Sell, Shelvey, Diame and Mitrovic/Joselu (showed he’s no better than Joselu, especially at finishing and why Rafa is not keen on starting him)
Total funds should be around 20m at least from those sales
Sign two new fullbacks proper fullbacks, sign a holding and passing CM
Sign at least one more winger
Sign a better striker than Joselu and Mitro.
Budget 30-35m+those from selling Shelvey, Diame, Mitro/Joselu

    • Jezza

“Sign a better striker than Joselu and Mitro.”

How’s about a wet match and a Nottinghamshire miner.

  • Antenociticus

Watford were faster, fitter and stronger in every position.
Rafa and his coaching team need to look at some basics: our players were slower to every ball, they were too easily bundled off the ball and they were knackered in the second half.
We’ve only played a third of the season, players should still be going after 90 minutes, not be run ragged.

    • Dillon Tovak

And never ever are there decent passing options.
I hated Pardew as manager, but that season we finished fifth we always created triangles, giving a choice of who to pass to. Now there’s no one showing for the ball, unless it’s backwards.
The players look shyte scared of the ball.

  • Philippines

Sat watching the match in the Philippines at 11 p.m. The only good thing was that when the third goal went in, I switched off and got an early night. Horrible does not describe it adequately.

  • Tino o

If a score of one is the minimum that can be awarded htf did tosselu get 1.9 ?

    • Tino o

      Someone has been generous

      • Rich Lawson

Does he vote on here himself then ?

        • Tino o

His mother would be the only one to award him more than the minimum

    • Jezza

A minimum of one is too generous. After that debacle there should be the option of giving them a zero.

      • Tino o

Or in some cases a minus score
