Newcastle player voted Captain in Malaga’s greatest ever team

Jesus Gamez was signed by Rafa Benitez on a two year deal in summer 2016.

The then 31 year old brought in to add experience to a Newcastle squad that had lost a number of established players.

Injuries did affect his year in the Championship but even when fit he struggled to get a game, starting only two second tier matches and coming off the bench in three others.

This season, Jesus Gamez has been given only 97 Premier League minutes by Rafa Benitez, starting at left-back in the 1-0 win at Swansea, plus a brief substitute appearance in the defeat at Brighton.

The defender joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid after spending two seasons there after moving over from Malaga.

Jesus Gamez spent his entire career at Malaga until that move to Atletico when he was 29.

Captaining the team, he led them in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Obviously he still has a special place in the hearts of Malaga fans as Spanish football publication Marca, have asked supporters to name their greatest ever 11 players.

Jesus Gamez was selected and also named captain.

Some of the other selections in the team were criticised, with them being mainly players who had played in recent times, and some of them not making a lot of appearances, such as Ruud van Nistelrooy who started only 10 La Liga games for Malaga and was sub in another 18.

Marca write-up:

“On the right, Captain Jesus Gamez – nine seasons in the first team before signing for Atlético (Madrid).”
