Newcastle looking to sign Jasper Cillessen in January – Report

Rafa Benitez is set to try and sign Jasper Cillessen in January, according to reports from Spain.

The Newcastle boss made clear in the summer that he wanted to bring in a new number one but with Mike Ashley’s budget constraints, it didn’t happen.

Rafa was also willing to let Karl Darlow leave but he ended up staying as number two, with Tim Krul heading off to Brighton (on a loan that then became permanent), whilst Matz Sels is with Anderlecht on loan.

Rob Elliot has done ok but no surprise if Rafa is keen to revisit this and try to bring in a quality keeper sooner rather than later.

Jasper Cillessen is currently number two at Barcelona but Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital claim that Barca are already looking at replacing him and the Dutch number one is keen to once again get first team football, having made only one La Liga start since moving from Ajax in summer 2016.

They report that Rafa has also been keeping an eye on Real Sociedad keeper Geronimo Rulli as he keeps his options open, the 25 year old is reserve keeper for Argentina.

Elsewhere the north east media have claimed that Rafa Benitez will have money to spend in January, regardless of whether a takeover happens, although if Ashley is still there then no doubt Rafa will need to prioritise his spending on which positions most need strengthening.
