Newcastle are watching Rashid Sumaila ahead of the January transfer market according to reports late on Monday.

The Ghanian international defender currently plays for Al Qadsia.

The player having moved to Kuwait back in 2014 from South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Now aged 24, in the summer it was reported that Rashid Sumaila almost joined Celtic but no move happened.

A number of Championship clubs have been linked with the centre-back but now Football Ghana report that Newcastle are the first Premier League club to register an interest.

Celtic are also claimed to be still interested in the defender.

Rashid Sumaila was part of the Ghana squad in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

At 6ft 4 he is a commanding presence but centre-back doesn’t appear a priority in the short-term for Newcastle United, with Rafa Benitez surely hoping to target other key areas in January ahead of the middle of defence.

At least these transfer rumour stories break up the worries of no Newcastle United takeover actually happening.
